May/June 2014 Crystal Lake Public Library Welcomes Jennifer Drinka New Head of Youth Services Visit the Storytime Room at the Antioch Public Library and you will immediately notice a lifesize picture of a mermaid painted by Jennifer Drinka. Jennifer drew the mermaid more than 15 years ago when she was a page at her hometown library. Jennifer Drinka, CLPL’s new Head of Youth Services, stays strongly connected to a “child’s point of view.” Jennifer is pictured above with her Beatrix Potter Barbie and a Peter Rabbit book. Inside: Director’s Desktop. . . . . . . 2 Friends . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2 Teens. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 3 Donors . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 4 Adult Services. . . . . . . 4 & 5 Kids’ Pages. . . . . . . . . 6 & 7 Jennifer’s connection to libraries runs deep. The youngest of nine children, when she was growing up, Jennifer’s family used the library to stretch the family budget. “My mother always read to us,” says Jennifer, who remembers going to the library as a girl, borrowing numerous books, then laying them out on the kitchen table to decide which order she would read them in. “I had the distinction of consistently coming in second place for the number of books read during the Summer Reading Program,” she laughs. Since working in the Antioch Public Library during high school, Jennifer has worked in five libraries prior to coming to CLPL as the new Head of Youth Services. After receiving her bachelor’s degree in Fiction Writing at Columbia College Chicago Jennifer earned her Masters in Library and Information Science at Dominican University in Illinois. Her first professional position after graduation was a Youth Librarian at Fox River Grove Memorial Library where Jennifer knew that she had found her niche in life. “I love ‘youth stuff,’” says Jennifer. “I love storytelling, crafts, and stimulating young imaginations.” Jennifer’s love for children and respect for their developmental stages is apparent. She has a box of toys, in her office that she unpacks daily, including her Beatrix Potter Barbie and Le Petit Prince doll. She also has a six foot tall board game collection in her home. “I think it’s important to stay in touch with the things of my youth. It gives me the ability to see things from the kids’ point of view.” Jennifer is energized by what she refers to as the “power of the public library.” Several years ago Jennifer worked with some middle schoolers on a public library outreach, where she encountered several students with remarkable promise. She later met the students’ teacher who was shocked at the high caliber of work the students were doing with Jennifer. The teacher reported that she and her colleagues had never seen such academic talent in these students. Jennifer was grateful not only for the strides the students had made, but also for the insight. “Each student who walks into the library is fresh to us,” says Jennifer. “We are not aware of their past academic struggles and can meet them where they are.” In addition to her position at Fox River Grove, Jennifer worked at Ela Area Public Library in Lake Zurich as Assistant Head of Popular Materials/Teen Librarian, at the Barrington Public Library as the Youth Program Coordinator, and at WarrenNewport Public Library as the Head of Youth Services. Jennifer lives in Cary with her husband, Joe, who is also a librarian. She says she is excited to be in Crystal Lake because, “I’ve never seen a Library so involved with the community.” She also reports that prior to coming to Crystal Lake, she had heard from multiple sources about the wonderful reputation of the Youth Services staff. “There’s a PhD, and multiple staff with master’s degrees in the department. They are talented, educated and so delightful!” Director’s Desktop Your Community Place for Lifelong Learning The Crystal Lake Public Library is “Your Community Place for Lifelong Learning” and our Mission is helping people, of all ages and background, learn, enjoy, and better their lives. What does this mean to you? Let’s think of an example, a classic title Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen. CLPL could provide it to you in as many as nine different formats: book; large print book for adults; large print book for youth; book on CD; Playaway (preloaded MP3 player); DVD movie of the book; graphic novel format (comic book style with pictures and dialog); e-Book; or e-Audio Book. In addition, if you are studying Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen, the Library offers Pride and Prejudice Cliff notes, twentieth century interpretations of Pride and Prejudice, or Jane Austen for Dummies. If you are looking for something entirely different, there are a variety of take offs of Pride and Prejudice such as The Second Mrs. Darcy; Pride & Prescience, M/M Darcy Mystery; Jane Austen in Boca; Bride and Prejudice; Mr. Darcy, Vampire; or Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. The public library provides service to all people, regardless of age, race, or economic status. We strive to provide whatever a person may need, in whatever format works best for each individual. I invite each of you to stop by and see what your Library of today has to offer you. Kathryn I. Penny Ramirez Head of Technical Services While working toward her undergraduate degree at the University of Chicago after her high school graduation in 1981, Penny Ramirez dreamed of going on for a Masters in Library Science (MLS). At that time, the graduate students in the library program talked her out of it, citing that the degree was expensive, salaries in the profession were low, and graduates had a hard time finding full-time positions. After completing college and working for 16 years as an Administrative Assistant, Penny finally decided to follow her dream and entered the MLS program at Dominican University in 2000. Today she is the Head of the Crystal Lake Public Library’s Technical and Automation Services Department. Penny’s affinity for libraries dates back to her youth. She recalls being so comfortable with the librarians in her public library that when asked to do a career interview in high school, she selected a librarian to speak with. She also gained firsthand knowledge of library technical services while working in the Cataloging Department of the Regenstein Library as an undergraduate student. As she grew into adulthood, Penny discovered that she had two additional vocational interests: computers and business organization. “I developed my love of computers in 1982 while in college,” Penny says. “Back then, there was only one computer in the dorm and we would stay up until 2:00 am to play Adventure, a text-based MS-DOS game.” Having worked for nearly 20 years as an Administrative Assistant, Penny also has a penchant for business organization. “When I was younger and working as an Administrative Assistant, I found that I liked the challenge of ‘fixing’ everything in an office. I still love that feeling.” After graduating from Dominican, Penny took a position at River Forest Public Library as a Reference Librarian. She then worked at the Melrose Park Public Library. She was hired by the Crystal Lake Public Library in 2004 as a full time Reference Librarian in the nonfiction area, then became Assistant Head of Adult Services in 2008. While in Adult Services Penny was always at the forefront of technology, leading the way in helping patrons learn how to download eBooks and eAudiobooks on a variety of devices. She also served on the Library’s Website Committee and was the envy of her team as she took Committee notes on her little red netbook. Penny was hired as the Head of Technical Services position in 2013 when her predecessor Mary Van Sickle retired. The consummate “fixer,” Penny has been enjoying the challenge of trying to provide better access in a facility that was built “before WiFi was even dreamed of.” She is also committed to getting patrons what they want, when they want it and staying at the forefront of emerging technologies. Penny’s new position combines her love of libraries, a love of technology, and eagerness to “fix stuff,” and today she’s glad she followed her dream to become a Librarian.
