China: Children’s Clothing Safety Standards The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of the People's Republic of China (AQSIQ) and the Standardization Administration of China (SAC) have approved three national standards for children's clothing, as follows. The standards went into effect on August 1, 2009. GB/T 22702-2008, Standard Safety Size for Drawstrings on Children's Upper Wear GB/T 22704-2008, Code of Practice for the Design and Manufacture of Children's Clothing to Promote Mechanical Safety GB/T 22705-2008, Safety Specifications for Cords and Drawstrings on Children's Clothing Background The standardization and approval of these three national standards has primarily focused on the potential safety risks caused by the mechanical hazards of children's clothing. Presently, China's safety standard series for children's wear run parallel with international standards, and the main safety index and methods of safety inspection have achieved the same level as other international standards. GB/T 22702-2008 - Standard Safety Size for Drawstrings on Children's Upper Wear – referenced to ASTM F1816-2004 This standard specifies the safety requirements for drawstrings on children’s upper wear for children under the age of 14 and applicable to garment parts such as hood and neck, waist and lap, etc. It also addresses specifications for drawstrings in accordance with the age of the children (infant, children and adolescents). GB/T 22704-2008 - Code of Practice for the Design and Manufacture of Children's Clothing to Promote Mechanical Safety – referenced to BS 7907-1997 This standard specifies the materials, design and production of clothing for children under the age of 14. It offers a comprehensive explanation of the important issue of mechanical safety of children's clothing in regards to the exchange of information, materials and parts purchasing, design details, manufacturing process as well as testing and inspection of materials and clothing. GB/T 22705-2008 - Safety Specifications for Cords and Drawstrings on Children's Clothing – referenced to EN 14682-2007 This standard specifies the safety requirements of cords and drawstrings on clothing for children under the age of 14. These requirements are based on the different garment parts of children's clothing (hood and neck, waist, lap, sleeves, etc).
