Det startede i 1980 med en plade linoleum og en grankogle. Jeg tegnede koglen på pladen og skar mit
første linoleumssnit. Så skar jeg en serie med huse og landskaber fra Ærø. Trykt med sort, men flere
farver kom til, da min klarinet blev motivet. Jeg mødte en mand, som skar træsnit med grønlandske
landskaber. Den teknik ville jeg også prøve - med krydsfiner. Det materiale savede jeg Anders Andfigurer ud af, da jeg var dreng. Nu blev det til landskaber, træer, huse, figurer. Jeg eksperimenterede,
søgte, kiggede på andres træsnit. Først da jeg begyndte at tegne med tusch – pensel, pind eller pen
– og overførte disse tegninger til træplader, så jeg en vej. Jeg farvelagde tuschtegningerne med billige
dækfarver. Så havde jeg skitserne til farvetræsnittene. Sort og rød kom først, men snart fulgte alle de
andre farver. Og så kom computeren. Nu kunne jeg scanne tuschtegningen og afprøve alle mulige
farver digitalt og finde det rigtige udtryk til træsnittet. Figurer myldrede frem på trykkene, og fra 2003
fik de ofte et landskab eller et bybillede omkring sig. Erindringer fra rejser var blevet motivet. På de
følgende sider viser jeg et træsnit/linoleumssnit for hvert år i perioden 1980 - 2016.
It began in 1980 with a plate of linoleum and a spruce cone. I drew the cone on the plate and cut
my first linocut. Then I cut a series with houses and landscapes from the Danish island Ærø. Printed
with black, but more colours were added when my clarinet became the motive. I met a man who
made woodcuts of landscapes from Greenland. I wanted to try this technique too – with plywood.
When I was a boy, it was the material that I used for my sawed out Donald Duck figures. Now I made
pictures of landscapes, trees, houses, figures. I experimented, searched, and studied other artists’
woodcuts. Only when I started drawing with Indian ink – brush, stick, or pen – and transferred these
drawings to plywood, I found my way. I coloured the drawings with cheap watercolours. Now I had
the designs for the woodcuts. Black and red ink at first, but soon all the other colours followed. Then
the computer came. Now I was able to scan the Indian ink drawings and digitally test all possible
colours to find the right expression for the woodcut. Figures were swarming into the prints, and
from 2003, they were often in a landscape or a cityscape. Memories of travels became the motive.
On the following pages, I show one woodcut/linocut for each of the years from 1980 to 2016.
