Ceremony honors sacrifice of POWs, missing in action
by Tech. Sgt. Ray Bowden
21st Space Wing Public Affairs
A flight of Airmen, Soldiers and civilians jog the last leg of the 24-hour POW/MIA run Sept. 18 before posting
the POW/MIA flag in front of the base chapel. The end of the run signified the beginning of Peterson’s POW/
MIA Recognition Day ceremony and marked the conclusion of National POW/MIA week. The 21st Space Wing
hosted several events during this week including a Reveille ceremony, the run and a candlelight vigil. Col. (ret)
Gordon Scott, a former POW, was the guest speaker Friday at the chapel. (Air Force photo by Larry Hulst)
The men and women of the 21st Space
Wing concluded their week long tribute
to servicemembers who have been declared prisoners of war or missing in action with a POW/MIA Recognition Day
Ceremony Sept. 18 at the base chapel.
Peterson’s observance marked the last
of six days during the National POW/MIA
week, a period during which Congress has
mandated the flying of the National League
of Families’ POW/MIA flag.
The ceremony began with the posting
of this flag and featured Col. (ret) Gordon
Scott, an Army Air Corps aviator who spent
50 days as a POW in Japan, and closed with
remarks from Col. Stephen Whiting, 21st
SW commander.
“It is especially fitting that on the Air
Force’s 62nd birthday, we remember and
honor the sacrifice of prisoners of war and
those missing in action,” Colonel Whiting
said. “Our service’s historic commitment
to space capabilities like global positioning
will decrease the probability of our Airmen
being taken prisoner,” he said.
Colonel Scott spent his internment in
a small bamboo cage with his seven-man
crew. He and his men were routinely beaten
but stayed true to the Code of Conduct.
“We were interrogated two-to-three
times a week,” he said. “We got beat on
the back of the head if we didn’t answer
properly, but we just gave them our name,
rank and the type of aircraft we f lew,” he
said.
A variety of Peterson Airmen turned out
to support the POW/MIA event.
“My grandfather was a POW, my father was a Marine in Vietnam, and I have
two brothers in the Army,” said Airman
1st Class Delilah Alvarado, 21st Dental
Squadron. “I’m here to honor the past and
the sacrifice of our POWs. There’s never
going to be enough ways to say ‘thank
you.’”
Colonel Whiting presented Colonel Scott
with a painting of a P-51, the same aircraft
Colonel Scott flew while stationed on the
Island of Okinawa.
“Their efforts transformed Japan,” he said,
praising the service of Colonel Scott and
other World War II-era Airmen serving in
Japan. “Japan is now among our strongest
of allies and one of the world’s leading democracies,” he said.
The event also featured an invocation from
Chaplain (Capt.) Ron Feeser, and a reading of
the “Loneliest Prayer” and ‘America’s “Answer
to the loneliest Prayer,” and a demonstration to honor former POWs and MIAs by a
fire team of American and Royal Canadian
Airmen and U.S. Army personnel.
“Our POWs and MIAs gave so much to
their country and stayed true to what it
means to be an American,” said Chaplain
(Maj.) Mark Ingles, 21st SW Chapel. “It
encourages me to know that we are paying
tribute to their service.”
Colonel Scott continues to serve the Air
Force as a docent at the Peterson Air and
Space Museum here.
Wing library among seven in Air Force to reach pemier status

21st Space Wing Public Affairs staff writer
The Peterson library received the Department of Defense Morale Welfare
and Recreation Premier Status Award at an annual DoD library workshop in
Chicago, Ill., in July.
Peterson’s library is one of seven in the Air Force to win the award for exceeding core MWR standards to earn premier status. The premier standards involve
heightened levels in three of five core standard areas: customer programs and
services, technology infrastructure and facilities. The premier standard offerings at the library include multimedia stations, 18 computer stations with
commercial Internet access and Wi-Fi throughout the library, a PlayStation
3 in the young adult area, and a youth computer work station with children’s
educational software.
The other core standard areas are: separate areas for different types of materials and areas for study, library staff meets qualification standards and receives
required training, and library services provides a long range budget plan.
“It is nice to know that the library is getting some recognition,” said Kathy
Kucharski, 21st Force Support Squadron base librarian. “This is recognition that
other people are noticing besides our customers. Recognition that the hard work
we have been putting into improving the library has been acknowledged.”
Ms. Kucharski has served at Peterson as a librarian since 1999.
At the end of each fiscal year, Ms. Kucharski compiles the library annual report
that tabulates such operations as the number of books circulated. The data is
sent to the DoD and compared against several sets of standards shared amongst
all installations until the data reaches the five star level standard of Air Force
libraries. Each set of standards contains its own core and premier standards.
Library patrons use the computers at the Peterson library Sept. 16. The library received the Department of Defense Morale,
Welfare and Recreation Premier Status Award at an annual DoD library workshop in July. The library is one of seven throughout
the Air Force to win the award for exceeding core MWR standards. The library offers 18 computer stations with commercial

Fall means beginning of snow season
Commentary by Maj. Lori Kabel
21st Civil Engineer Squadron
During winter weather, one of the most
important missions at Peterson is notifying
employees about road conditions and whether
the base is open or closed.
“Our primary objective is to keep the base
populace informed in a timely manner to allow
them to make sound driving decisions,” Col.
Emily Buckman, 21st Mission Support Group
commander said.
Peterson employees can check several avenues for information: the Peterson Snow Call
Line at 556-SNOW, local television and radio
stations, and www.peterson.af.mil.
When snow and ice conditions develop at
Peterson, a team of experts from across the
wing recommend a course of action to protect
base personnel. When questionable weather
conditions develop, 21st Security Forces
Squadron and 21st CES Airmen will inspect
base road and parking conditions. If the road
conditions are hazardous, the 21st CES and
21st SFS commanders present a status brief to
the 21st MSG commander.
Timely communication is the key element
when determining road conditions and base
reporting procedures. The entire process
must be executed in less than an hour to ensure people are informed quickly; safety is the
primary consideration throughout the process. When conditions warrant, the 21st MSG
commander convenes a formal teleconference
with the 21st SFS and 21st CES commanders.
Once the commanders agree, the 21st MSG
commander recommends a course of action to
Col. Stephen Whiting, 21st SW commander or
Col. Jim Jennings, 21st SW vice commander.
Finally, Colonel Whiting will then instruct the
command post to implement snow call procedures while the 21st SW Public Affairs staff
will update local media outlets and the base’s
public Web site www.peterson.af.mil.
When snow operations begin, 41 engineers
from the 21st CES begin working to make
Stock photo
Peterson roadways as safe as possible with an
emphasis on keeping all roadways clear and
accessible for emergency vehicles. Of course,
with the airfield as our highest priority, you
may not see improvements immediately on
secondary roadways but rest assured they will
get to your area. In addition, there will be snow
removal operations in the housing area.
Terms you should know:
Closed
Peterson Air Force Base is closed. Military
personnel and Department of Defense civilians are not permitted to come or go. Anyone
coming on base while it is closed will not be
allowed to leave. Mission-essential personnel
will remain in place until the base is reopened
and their replacements arrive.
Early release
Non-mission-essential personnel and nonemergency personnel must depart their duty
stations before the end of the normal duty day.
Phased release of personnel normally occurs
at 30-minute intervals to reduce the congestion of traffic departing Peterson. According to
Colonel Buckman, “The reason for early release
is to provide ample time for picking up their
children, make it home safely and allow civil
engineers the opportunity to ready the base
for the next day.”
Mission essential only
Only mission-essential and emergency personnel should report for duty. Additionally,
mission-essential and emergency personnel
on Peterson at the time the base is closed must
remain on Peterson until the situation clears
or replacements arrive.
Sources of information available to you
www.peterson.af.mil
Peterson Snow Call Line 556-SNOW
All Peterson personnel may call the snow call
line for the latest information on base closures
or delays. Due to the potential for a large volume
of calls, the snow call line may be busy. Call
back periodically, or check local TV stations or
other sources listed to get the information.
How you can help
When the base is placed on a two-hour delay,
this means you should begin your commute
two hours later than you usually do. This delay
gives the snow and ice removal teams time to
clear roads and parking lots before you begin your commute. Your parking lot may be
skipped if there are cars preventing operations,
and with the tight time-line the snow plows
are on, it is uncertain when they can make it
back through your area. The teams clear roads
much more quickly and efficiently if there is
little or no traffic and you are kept safe while
this operation is ongoing. If you do encounter
a snow plow while driving, yield to the vehicle
and give it a wide berth. These machines cannot stop quickly and are most likely spreading a de-icer and anti-skid substance mixture
behind them. Additionally, you can help by
slowing down and allowing additional time
for your trips.
What facility managers should be doing
Facility managers should be readying building occupants for the upcoming snow season.
Hopefully your facility has a snow removal
schedule, snow shovels and plenty of sand or
ice-melt on hand. If facility managers do not
have any ice-melt on hand, they can acquire
it from 21st CES Supply.
“During snow and ice events, building
managers should also ensure entrances, exits
and handicap areas are slip-free,” said Colonel
Buckman.
Safety is everyone’s business and all occupants should be looking for ways to help out.
Additionally, remember our base grounds
contractors are only responsible for common
sidewalks. The organizations are responsible
for sidewalks within 100 feet of the facility.
Base housing occupants
Snow removal will begin once the snow
has accumulated to two inches. Removal will
continue until the accumulation has subsided.
Snow removal for general officers’ quarters will
begin at one-quarter inch. Snow will also be
removed in resident driveways and the walkways up to the front porch, providing there are
no vehicles in the driveway. The snow removal
company will observe quiet hours between 8
p.m. and 6 a.m. During this time, snow removal
will be limited to housing streets only.
Snow parade
21st CES is bringing back its annual snow
parade. The parade will take place at 3 p.m. Oct.
23. The vehicles will stop for a briefing at the
main child development center and proceed
down Peterson Boulevard. Please come out
and see the snow plows, fire trucks and our
special guest, Santa Claus!

Colorado critter’s bark
is worse than bite
by Staff Sgt. Michael Holmes
21st Civil Engineer Squadron
As Soldiers and Airmen return from the Middle East, area
residents are reporting increased sightings of “camel spiders,”
a creature purported to grow as big as a dinner plate.
But the camel spider is not a spider at all, it is technically
a Solifugid.
Solifugids are neither spiders nor scorpions. They are also
not insects. They look like a cross between a spider, a scorpion and an insect, and are closely related to all three.
Some may view the camel spider as an intimidating force
to be dealt with, but in reality there is not much to fear
from them.
While photos from Iraq show what appears to be a huge
spider, one type that is indigenous to Colorado is small
— about the size of a quarter — and poses no threat to
humans.
Overseas the tales of their ferocity and gargantuan sizes
are greatly exaggerated; some “spiders” can grow to two
inches in length, but most are less than one inch long. They
do not attack or prey on large mammals, but feed on a
variety of other creatures including scorpions, insects and
spiders.
The distinct arachnid group consists of several hundred
species distributed in tropical and desert regions worldwide, including Colorado. They are primarily nocturnal
creatures that hide in animal burrows, and under rocks
and other objects.
Although camel spiders lack venom glands, their powerful jaws are capable of inflicting painful bites. Reports of
camel spiders chasing people are simply a result of their
seeking shade from the sun — as the person moves to avoid
the camel spider, it follows them in an effort to stay in the
shade thus giving the impression of being chased. They’re
really not much to worry about.
For information about pests on base, call 556-7754. To
schedule a pest manager to treat or inspect your area, contact the 21st Civil Engineer Squadron customer service at
556-4030 for prompt service.

veterans, and deceased servicemembers. The Peterson library
will display a tree featuring the handmade ornaments created by the community to honor a servicemember.
To participate:
1) Simply create a handmade ornament honoring the
servicemember. (Ornament templates will be available free
of charge at the library or you can make your own. Place a
photograph, a copy of a photograph, or the servicemember’s
name and any appropriate dates and/or comments in the
ornament.)
2) Bring the ornament to the Peterson library during the
month of October where it will be placed on the tree with
other commemorative ornaments.
3) Stories about individual servicemembers can also be
submitted and will be displayed in a binder near the tree.

Airmen use computers at the Peterson library Sept. 16. The library received the Department of Defense Morale, Welfare and Recreation Premier
Status Award at an annual DoD library workshop in July. The library is one of seven throughout the Air Force to be honored with the award. The library
offers 18 computer stations with commercial Internet access and Wi-Fi amongst its many resources. (Air Force photo by Thea Skinner)

“We have a fairly large collection of resources,” Ms.
Kucharski said.
The library also provides a Dantes Subject Standardized
Test, a college level examination. Some colleges accept the
credits once the test is successfully completed in areas
such as public speaking.
As part of Colorado Library Consortium, library books
are provided on loan based on customer needs, and as an
Air Force general library, it contains three focus areas:
mission support, education support and quality of life
support.
The library provides mission support by purchasing
materials for installations in the Front Range including
Buckley AFB and Schriever AFB along with occasionally
ordering items for geographically separated units such
as Thule Air Base, Greenland.

port from (the force support squadron). To be a premier
library you need to not only have an excellent staff but
the backing from up above to provide what the customers
need,” Ms. Kucharski said.
The library services many active duty and non-active
duty customers including staff and patrons of the child
development center and the education center. The library
assists the education center in carrying out their mission
of helping develop military personnel.
“Our library is competitive with other civilian libraries and provides a level of service that is commensurate
with other community libraries,” said Susan Wilson, 21st
Force Support Squadron Force Development Flight chief.
“I was very excited for the library — that they were able to
meet those requirements. They could not have done that
without leadership support. I think the support is evident
in being able to have program offerings — I am sure they
can look forward to more support of that nature.”

If youC.

what would you change?
Name:
Staff Sgt. Twana Borel
Duty Title:

Operator
Unit:
76th Space Control Squadron
Hometown:
Born in Kingston, Jamaica,
raised in Anchorage, Alaska
Time in Service:

Staff Sgt. Twana Borel
was selected for this week’s
First Knight award. This
award is designed to recognize outstanding Airmen
each week for the work they
do every day.
Air Force photo
Favorite Music:
I don’t have a favorite music.
I love to listen to a wide variety of music from reggae to
classical.
Time assigned to Unit:
7 months
Last Good Book Read:
I really enjoyed the “Left
Behind” series.
How has joining the Air Force
impacted your life?
The Air Force has helped
me find a career path. Before
joining the Air Force, I
was lost and unhappy with
my jobs. I had no sense of
accomplishment.
Whatwww.frontrangeobgyn.com
do you like most about
being an Airman?
What is your favorite thing
about serving in the Air
Force?
The feeling of accomplishment and contribution.
Staff Sgt. Borel is quite
honestly a “super troop.” She
undeniably hit the ground
running after arriving from
Schriever in February, and
has very quickly become a
great operator.
During the 2009 21st
OG Ops Standardization
Team Inspection, she was a
“Professional Performer.”
Additionally, she was recently
selected to support the 21st
Operations Group commander in her challenging
operations evaluation. Staff
Sgt. Borel has exceeded
expectations thus far and
we expect big things from
her in the future. – Master

Teenage sharks. It seems nobody understands them.
Researchers have traditionally focused either upon
baby sharks confined to shallow waters or on oceanroaming adults. Much less is known about intermediate-age sharks, which are the breeders of tomorrow
and roughly similar in development to human
teenagers.
A novel study in the Bahamas, however, sheds new
light. Over 14 years, scientists followed the development of lemon sharks born in the area. They found that
fear of deep water and the bigger predators that live
there, combined with abundant prey in mangrove
swamps, keeps island-born lemon sharks in home
waters for years.
This was something of a revelation and an important
finding. As humans develop the coast and eradicate
shark habitat, they threaten not only the existence of
baby sharks but much older specimens as well.
Conversely, protecting such habitat helps sharks of all
ages.
It’s been a long-standing assumption that extreme
cold is tougher on younger, smaller animals because,
with less mass, they can’t retain heat as well. But a
new study of musk oxen — who live and forage
through Arctic winters where temperatures drop as low
as minus 58 degrees Fahrenheit — shows young oxen
don’t lose any more heat energy than adults. The discovery is important because it was presumed high
musk oxen calf mortality was largely due to harsh winters. Now scientists have to look for new answers.

BRAIN SWEAT
Why is it common for digital alarm clocks to have 9minute snooze intervals, rather than 10?
PRIME NUMBERS
28.16 — Number of calculations, in trillions, that the
Cystorm supercomputer at Iowa State University can
perform per second
Source: Iowa State University
BRAIN SWEAT ANSWER
By setting the snooze time to 9 minutes, the alarm
clock needs only to monitor the last digit of the time.
So, if you hit snooze at 7:45, the alarm goes off again
when the last digit hits 4. If it was a 10 minute interval,
the alarm would go off immediately or the clock would
require additional circuitry to monitor multiple digits of
time.
FACTS’
QUIRKS OF NATURE
Like humans, cats are right- or left-handed. Or in this
case, right- or left-pawed. The preference, according to
a new report, appears to depend upon the cat’s sex:
females tended to favor their right paw while males
were mostly lefties.
WHAT IS IT? ANSWER
An ornate horned frog (Ceratophrys ornata). The
species is native to northern Argentina, Uruguay and
the Rio Grande do Sul region of Brazil. The frogs have
exceptionally fast growth rates. Within two weeks of
hatching, they have metamorphosed into adult frog
form. They can grow quite large, reaching 6 inches
across in less than six months.
Carnivorous, they gulp down hapless lizards,
rodents, small birds, large insects and other frogs in
single mouthfuls. Their mouths are so big, in fact, that
they have been nicknamed “Pac-Man” frogs.
