”An image is a sight that has been recreated. At first images were made to conjure up something that was absent. Gradually it became evident that an image could outlast what it represented.” (Prestudies for a Film, Eva La Cour). I 1990 valgte Det Kgl. Onsdag d. 12. april kl. 18 Feminisktisk Kollektiv Uden Navn: Performance pissed and out of control Onsdag d. 12. april offentliggør Feministisk Kollektiv Uden Navn et selvorganiseret performance-program på Den Frie, som vil tage afsæt i den aktuelle video-performance pissed and out of control, som kan ses i udstillingens videoprogram. Monday CLOSED, Tuesday-Friday 12–6pm, Thursday 12–9pm, Saturday-Sunday 12–6pm Oslo Pl. 1, 2100 Copenhagen Ø, +45 33122803, denfrie.dk. DFU Kino: Live Program Host statements Thursday March 16th 7pm Pia Rönicke and Tinne Zenner: Territorial Documents/Monuments Pia Rönicke and Tinne Zenner have compiled a programme of historical and contemporary films and video works that explore geographical areas, investigating the representation of the image and the landscape. ”An image is a sight that has been recreated. At first images were made to conjure up something that was absent. Gradually it became evident that an image could outlast what it represented.” (Pre-studies for a Film, Eva La Cour). The emergence or disappearance of the landscape takes place not only in the individual films, but also in the displacement of the time during which they are filmed. Using formal, conceptual and performative approaches, the portrayed landscape is analysed and distorted. Myths and science are juxtaposed to capture what is not apparent to the naked eye. Thursday March 23rd 7pm Simon Starling and John Skoog: An Evening of Moving Images This film night brings two artists from different generations together in their shared interest in the mechanisms and processes behind the creation of the moving image. A kaleidoscopic collage of film including Starling and Skoog, fragments of Hollywood blockbusters, clips from art-house darlings, as well as other reflections on the nature of film. Thursday March 30th 7pm Lars Movin and Jørgen Michaelsen: Danish Video Art in the 1990s In the early 1990s ‘video art’ arrived in Denmark. The phenomenon was apparently widely seen as an autonomous new medium – maybe even a genre – on equal terms with art forms like painting, sculpture and ceramics. On the other hand, video art was seen as being connected to film and instal- lation (another focus at the time), and there was also a tendency for video art to be seen as a kind of conceptual art. In the 1990s the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts set up a school of media art on a trial basis, another site where video art was discussed and problematized. At the same time a number of artist-run exhibition spaces with a strong focus on the medium in exhibitions, documentation and archiving opened in Copenhagen. Among these art spaces was Max Mundus, which was run by the artists Tine Borg, Anja Franke, Marianne Grønnow, I.N. Kjær and Jørgen Michaelsen. The Thursday event focuses on this phase in Danish contemporary art. The author Lars Movin and artist Jørgen Michaelsen will show samples from Max Mundus’ VHS archive and discuss ‘video art’, its prerequisites, and its potential ramifications. Thursday April 6th 7 pm Peter van der Meijden: Dada and Film, Fluxus and Video Dada and film: do they meet in the materiality of film or the filmic integration of people and the present? And then, 40 years later, Fluxus and video: do they meet in the materiality of electronic imagery or the possibility of direct record and play? And how is the connection expressed: in the medium itself, through manifestos or in an artist-run or institutional context? A talk on materiality, the avant-garde and institutions. Wednesday April 12th 6pm Feminisktisk Kollektiv Uden Navn: Performance pissed and out of control On Wednesday April 12th Feministisk Kollektiv Uden Navn launch a self-organised performance programme at Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art based on the video performance pissed and out of control, which is part of the exhibition’s video programme. Den Frie Udstilling 2017 Throughout its long history, the artists’ association Den Frie Udstilling annual exhibition has taken many forms and experimented with an equal number of concepts. In 2017 video art is in focus, and a cinema has been installed in the central gallery of the Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art. New media works often face challenges when exhibited among more traditional art forms. This is something this year’s exhibition aims to redress by placing a cinema at the very heart of an exhibition otherwise steeped in history. The daily film programme consists of video works by members of the Den Frie Udstilling, as well as nine Danish and international contemporary artists who have been invited to join this year’s show. As part of the exhibition programme, every Thursday, artists and theorists in the field of video art will present their take on the medium with screenings, talks and performances. The artist committee behind this year’s exhibition concept is Camilla Berner, Jørgen Michaelsen and Ebbe Stub Wittrup. In 2016 Den Frie Udstilling lost two key members, Emil Westman Hertz and Nils Erik Gjerdevik. Their loss is marked by the inclusion of works in the exhibition by both artists, who played a major role not only on the artists’ association, but also on the Danish art scene. It is with a heavy heart that Den Frie Udstilling bids them farewell.
