Take a look at all the activities and games because you may feel there are some activities and/or games which will be also be suitable for your section. Have fun Samantha ©www.scoutingbadgeshelp.com | A little note for you… 3 Easy Christmas Activities ©www.scoutingbadgeshelp.com | Easy Christmas Activities 4 Activity No. 1 - Glove Reindeers Suitable for Beavers and Cubs Materials Needed Per Child A glove per child Ribbon to tie around the neck area Alternatively you could use a bow, fluffy string whatever you can get hold of Readymade eyes ask the children if they have an old woolly glove they can bring in. Ideally you want the colour to be brown, beige, tan or orangey Alternatively you could just get some black and white felt and cut circles to make the eyes A read craft berry for the nose Alternatively you can use some scrunched up red tissue paper or piece of red felt Optional brown scrap felt for the ears Optional Fluffy material for the head Some brown cotton to tie around the fingers Wool for stuffing the fingers and body Alternatively you can use cotton wool or cheap material Glue Scissors Instructions 1. Lightly stuff the four fingers with the wool these will be the antlers 2. Using your cotton tie the fingers together at the base with your thread 3. Now stuff the hand portion of the glove which will become the head and tie that off at the wrist of the glove. The thumb should have no stuffing at all 4. Trim all the loose threads. Next, wrap the thumb around to what will be the back of the head and either glue it or sew it to the back 5. Now you need to cut the small circles for the eyes and either use glue to stick them on or sew them 6. Now glue or sew your red nose 7. If you have chosen to create ears then cut out some tear drip shapes and sew to each side of the head below the antlers 8. Tie the bow or whatever material you have chosen around the neck 9. Cut a one-inch square piece of the fake fur and stitch into place between the antlers ©www.scoutingbadgeshelp.com | Activity No. 1 - Glove Reindeers 5 Activity No. 2 - Wool Art Suitable for Beavers and Cubs Materials Needed Per Child Wool – red, green, gold and any other colours you can get hold of Piece of foam, board, cardboard or very thick paper Pencil Scissors Glue Instructions 1. Using a pencil, draw a few basic shapes of your scene onto your chosen surface. You only need to draw the main body of each shape Note: the children can use this picture or create one of their own. If you have a whiteboard just draw this picture on there for them to copy 2. Spread your glue onto the pencil lines of one of the shapes 3. With your wool, start in one corner and press it into the glue, tapping it gently. Let the children know not to press too hard or their fingers will get covered in glue 4. Continue to fill in your shape with the wool 5. Repeat the process for the remaining shapes 6. For the tops of the presents, the star on the tree, and the little red ornaments, you can make some teeny tiny pom poms out of the wool and glue them in place, to do this… Making Pom Poms Use a piece of cardboard 1/2 inch wide, or you can use your finger, wrap the wool around 6 or 7 times Holding the wool together, slide it off the cardboard or finger Tie a second 2 inch small piece of wool around the pinched wool in a knot in the middle to hold it all in place Use your scissors to trim off the folded edges of the wool on each side to create the fuzzy pom pom. ©www.scoutingbadgeshelp.com | Activity No. 2 - Wool Art 6 Activity No. 3 - Glass Painted Candle Holder Suitable for Cubs and Scouts Materials Needed Per Child 1. Jar of any sort – ask each child to bring in an empty clean jar 2. Template (please note on the next couple of pages is the same template but in different sizes to suit different size glasses) 3. Standard jam jar size (although it would be nice to use a hurricane lamp or thick tumbler it will be quite costly to expect the children to bring this in so using a jam jar size is easier for everyone. Also you will know what size candles to buy) 4. Transparent tape 5. Glue with fine-tip applicator 6. Bowl 7. Clear glass glitter 8. Red Candles (ask each child if they can bring in a red candle from home that will fit nicely into a standard size jam jar. It might be better that you ask each parent for a pound and you buy them all the same size) Preparation 1. Print out the templates on the next two pages (I have made some different sizes so they will fit in different size jar/glasses) - You need enough for each child Instructions 1. Roll up the template and slide it inside the glass with the design facing outward 2. Secure the top with transparent tape 3. Using the glue outline just one of the pictures then fill it in 4. Working over a bowl sprinkle with the clear glass glitter 5. Let the glue dry 6. Shake off excess glitter 7. Now glue and glitter the next section 8. Continue all the way around the glass 9. Let dry overnight 10. Remove your template 11. Put the red candle in the middle of the glass ©www.scoutingbadgeshelp.com | Activity No. 3 - Glass Painted Candle Holder 7 ©www.scoutingbadgeshelp.com | Activity No. 3 - Glass Painted Candle Holder 8 ©www.scoutingbadgeshelp.com | Activity No. 3 - Glass Painted Candle Holder 9 Activity No. 4 – Paper Plate Rudolph Suitable for Beavers Materials Needed Per Child 1. A small paper plate 2. A large paper plate 3. Brown paint 4. Brown card 5. Red pompom (alternatively you can use scrunched up red tissue paper) 6. 2 large wiggle eyes Alternatively you can use black and white paper cut into circles or white paper and a felt tip black dot for the pupil 7. Brown pipe cleaners (chenille stems) 8. Glue 9. Newspaper (to work on) Instructions 1. Lay down the newspaper as a work space 2. Paint the plates brown and leave to dry 3. Glue the plates together along the rim. The small plate is the head, the large is the body 4. Cut four rectangles of card and glue these along the back of the large plate to form the legs 5. Cut some card for the tail 6. On the small plate, glue a red pompom nose and the two eyes and draw on a mouth 7. Finally twist some pipe cleaners into antler shapes (you need about 2 pipe cleaners for each antler) and stick to the top of the head ©www.scoutingbadgeshelp.com | Activity No. 4 – Paper Plate Rudolph 10 Activity No. 5 – Pipe Cleaner Tree Suitable for Beavers, Cubs and Scouts Materials Needed Per Child 1. Plastic lid for the base (paint it green or red or you can cover it with tissue paper) 2. Red, green and white pipe cleaners (you need about 12-15 for each tree) 3. Rod for the middle of the tree 4. Red pom pom for the top of the tree (alternatively you can use some scrunched red tissue paper) Instructions 1. Take one pipe cleaner and place the centre of it on the stick then twist the end around 2. Bend the ends to create the curl effect 3. Repeat this all the way up the stick alternating the colours ©www.scoutingbadgeshelp.com | Activity No. 5 – Pipe Cleaner Tree 11 Activity No. 6 – Snowflake Curtains Suitable for Beavers, Cubs and Scouts Materials Needed Per Child 1. Four sheets of white paper 2. Assortment of plates of different sizes, saucers, and cups I used old scratched dvds they are a perfect size 3. Print out the example snowflake designs on the next page Preparation 1. Layout the tables with the materials for each child Instructions 1. Draw circles on the paper of different sizes using the objects on a table 2. Cut out the circles 3. Fold circles in half, then fold that in half to quarter the circle making a triangle shape 4. Then fold that in half to make a more narrow triangle 5. Cut into the edges (you can cut both sides) of the folded triangle, snipping away to make the cutout designs in the snowflake, but being careful not to cut it completely in half 6. Here´s some different designs you can try… I have put these on the next page on their own so that you can print just that page to give to the children to look at Making the curtain Sew the snowflakes together into strands using an ordinary sewing needle and thread. Sew several stitches per snowflake linking them together by their tops and bottoms Vary the sizes of snowflakes you use to get a "random" look Hang up each strand before starting the next one so you can see how they look and build up your display gradually Hang the snowflake strands using tape, tacks, or whatever works for you from a curtain rod You can also use the snowflake strands to dress archways and doorways throughout a party space What looks really pretty is if you tie some red ribbon at the top of each strand ©www.scoutingbadgeshelp.com | Activity No. 6 – Snowflake Curtains 12 Snowflake Examples Here´s some simple designs for Beavers Here´s some more complex designs that Cubs and Scouts can try ©www.scoutingbadgeshelp.com | Activity No. 6 – Snowflake Curtains 13 Activity No. 7 – Snowflake Globes Suitable for Beavers, Cubs and Scouts Materials Needed Per Child 1. Jars with lid of any size 2. Plastic Christmas figures (you can buy these cheap at pound shops) – don´t use metal ones because they are prone to rust 3. It would be good to have the jar lids either Silver, Gold, Red or Green if this is not possible then you can paint them with an oil based enamel paint 4. Small piece of sand paper per each four children sharing 5. Clear drying epoxy (glue) small amount for each child (it has to be this type of glue because it is suited to water) 6. Distilled water 7. Pinch of glitter 8. A dash of glycerin (available at chemists) – This is essential because it will stop the glitter from falling too quickly Instructions 1. Sand the inside of the lid until the surface is rough 2. Stick the figurine to the inside of the lid and let the glue dry 3. Fill the jar almost to the top with distilled water 4. Add a pinch of glitter and a dash of glycerine this will keep the glitter from falling too quickly. WARNING – do not add too much because the glitter will stick to the bottom of the jar when it is flipped 5. Screw the lid tightly being careful not to dislodge the figurine 6. Turn the jars over and back again and let it snow! ©www.scoutingbadgeshelp.com | Activity No. 7 – Snowflake Globes 14 Activity No. 8 – Santa Suitable for Beavers Materials Needed Per Child 1. A Santa template (found on the next page) 2. Scissors 3. Colouring pencils or pens 4. 4 brass paper fasteners Preparation 1. Print out a copy of the next page you need one for each child 2. Layout each table with their materials Directions Get the children to: 1. Colour their Santa 2. Cut out their Santa 3. Attach the legs and arms to the Santa’s body using “Brass Paper Fasteners” ©www.scoutingbadgeshelp.com | Activity No. 8 – Santa 15 ©www.scoutingbadgeshelp.com | Activity No. 8 – Santa 16 Easy Christmas Games ©www.scoutingbadgeshelp.com | Easy Christmas Games 17 Game No. 1 – Christmas Candy Card Game Suitable for Beavers, Cubs and Scouts Materials Needed 1. Lots of small sweets and chocolates 2. Deck of cards for the leader 3. 2 Decks of cards for the children (if you only have about 10 children then 1 deck will do) Preparation 1. Place the sweets and chocolates in the middle of the room in a Christmassy decorated basket or something similar How to play: 1. Get the children to sit in a circle around the basket of candy but as far away as possible 2. Get one leader/helper to sit in the middle with the candy 3. Walk around the circle and deal out the cards so that each child has about 4 cards each 4. Now using your deck of cards call out the number on the first card 5. The children look at their cards to see if they have that number – if they do they run to the middle with their card pass it to the person in the middle and pick one sweet/chocy and bring it back to their place 6. If you are Cubs or Scouts make it more exciting by reading out the cards quickly 7. If you run out of cards turn them over and start again 8. If the kids run out of cards and you have spare candy you can deal out more cards maybe this time just give them two each ©www.scoutingbadgeshelp.com | Game No. 1 – Christmas Candy Card Game 18 Game No. 2 – Lucky Dip Suitable for Beavers Materials Needed 1. Lots of small sweets, wrapped chocolates, small objects, carrots, small toys etc. 2. Big deep box 3. Lots of scrunched up colourful paper Preparation 1. Place all your items in the big box and mix them up with the scrunched paper and place it in the middle of the room How to play: 1. Get the children to sit in a circle around the basket of candy but as far away as possible 2. Let the children take it in turns to go to the box and take a lucky dip 3. Depending on what you fill the box with they may be able to have a couple of goes ©www.scoutingbadgeshelp.com | Game No. 2 – Lucky Dip 19 Game No. 3 – Cubby Santa Suitable for Beavers, Cubs and Scouts Materials Needed 1. Extra large santa suit if you have a large group it would be good to get more than one suit but they need to be the same size (once you read the instructions this will become clearer) Balloons (the amount will depend on how many children you have) How to play: 1. Split your group into separate teams the amount of teams will depend on how many santa suits you have 2. Each team needs to pick a santa 3. The santas put on their large santa costume 4. Hand each team a pack of balloons (not blown up – for Beavers you can have the balloons already blown up) 5. When you say go the players quickly have to blow up the balloons then place them inside their Santa’s suit 6. Give them two minutes to do this 7. Now take out the balloons from each teams suit and count them. The team that managed to put the most amount of balloons in their santa suit wins. NOTE: If you can only get hold of one santa suit then just get each team to go one at a time ©www.scoutingbadgeshelp.com | Game No. 3 – Cubby Santa 20 Game No. 4 – Dream Gift Suitable for Cubs and Scouts Materials Needed Per Child 1. Piece of paper and pencil for each child 2. Box big enough to fit about 20 pieces of paper How to play: 1. Give everyone a piece of paper and a pencil 2. Each child has to write down their dream gift money no object 3. Now get them to fold the paper in half and put it into the box 4. The leader needs to shake the box or mix up the paper thoroughly 5. Now get each child to retrieve one slip of paper 6. In turn get each child to read out what is on their piece of paper they then have to guess who wrote down this gift 7. If they guess correctly they could receive a prize 8. If they guess it wrong they put the slip back into the box (therefore the person who wrote it shouldn´t shout out) Note: Make sure all children remember what they wrote down! ©www.scoutingbadgeshelp.com | Game No. 4 – Dream Gift 21 Game No. 5 – Pin The Nose On Rudolph Suitable for Beavers, Cubs and Scouts Materials Needed 1. Large picture of a reindeer 2. Cut some red card circles and write each childs name on the red side then place some double back tape on the back 3. Blindfold for each child (they can use their neckers) Preparation You need to make a large reindeer… 1. What would be really great is if you could get a parent or helper to paint a large reindeer on a piece of wood or something similar. You could keep this to use every year 2. Alternatively you can draw a reindeer one on flip chart size paper (if this is not possible you can stick lots of pieces of paper together to make one large one) 3. If you are going to do a quick sketch yourself then here´s some easy pictures to copy… How to play: 1. Give each child a reindeer nose 2. Decide how far away you want to position the children from the reindeer (this should be dependent on their age so the younger they are the nearer they should be to the reindeer) mark this spot on the floor 3. Now the first child walks blinded towards the reindeer and sticks his red nose where he thinks it should go on the picture 4. Once all the children have had a go at placing the nose on the reindeer the leader announces 3 children who got the closest and awards them a prize 5. If you have a relatively small group and enough time you could play the game one more time ©www.scoutingbadgeshelp.com | Game No. 5 – Pin The Nose On Rudolph 22 Game No. 6 – Blizzard Suitable for Beavers, Cubs and Scouts Materials Needed 1. A large supply of white polystyrene packing popcorn 2. A small Christmassy container for each team – this could be a Santa hat, woolly hat or small bucket 3. Split your group into teams of six (if you have a small group have smaller teams) 2. Stand the teams at one end of the room and place the large containers at the other end of the room opposite them 3. Place a large box of packing popcorn on the floor in the middle of the room 4. At your signal the first person in each team race to the middle and shovel the pieces of polystyrene into their small container then race to empty it into the bigger container 5. Once they get back to their team the next person can go 6. You can either: a. Stop the game when all the children in a team has had a go at putting the polystyrene into the large container b. Or when an allotted time is up 7. Either way at the end check who has put the most amount of polystyrene into the large container, this team is declared the “Blizzard Winner” 8. Play the game again if you wish ©www.scoutingbadgeshelp.com | Game No. 6 – Blizzard 23 Game No. 7 – Whose Santa Suitable for Beavers, Cubs and Scouts Materials Needed 1. Optional: Rudolph horns How to play: 1. All the children sit in a circle and one is selected to be ´Rudolph´ 2. ‘Rudolph’ leaves the room wearing their horns 3. Once ´Rudolph´ leaves the room another child is chosen to be ´Santa´ 4. ‘Rudolph’ then comes back and sits back in their place in the circle. ´Santa´ starts winking (or blinking for youngsters) at people in the circle. A person who has been winked at shouts a loud “HO! HO! HO!’. ´Rudolph´ must try to identify ´Santa´. Wrap each parcel (shoebox) before the evening 3. Layout four tables with the pieces of wrapping paper (enough for the amount in the team) 4. Place tape on each table 5. Place the piece of ribbon on each table (if you have decided to use it for Scouts) 6. Place markers at the other end of the room from the table for each team to stand on How to play: 1. Divide the children into teams of let´s say 4 2. Get each team to stand on their marker 3. Hand the first child in each team their wrapped gift box 4. On the leaders go signal the first team member leaves their group, runs to the gift station, unwraps their gift, rewraps their gift, and runs back to tag the next team member 5. The next team member repeats the process and so on until all the team members have wrapped the parcel 6. The first team to have each member wrap the gift wins 7. Once the game is finished you can let each team open their present and eat their goodies. ©www.scoutingbadgeshelp.com | Game No. 8 – Gift Wrap Relay 25 Game No. 9 – Rip a Christmas Tree Suitable for Cubs and Scouts Materials Needed 1. Choose the list you want to start with 3. On your word go the team have to list as many things as they can on the list (give them an allotted time let´s say a minute. Make it age specific so if it´s Beavers give them more time than Cubs and so on) 4. The winning time gets a small prize 5. Do They Know It's Christmas (Bob Geldof) It's Christmas time; there's no need to be afraid At Christmas time, we let in light and we banish shade And in our world of plenty we can spread a smile of joy Throw your arms around the world at Christmas time But say a prayer to pray for the other ones At Christmas time Feed the world Feed the world Feed the world Let them know it's Christmas time again Feed the world Let them know it's Christmas time again Frosty the Snow Man Frosty the snowman was a jolly happy soul, With a corncob pipe and a button nose and two eyes made out of coal. Frosty the snowman is a fairy tale, they say, He was made of snow but the children know how he came to life one day. There must have been some magic in that old silk hat they found. For when they placed it on his head he began to dance around. O, Frosty the snowman was alive as he could be, And the children say he could laugh and play just the same as you and me. Thumpetty thump thump, thumpety thump thump, Look at Frosty go. Thumpetty thump thump, thumpety thump thump, Over the hills of snow.
