ACH and UAMS Open Centers for Children in Jonesboro
On Sept. 27, Arkansas Children’s Hospital and UAMS Department of Pediatrics opened the Centers for Children in Jonesboro with a news conference and ribbon-cutting featuring physicians, community leaders and patients. This new facility will
give families more opportunities to seek subspecialty care for
their kids right in northeast Arkansas, eliminating long trips to
Little Rock or Memphis.
Familiar faces are also a part of the Centers for Children
experience. Northeast Arkansas families have turned to Stephen
Bates, MD, for their children’s neurology care for several years.
He is now seeing patients as part of the UAMS/ACH Centers for
Children in Jonesboro. Patients of the neurology clinic at the
UAMS/ACH Centers for Children in Jonesboro will also be able
to undergo EEGs on-site that will be read by Dr. Stephen Bates.
The Centers also offers a monthly cardiology clinic, where
children with congenital heart defects will be evaluated and
treated. This clinic moved from its existing location at The Children’s Clinic in Jonesboro.
The institutions expect there will be between 1,500 and
2,000 visits to the neurology and cardiology clinics in the first
year at the Jonesboro facility. UAMS and ACH plan to offer additional clinics at the Jonesboro campus in the coming months
as well, all based on volume and feedback from the referring
physicians in the region.
The Centers’ opening marks an expansion of regional services offered by a unique UAMS and ACH collaborative. The
first Centers for Children location in Lowell opened in 2007 and
quickly grew to include multiple subspecialty services and a primary care clinic. UAMS and ACH are also partners in two dozen
individual subspecialty clinics throughout Arkansas.
“We want families to have excellent care available to their
children as close to their front doors as possible,” said ACH President and CEO Jonathan Bates, MD. “Through the Centers for
Children, ACH and UAMS are delivering these specialized services in more familiar environments, which means better outcomes
and happier, healthier children.”
The collaboration between UAMS and ACH results in a
strengthened coordinated system of care for children across the
state. Congratulations to UAMS and ACH on this remarkable
accomplishment for the families of northeast Arkansas!
As a “thank you” from ACH,

Department Spotlight:
Clinical Informatics
In August 2010, ACH began turning the vision of a Clinical Informatics department into a reality.
Jaye Henderson was hired as the Clinical Informatics director and the team continued to grow from
there. Currently the team has seven dedicated registered nurses, Peter Bruner, Brady Dixon, Barrett
Flagg, Darrel Kline, Kim Knod-Larcholey, Laura Meti and Aimee Motisi, who all came from clinical
areas within ACH and continue to practice at the bedside as part of their scheduled responsibility.
Simply stated, nursing informatics is a sub-discipline of health informatics that focuses on the
integration and use of information technology in the practice and delivery of nursing care. ACH’s
Clinical Informatics team assists in a wide range of clinical IT areas such as “at the elbow support”,
project planning, system development, standardization, education, quality reviews, training, research, reporting and overall communication related to safety, best practices and alerts. The team is
committed to quality care, patient safety and partnerships with various entities including technological and nursing leadership. The team continues to strive to improve system efficiency and effectiveness by reducing redundancy of functionality and looking for opportunities to improve clinical care
as a whole through these systems.
The team may be small in size, but continues to move mountains to ensure their fellow nurses
are educated and trained in advanced clinicals. In the month of September, the team trained 200
nurses in Med/Surg in just two weeks! The Clinical Informatics team has trained 76 percent of the
nursing staff for advanced clinicals with the remaining 24 percent scheduled for training in the upcoming months.
Clinical Informatics is consistently seeking new challenges and identifying resources and learning activities to enhance competence throughout the hospital. If you would like to contact the Clinical Informatics department, they are located on the fourth floor of the main hospital (across from the
STAT Team office) and can be reached at X43377 or by pager at 405-0740.

Dr. James Koonce Invested in Pediatric
Dental Endowed Chair
In September, James Koonce, DDS,
was named the inaugural chairholder of the
Arkansas Children’s Hospital Auxiliary,
Frueauff and Windgate Endowed Chair in
Pediatric Dentistry. Dr. Koonce, the director
of dental services at ACH, was invested in
the endowed chair in a ceremony at ACH.
During the event, Dr. Koonce’s accomplishments and patient-centered care were
lauded by friends and colleagues.
The endowed chair, which was funded
through gifts from the ACH Auxiliary, the
Charles A. Frueauff Foundation and the
Windgate Charitable Foundation, will support the hospital’s dental health efforts at
the clinic and around the state.
During the ceremony, Dr. Koonce spoke
of the importance of this endowed chair.
“With this endowed chair, we want to do
the most for the children who have the
least,” he said. “We will make sure children
have access to care they need, through the
Dental Clinic at the hospital and through the
mobile dental program across the state. We
will lead research on the best ways to deliver
care to communities we want to reach, and
we will focus on educating the caregivers
who are treating our patients.”

Betty Clemons • Physician Access Line
1. What is it about ACH that has motivated you to
work here for so long? My coworkers; I have worked in
two departments in my 25 years, NICU and now Physician
Services. My coworkers have been like family to me from my
being sick to losing my mom and dad. They were there all the
way, and I could not ask for a better place to work.
2. What are your special interests outside of work? My church activities, my
children and my grandchildren.
3. If Hollywood made a movie about your life, whom would you like to see
play you in the lead role? I would like for Patty Labelle to play me.
4. What is one fun fact about you that few people know? I am a prankster and
love to play tricks on people (especially my grandkids).
5. If you could trade places with any other person for a week – famous or not,
living or dead – with whom would it be? If I could trade places with someone it
would be Michelle Obama; can you imagine being married to the president of the USA?
6. If you were a raindrop, where is the one place that you’d want to land?
Heaven or on the moon.
7. What is the best advice you ever received? The advice my Mom always told me
that I try to live by: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
