About the Directory
This publication is intended to be a quick reference for referring physicians and
their staffs, providing a general overview to Children’s Hospital and its specialty
care and support services on campus. This directory is not a comprehensive
medical staff directory.
This information and more is also available on our web site, www.chsys.org.
Many physicians in private practice have privileges at Children’s Hospital and
may be included on the website upon request.
The Directory of Pediatric Services is printed annually by the Children’s Hospital
Corporate Communications Department. All information has been verified and
was accurate at time of printing.
Any edits or additions for future editions are welcome and can be directed
to Tiffany Kaczorowski in Corporate Communications at 205.939.6916 or
205.939.6660 (main number) or via email at [email protected].

From our CEO
Dear Colleague:
We are pleased to provide you with the 2011
Directory of Pediatric Services. Please replace any
older versions with this one. You can also find the
most up-to-date directory and other resources for
referring physicians on the Healthcare Professional
section of www.chsys.org.
After much deliberation, Children’s has decided to restructure its physician
relations department. For more than 25 years, representatives of the
health system have traveled the state, bringing to your offices health system
news and updates. In turn, you and your office staff have shared your
suggestions and concerns with these representatives and we thank you for
your feedback throughout the years.
We can continue to communicate effectively using today’s new technology.
By phasing out the routine travel portion of the physician relations function,
we can now focus our resources and attention on a new, enhanced
customer service effort.
We hope to use e-mail sparingly yet effectively to share pertinent news
with you. We will strive to keep the Healthcare Professionals section of
the website robust and easy to use. Finally, we are establishing Physician
Link (205) 212-7479 which we hope will assist you and facilitate access
to services or patient correspondence. This will not take the place of the
normal referral process.
We ask for your support as we make this transition. Please contact Lori
Ewoldsen, V.P. Customer Service at (205) 939-9434 or lori.ewoldsen@
chsys.org with questions and suggestions.
Very truly yours,
Wm. Michael Warren, Jr.
Chief Executive Officer

Patient Referral Information
One Stop Calling / Patient Placement
(205) 212-7200
One Stop Calling/Patient Placement is to assist referring
physicians with admitting patients to Children’s Hospital in an
emergency situation. If a child is seen by their primary care
doctor and is deemed ill enough to need a bed right away, this
serves as the contact number for referring pediatricians when
making immediate placement arrangements.
How does it work?
1.
Receive call from referring physician
2.
Obtain information about patient and a direct
call-back number
3.
Contact appropriate CHS physician and initiate conference call
4.
If decision is made to transfer, the Patient Placement
Coordinator will call referring facility with room and
phone number for the nurse to call report
Physician Link
(205) 212-7479
Physician Link is a telephone resource for referring physicians to
use for any non-emergency issues or concerns.
This is also the best way for which primary care physicians and
office staff can receive guidance throughout the referral process
and obtain general CHS information.
Referring physicians can:
• Call Monday-Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm
• Provide general information
• Assist in patient follow-up
• Assist in physician concerns
• Provide link to resolve issues
• Help facilitate the patient referral process
4
Please refer to individual divisions for direct referral phone numbers.
Patient Referral Information
Healthcare Professionals Website
www.chsys.org
The Healthcare Professionals Website provides forms, directions
and contact information to help facilitate the referral process. In
addition, the website will reflect the latest news regarding CHS
divisions.
Our updated website offers several services:
• Patient referral forms
• One Stop Calling / Patient Placement
• Physician Link
• CME Opportunities
• Maps and Directions

Expansion Facility
The expansion project will enable the hospital to expand services provided to
pediatric patients, improve operating efficiencies, address growth in the pediatric
population served, and increase access to family-centered services, as well as
provide an environment conducive to improving and expanding pediatric teaching
and research.
Children’s Hospital is currently licensed for 275 specialty pediatric beds (290
including NICU bassinets). Upon completion of the building, the number of
licensed specialty pediatric beds will increase to 332.
In recognition of Trustee Ben Russell’s $25 million gift, Children’s entire downtown
campus will be renamed the Benjamin Russell Hospital for Children. The opening
of the new facility is planned for 2012.

General Inpatient Service
The General Inpatient (GIP) Service provides care to all hospitalized infants,
children and adolescents except for those admitted to a surgical service,
subspecialty or the intensive care unit. The GIP service is staffed by nine
faculty members, all of whom serve as attending physicians on inpatient
teams and teach residents and medical students in the clinical setting. In
addtion, GIP faculty are involved in research aimed at process improvement,
enhancing communication with primary care and referring physicians and
improving clinical outcomes.
Physician members of the GIP service receive support from a
multidisciplinary team that includes nurse case managers, social workers
and hospital-based pharmacists. The goal of the GIP service is to provide
prompt, family-centered, high-quality care to hospitalized patients and
to see that hospital care is effectively linked to outpatient care following
discharge.
