New catalog
Library staff members are having a great
time selecting and categorizing their
favorite books using the Lists feature in our
new catalog. While anyone with a Library
account can create a list, staff created lists
appear under the tab, “Staff Picks” in the
new catalog.
A list is simply a themed collection
of books, videos, websites and other
resources. The creator chooses a list title,
description, and an audience (children,
teens, adults), then selects items to
include along with a personal annotation
about each item they included, and
why. The list can include books, movies,
websites and more.
Library staff might actually be having
too much fun making lists; for example:
GreenwichLibraryTeens created Zombies
are People Too!; GreenwichMusic created
Weird/Obscure/Rare LPs That Can Be
Found On hoopla Digital; and kudos to
CosCobLibrary for creating The Good Girls
List of Naughty Books (which includes the
heart-pounding, mouth-watering page
turner, Fifty Shades of Chicken).
We offer many ways to discover your
next read. Our weekly column “Checking
out Books” appears in the Sunday Pulse
section of the Greenwich Time. Library
staff members also present themed book
displays each week. For at-home browsing,
try the New and Recommended page on
our website to find award winners.
And for a more personal touch, our Library
staff are more than happy to suggest a
book or film specifically for you. We’re a
friendly, creative bunch, as you can see
from our Staff Picks Lists.

Greenwich native Adam Braun is the
Founder and CEO of Pencils of Promise,
an award-winning nonprofit organization
that has opened more than 150 schools
across Africa, Asia, and Latin America. His
debut book, The Promise of a Pencil: How an
Ordinary Person Can Create Extraordinary
Change, is based on his experiences
launching and running an effective
nonprofit in a new media world. He will
be interviewed by Joan Lunden, journalist,
author, and former co-host of ABC’s Good
Morning America, in the Cole Auditorium,
Monday, May 5 at 7 pm.
Pencils of Promise was founded in 2008
with just $25 using what Braun coined
as a “For-Purpose” approach to blending
nonprofit idealism with for-profit business
principles. Braun, a 2002 graduate of
Greenwich High School, Scholar-Athlete,
and captain of the basketball team, began
working at hedge funds at the age of sixteen,
seemingly destined for a career on Wall
Street. One day while traveling overseas
during college he met a young boy begging
on the streets of India and asked him what
he wanted most in the world. The answer
was, “a pencil.”
Local Author
Adam Braun
in conversation
with Joan Lunden
he went to work as a consultant at Bain
& Company in order to learn how to run
an organization not just with passion, but
with the commitment to results that is
recognized as good practice in the business.
He then used these skills to launch Pencils
of Promise.
Pencils of Promise also has a few other
Greenwich ties. Brad Haugen, who graduated
from GHS in 2000, is Chairman of the
Board of Directors, and Tom Casazzone, who
graduated in 1999, is the CFO.
A graduate of Brown University, Braun has
been featured on Morning Joe and CBS This
Morning. He has been named to the Forbes
“30 Under 30” List and Wired Magazine’s
“50 People Who Are Changing the World”.
AuthorsLive@GreenwichLibrary is made
possible through the support of the
Greenwich Library Board of Trustees and
contributions by generous donors. This
series is open to all at no charge, but seating
in the Cole Auditorium is limited and will
be available on a first come, first served
basis. Doors will open at 6:30 pm and
Diane’s Books will sell at the event.

The author of eight books of poetry, Mark Doty is the only
American poet to have won Great Britain’s T. S. Eliot Prize. Fire
to Fire: New and Selected Poems was published in 2008 and won
the National Book Award for that year. Doty has also received
two NEA fellowships, Guggenheim, Ingram Merrill and Rockefeller Foundation Fellowships, National Book Critics Circle

The Flinn Gallery at Greenwich Library
will be displaying the work of five artists in a show entitled Other Worlds. The
show of sculpture, paintings and prints
by Monica Banks, Kees de Waal¸ Fran
Forman, Carol Schwartz and the late Guy
Stevens, begins on Thursday, May 8. All
are invited to attend the opening reception
from 6 to 8 pm.
he formed the De Waal Foundation to
improve the lives of children in 10 Latin
American countries. “I think of myself as
an artist who gives life to a work of art by
capturing an emotion and setting it free on
paper,” de Waal said. His art of fantasy and
delight is shown around the world, from
Switzerland to the Netherlands, from Peru
to the United States.
Imaginative, sometimes fantastical and
whimsical worlds, are created by the five
artists who each see and dream, people,
creatures and worlds of their own.
Photographer and mixed-media artist,
Fran Forman, inhabits a world of dreams
and memory, where she blends photos
with painting, portraits into dream landscapes. “I invite the viewer to engage with
me in an imaginative discourse and to enter into a world of dreams and memory,”
Forman said. Forman is a Resident Scholar
at the Women’s Studies Research Center
at Brandeis University. A frequent award
and grant winner, her widely-exhibited
work is presently on tour in China and she
is represented by galleries from Newport
Beach to Beijing.
Monica Banks, an award-winning sculptor, has permanent public works in The
Bronx, Binghamton, N.Y. and Charlotte,
N.C. Banks has had many solo shows and
has been included in a large number of
group exhibitions. Her Cloud series uses
childhood toys, trinkets and jewelry, in
tangles of wire that float from the ceiling.
Banks also creates fanciful, tiny porcelain
figures to adorn teacups.
Greenwich resident, Kees de Waal, won
first prize in a national contest when
he was only 14, in his native Holland.
He founded a retail chain of 250 men’s
clothing stores in Europe. After retiring,
Sculptor Carol Schwartz, uses layers
of laminated, doweled-together lumber, working them into life-size human
figures. Building them up in layers, she
carves them into shapes, painting the
surfaces. Recently, she has ventured into
Guy Stevens,
Comes to Dinner
the creation of gigantic handbags, made
of plaster-soaked burlap. Since 1997,
Schwartz has shown widely along the
Eastern seaboard.
Guy Stevens, was a native of Greenville,
South Carolina who passed away recently.
He used flamboyant colors, whimsy and
flat lyrical shapes to create his dreamlike
narratives, reminiscent of both primitive and impressionistic art. “I am an
intuitive, expressive colorist,” Stevens
explained. “I strive to give the viewer a
sense of uplifting, inner connection to
my images.” He worked often in Greenville, South Carolina, New York City,
San Francisco, Montreal, Paris, Munich,
Mexico and Bermuda.
The show will continue until June 18, on
view from 10 am - 5 pm Mondays through
Saturdays, with extended hours to 8 pm
Thursdays and from 1 to 5 pm on Sundays.
Curators for the show include Flinn
Committee members Jamee Becker,
