A Message from the Jumpstart Alumni Network

A Message from the Jumpstart Alumni Network
In the wake of last week's tragic events, we would like to take a moment to acknowledge and thank our
alumni and volunteers who ran as members of Jumpstart's Boston Marathon Team. The determination
they showed in the face of such adversity was truly admirable, and their commitment to supporting
Jumpstart's mission is inspiring. We extend our deepest sympathies to the runners, families, and friends
who continue to feel the impact of this tragedy, and we hope for a strong recovery for the community of
Boston and beyond.

President & CEO Naila Bolus and
Tri-State Executive Director Sharon Reilly
On April 17, 2013, Jumpstart hosted the first of
four Scribbles to Novels galas to celebrate the
power of the written word. Many acclaimed
guests and authors attended the event in New
York City, including best-selling author,
actress, and producer Tina Fey, Newark
Mayor the Honorable Cory A. Booker, and
Glamour Magazine Editor-in-Chief Cindi
Leive. During the event, Tina and Cindi
interviewed three lucky Jumpstart alumni and
discussed the lasting impacts of Jumpstart's
program. Many thanks to our alumni who
participated in this exciting opportunity: Tovah
Gottesman, Columbia University '09-'11; Gillian
Sharkey, Temple University '05-'06 and current
Jumpstart Program Director; and David
Carmel, co-founder of Jumpstart. This unique

CLASS NOTES
Ariana Westbrook, University of Washington, CM & TL '09-'12
Ariana, who is currently an Instructional Assistant at City Year,
recently shared the impact of her Jumpstart experience and how it
shaped her future:
"As a result of my service with Jumpstart, I have a confidence in the
methods I use when I work with children. I believe that the
combination of the consistent guidance and quality of leadership
that the site managers displayed has not only prepared me for a
career in education, but it has also given me the skills needed to be
a successful young adult."

Highlights webpage.
Mary McKillip, Jumpstart Boston, CM '98-'00
Mary will be featured in the next "Where Are They Now?" blog series, discussing her Jumpstart
experience and her current work as an educational research scientist. Here's a preview of her story:
"My experience with Jumpstart and the preschool research study, as well as my own humbling
experiences in the classroom, have given me this amazing respect for teachers and what they're doing in
schools. Society often blames teachers for what's going on in the classrooms - I feel that we are missing
the other pieces to the puzzle."
Stay tuned to read the rest of Mary's story on Jumpstart's blog.
Best,
The Alumni Team
