September is ﬁnally here and with it the Doña Ana Arts Council kicks
off an all new season. In fact, the long anticipated 2012/2013 Performance Series rolls out on the 8th, with the Lonely Street Production of
Man In Black: The Music Of Johnny Cash. You won’t want to miss this
show. We also still have a few season passes left at the astoundingly low
price of $99 for six big shows (that’s a 40% discount!). The best way to

We only had 100 of those to sell and we’ve already shot right past the

This month also marks the beginning of the ﬁrst “ofﬁcial” season for
Driftwood Productions, with their Centennial production of Bells Of
Old Mesilla, right here at the Rio Grande Theatre. Information on that
is inside, too, along with more happenings taking place across the City.

busy working on some great shows for the coming months, including a
global ﬁlm festival in early October and an all-new, revamped and more
interactive 3rd Annual Zombie Walk toward the end of that month.

August 3, 2012 – The Doña Ana Arts Council is proud to
unveil its 2012/2013 Performance Series at the Rio Grande
Theatre. Back by popular demand, the Arts Council’s Performance Series offers patrons a chance to see six popular
acts for one low subscription price. Included in the package will be two tributes to legendary performers: Johnny
Cash in the Man In Black and Barbra Streisand in Simply
Streisand. Also included are performances by Grammynominated Gypsy Jazz band, The Hot Club of San Francisco; Local dance legends Paco y Luci in Olé España!; the

A staple of the downtown ArtRamble since February of
2006, the Howling Coyote started out as a jam session for
local musicians and quickly grew into a showcase featuring
some of ﬁnest talent Las Cruces has to offer. The monthly
event now makes the Rio Grande Theatre its home and
continues to feature primarily acoustic musicians, singers

Grande Theatre Presents a Centennial
Production of Ruth Thurman Myra’s
Bells of Old Mesilla
Driftwood Productions kicks off its 2012/2013 season at
the Rio Grande Theatre with the historical operetta Bells
Of Old Mesilla, written by New Mexico resident Ruth
Thurman Myra and directed by Oscar Perez. Bells Of Old
Mesilla has a storied past in the annals of Southern New
Mexico history. Written as a master’s thesis by the author, a
professor at Western New Mexico University in Silver City,
and presented as part of the ofﬁcial Centennial celebration
surrounding Mesilla in 1954, the original production featured such well-known personalities as former State Representative J. Paul Taylor and LCCT founder Michael Colquatt (who later found fame under his pseudonym Michael
Graves on the daytime soap opera All My Children) in the
cast, as well as a lush orchestration by the late Oscar Butler.
It has not been presented again for over 50 years, despite
many attempts to do so by local theatre companies.
Synopsis: The play is set against the backdrop of Old Mesilla during the time of the Gadsden Purchase in 1854,
when some Mesilleros were happy to become Americans
and others wanted to remain Mexican citizens. The play
focuses on two young women, Sarah Conrad (played by
Christa Allen) and Teresa Valdez (Jade Diaz); their fathers
— Colonel Conrad (John Smith) and Ramon Valdez (Tom
Saint John), and the girls’ true loves — two young, ﬁnancially-challenged young men, David Marsh (Kevin Albers)
and Richardo Reyes (Philip Alvarez and understudy, Christopher Sedillo). The women’s fathers have arranged for
their daughters to marry ofﬁcers in their respective armies.
The girls are heartbroken over these arranged marriages to
much older men, and remain true to the young men who
love them. The boys decide that if they could improve their
ﬁnancial standings, the fathers would be more welcoming
of them as suitors, so they set out to search for their fortunes.
Along with a large cast of children and adults portraying
Mesilleros and a set reminiscent of the rustic structures of
Old Mesilla, the Las Cruces community will undoubtedly
discover a treasure in this unusual theatrical offering.
Director Oscar Perez, whose recent directorial effort Nunset Boulevard met with great success and glowing reviews,
believes that this is the perfect time for Bells Of Old Mesilla to be produced. “Bells Of Old Mesilla is a showcase
of history, culture, community and artistic expression,” he
says. “As a ﬂedgling theatre group, Driftwood Productions
has chosen this production to bring together these elements
by including many community groups while celebrating a
very pivotal historical event: the signing of the Gadsden
Treaty. As the state of New Mexico celebrates its Centennial I felt that it was the perfect time to reﬂect on the rich
and cultural history of Mesilla, which in the late 1800’s and
early 1900’s was a bustling town in New Mexico. It played
a critical part in establishing the legitimacy of the southern
part of the state.”
Performances will run September 14 - 30; 8pm on Fridays
& Saturdays, 2pm on Sundays. Tickets are $12 general

Theatre Gallery this
September
The global photographic works of Peter
Goodman will be on display in the El Paso
Electric Gallery, South of the Rio Grande
Theatre lobby, for the month of September, 2012. A native of New York, Goodman
started taking pictures while working as a
cab driver and capturing the juxtapositions
of people and urban environments. Upon
moving to New Mexico, he shifted from
black and white to color, shooting in wilderness areas where nature was on display.
Most recently, in his travels throughout Asia, he has rediscovered his interest in photographing people and ﬁnds
himself incorporating both urban and nature themes into
his evolving work. The exhibit will run through the month
of September 2012, beginning with an artist reception on
September 7, from 5 to 7pm, as part of the Downtown Art
Ramble.
Peter Goodman is a writer-photographer-videographer who
recently returned to Doña Ana County with his wife Dael
after a long absence. He has been a reporter and ﬁlm-maker
in Las Cruces, a cab-driver in New York City, a trial lawyer
in San Francisco, and a news broadcaster on an Englishlanguage radio station in Tai Bei. His photos have been
shown in various venues in the San Francisco Bay Area.
His “Perú is Beautiful” show was displayed for two months
in La Peña Gallery in Berkeley and is scheduled for the
Branigan Cultural Center in July 2013. He currently maintains a blog, “Views from Soledad Canyon,” and writes a
fortnightly column for the Las Cruces Sun-News.
Also included the evening of the artist reception will be
the Howling Coyote Coffeehouse/Open Mic, beginning
at 7pm. On permanent display in the Clute/Muggenburg
Gallery are memorabilia and photos from the Rio Grande
Theatre’s long and illustrious reign in downtown Las Cruces. The Rio Grande Theatre galleries, located in the lobby
of the historic Rio Grande Theatre at 211 N. Main in Las
Cruces, are open Monday through Friday from 9am to

Loosely translated from Latin, Artamants means “lovers of art.” A collaborative of local artists, Artamants have been gathering weekly for over a

Dwyer, Tom Gerend, Jennifer Goude, Mayanna Howard, Betty Hummer,

Southwestern Chapter of the ACLU of New Mexico Sponsors
Songwriter Competition
There is one month left, in order to submit your entry to the Southwestern Chapter of the ACLU of New Mexico’s singer/songwriter competition. The ﬁnals will be held in connection with its Annual Meeting on October 26, 2012. Due to continuing
attempts to suppress the legitimate right of American Citizens to vote; we are looking for songs that deal with voting rights issues. The focus can be on the historic efforts to obtain voting rights by women or minority populations; or the loss of the ability
to vote due to oppressive legislation. All entries must arrive no later than Sept. 14, 2012. Finalists will be notiﬁed no later than

The Enchanted Land at the Branigan
The Branigan Cultural Center presents The Enchanted Land, an exhibition of photographs by members of The Doña Ana Camera Club. . It
consists of works that celebrate and support our state’s centennial. This
juried show displays selected entries. Awards are to be presented by The
Doña Ana Camera Club during the exhibit. The presentation begins on
Friday, September 7 and concludes on Saturday, September 29. A reception is to be held on Friday, September 7 during the monthly ArtRamble.

Lois V. Smith
During the month of September the Mesquite Art Gallery features the work of
Lois V. Smith, whose work is mostly watercolor and monotypes with some early
Asian-inﬂuences thrown-in as a bonus. Featured in the exhibit will be watercolors
on Yupo paper, hand-pulled gelatin monotypes and Oriental brush ink renderings.
The exhibit runs throughout the month of September, with an artist reception on

A New MicroLoan and Mini Grant
Competition for Las Cruces Area Artists
SumArt & the West End Art Depot will be hosting a new micro loan & mini grant
competition for Las Cruces area artists during the Depot Districts Arts Fest on Sept.
14, 2012, from 6pm to 7:30pm. The inaugural event will spotlight innovative concepts for works of art that will be accessible to the community upon completion. Artists in all mediums will be invited to pitch
their concept to a group of audience “investors” each of whom will have contributed at least $5 to a prize money pool. Investors
will select the project to fund based on the concept, feasibility, time frame, and whether or not the money will be paid back to
fund future projects. Presenters are encouraged to make their pitches as dynamic as possible. Initial prize money is estimated to
be in the range of $400-$500. Sponsorships for the competition are also available. The event is open to the public with a $5 suggested minimum donation for participation as an audience member/investor. West End Art Depot is an artists’ studio and gallery

LCCT presents When You Comin’ Back, Red Ryder?
The boring routine of the daily grind at a small roadside diner
in New Mexico is disrupted with the arrival of two couples,
the upscale Richard and Clarisse and the down-on-their-luck
Teddy and Cheryl. Complications arise when Teddy takes everyone in the diner hostage, resorting to physical, mental, and
emotional torture. When You Comin’ Back, Red Ryder? will
run Sept. 7 – 23, 2012 at The Las Cruces Community Theatre,
313 N. Main, just north of Las Cruces Ave. Performances are
Fridays & Saturdays at 8pm & Sundays at 2pm. Tickets are

No Strings Theatre Company
announces auditions for Still Life With Iris
No Strings Theatre Company announces Auditions for “Still
Life With Iris,” by Steven Dietz, and directed by Nikka Ziemer.
The play is set in Nocturno and chronicles a young girl’s quest
to regain her memory and with it, her home. With the help of
incredible people she meets along the way, Iris’s crusade recovers more than her past. She succeeds in ﬁnding herself, the
power of faith and the courage of persistence. Auditions will
be held on Sunday, September16, and Monday, September17,
at 7pm at the Black Box Theatre, 430 N Downtown Mall in
Las Cruces. There are roles for between 9 and 11 actors, including four to ﬁve females ages 10 – 60 and ﬁve to six males,
also ages 10 - 60. Auditions will consist of cold readings from

ASTC presents Sweet, Sweet Spirit
Faith, culture and family clash as a conservative evangelical
family grapples with the aftermath of a father beating his gay
son to near death, leaving the family with the overwhelming
task of ﬁguring out who should raise the son in his ﬁnal teen
years. Show dates are September 28 – October 14, 2012. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30pm and Sundays
at 2pm. Tickets are $15 adults, $13 seniors and $10 students.

Southwest Fright Fest seeking entries
The ‘Land of Enchantment: this is NO fairy tale’ presents the Southwest Fright Fest Film
Festival as a New Mexico competition corresponding to the Land of Enchantment Festival. The festival, as a whole, is a production from the non-proﬁt Dona Ana Theater
Association and is devoted to furthering appreciation for theatrics and seeks to provide
opportunities for students and volunteers to further themselves through such forums to
obtain experience in theatrics. The Film Festival shares these objectives. The festival is
strictly reserved for themes that are appropriate for the event and season, that being Halloween/Horror. Genre categories include: Zombie, Slasher, Creature/Monster, and Miscellaneous
(eg. Perhaps an Experimental ﬁlm with appropriate aesthetics stylistics, or theme). Submissions for
the Southwest Fright Fest run through Oct. 1st. A screening panel will select the top four from each category
to be presented at the festival. The festival will take place October 28th. Admission to the Southwest Fright Festival is free and

site of a new, longterm exhibit showcasing the art of saddle
making. The exhibit
features the recreated
workshop of the late,
legendary saddle maker Slim Green, as well
as a video of Green explaining saddle making, an interactive area
for leather stamping,
and panels that show
the history and evolution of Western stock saddles. The Farm & Ranch Heritage

Celebrate! New Mexico’s
Statehood Revelry in 1912
State Historian, Dr. Rick Hendricks, will talk about the
many ways New Mexico celebrated its statehood in 1912.
Hendricks, who received his Ph.D in Ibero American
Studies at the University of New Mexico, has written or
collaborated on more than 16 books and 70 articles on the
Spanish colonial period in the American Southwest and
Mexico. His writings have garnered awards from the Historical Society of New Mexico, the New Mexico Historical
Review, the El Paso County Historical Society, the Border
Regional Library Association, and the Doña Ana County
Historical Society. The lecture will take place on September 13, 2012 at 7pm. Admission is a suggested donation
of $2. The Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum is located at

Las Cruces City Council will present Flo Hosa Dougherty an award at their
next meeting, Tuesday, September 4, 2012, promptly at 1pm at City Hall

The Las Cruces Museum of Art in Las Cruces, NM seeks proposals for solo
and group exhibitions to be presented at the Museum of Art in 2013. Artists living and working in New Mexico, Arizona, and Texas are eligible to
submit. Exhibition jurors are Dr. Stephanie Taylor, Director, University Art
Gallery, New Mexico State University and Diane McGregor, MFA, Studio

Seeking Visual Artists
Co-op Rocks!, a free & all ages monthly arts celebration at Mikey’s Place
in Las Cruces, is seeking visual artists to display work in any medium for
our one-day events. Co-op Rocks! takes place every third Saturday of the

Located at the western limit of the Las Cruces downtown arts district, the
West End Art Depot will provide a space for artists in many media to work
and teach in a communal setting and beneﬁt from shared resources. The
warehouse at 401 Mesilla St will house the West End Art Depot, with a 3800
sq. ft. main ﬂoor and a 1500 sq. ft. gallery. The main ﬂoor will be divided
into 6 to 10 private and semi-private studio spaces at rates starting at $100/

Applications Open for Railyard Arts Pilot Project
The Railyard Arts Committee is accepting applications for temporary public
artworks to be installed in designated areas on the Railyard Park + Plaza in
Santa Fe, New Mexico. The Railyard is a “Cohesive Urban Art Environment,” designed and intended as a “work of art in itself.” Artists, organizations and collaborative, creative teams are encouraged to propose projects,
particularly those that respond to the landscape of the Railyard Park + Plaza
and that emphasize community engagement and participation. Collaborations across disciplines of artists, scientists, historians, sociologists, etc. are
especially encouraged, and various art forms from visual to performing arts
are welcome. Projects will be temporary in nature and must be able to be
installed and removed from the Railyard within a six month period. How
To Apply: New Mexico Artists are invited to complete an online application form on the Railyard Stewards’ website: http://www.railyardpark.org/
programs/railyard-art-project/. Artists should select an eligible area of the
Railyard open-space appropriate to their project and describe the project in
detail. Photos of the art may be uploaded to the application. Considerations
for approval of projects include: quality; availability of space/appropriate
timing; context and familiarity with the proposed site; practical viability;
potential for community engagement and cultural/educational enrichment.
Projects must be temporary in nature, and fully funded. Guidelines for the
Railyard Art Project Pilot Program, as well as detailed maps of the sites
available for art installation, can be viewed on the Railyard Stewards website as part of the application. The Railyard Arts Committee, made up of
community members involved in public art and holding Railyard expertise,
will select and schedule the temporary public art projects in the Railyard
Park + Plaza and will oversee the installation and implementation of all
projects. The Railyard Arts Committee is under the auspices of The Railyard Stewards, a local organization working in partnership with the City of
Santa Fe in a unique care, conservation and education effort to encourage
residents to actively participate in the Railyard Park + Plaza.

The Doña Ana Arts Council is a non-proﬁt organization
dedicated to improving the quality of life in Las Cruces
and Southern New Mexico by ensuring that the performing, visual, and literary arts are an integral part of education, economic growth, and community development.
Among the many programs offered by the Arts Council are
the Missoula Children’s Theatre, a week-long theatre experience open to all children ages 5-18 in the community;
Youth At Risk / Artists in Residency at La Casa Shelter
for Domestic Violence, in which local artists conduct free
weekly art workshops for children living at the shelter; Career Art Path (CAP), in which 40 middle school children
spend two weeks getting ﬁrst-hand knowledge of the arts;
Kennedy Center Partners in Education, working with the
Las Cruces Public Schools to provide professional development for teachers and increased student access to the
arts; and many more programs throughout each year.
In addition, the Arts Council sponsors such regularly-attended events as the Las Cruces Art Fair, the Renaissance
ArtsFaire, and a variety of special events taking place in
the Rio Grande Theatre, including Every Other Tuesday,
The Howling Coyote Open Mic and Film Las Cruces. None
