Funds from this year’s plunge will be used to renovate the skate park and BMX course just off Gould Street. The City of Owosso Parks and Recreation Commission are hosting the fourth year for Plunge for the Parks. The plunge is already set for success with sponsorship from the local motorcycle group “Iron Wheels,” which is contributing $2,500 toward the cost of the project. The project would not be a possibility without their support and donations from people in the community! All proceeds raised in support of the event will fund tearing out existing asphalt underneath skate ramps in the park and replacing it with cement. Existing ramps will be reinstalled. The skate park is in desperate need of attention as many of the ramps have sunk into the asphalt creating a dangerous lip at their base. Remaining funds will be used to provide extra fill and conditioning of the BMX course. We have approximately 22 plungers lined up this year. For those interested in attending, the plunge will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28. Plungers are asked to wear foot protection and to bring towels and a change of clothes. Costumes are also encouraged. There is no fee to plunge, but plungers are encouraged to gather donations from co-workers and friends. Pledge forms are available by contacting Susan Montenegro, assistant city manager/director of Community Development at [email protected] or at (989) 725-0544. Donations can be made online at http://ci.owosso.mi.us/ Click on the link “Donate to Community Causes” and follow the prompts. You can designate the plunger you wish to sponsor or make a general donation. THE NEW Ice Rink at Bentley Park was dedicated Saturday, Feb. 7, by Mayor Ben Frederick and Owosso Parks and Recreation Chairman Mike Espich. Mayor Ben Frederick stated, “I am formally dedicating this rink to enjoy for people of all ages and for future generations.” Espich gave a special thank you to LAFCU Credit Union for their $2,000 donation, Randy Woodworth for his $500 donation and for helping to put the program together and to former Owosso Parks and Recreation Chairman Nikki Hathaway for organizing the Plunge for the Parks that helped raise the rest of the money needed. The 2015 Plunge for the Parks will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, at Hopkins Lake. ‘No Beer Tent at Fairgrounds!’ “It has come to my attention that there are comments circulating throughout the county that the Shiawassee County Fairgrounds will be having a Beer Tent during the Fair this year. That is definitely not true and our Board of Directors continues the direction of our Fair as a Youth Fair, has not and will not promote the use of alcohol at the Shiawassee County Fair,” said Farm Manager Ric Crawford on Monday. “If you are approached with this discussion, please tell people it is untrue. If you have questions or concerns on this issue, please contact the Shiawassee County Fair Office, 743-3611, or me, Ric Crawford, (810) 499-2051.” The Fair Board officers for 2016 are: President Levi Zdunic; Vickie Oliver as vice-president; Darlene Luchenbill as treasurer; and Cheryl Barton is the secretary; Ric Crawford continues as Fair Manager. Let me be clear, this is in no way an attempt to nullify the will of the people. Contrary to popular belief this is actually the opposite. We would be giving the People the choice to determine the importance they put on public safety, not the commissioners. We value what the people want. This is a completely different proposal, with a completely different intent. This intent is to start the process of building back the Shiawassee County Road Patrol for our community. I have been open and honest about my agenda: Budget, Road Patrol, elimination of health benefits for commissioners, MERS changes and the livestreaming of meetings to bring greater transparency and accountability to the board – as many other counties have already done. I do believe that a community should offer three things: public safety, quality education and a strong infrastructure. When we choose not to deliver on a priority that is core in my beliefs it is a major concern, but still one the people should decide. I welcome any ideas, solutions, or suggestions on how to approach this problem head on I am willing to listen to any idea that may bring our deputies back. I have met with local officials and members of the Sheriff’s Office, and appreciate citizens that stopped by at Coffee Hours to share their thoughts, both in support and opposition. I only ask you do so in a respectful manner. The time for civil discourse is now, and it starts with us. We are considering the building of the foundation for the future of our community, and we are all in this together. I appreciate your respect, opinions and views on these matters. There is an old saying, “Do not tell me what you value, show me your budget, and I will tell you what you value.” I look forward to working with everyone. W a community decision and I will continue to seek out and listen to any and all that are willing to share, preferably in a positive manner. I have taken into consideration the OHS School Bond Proposal. I have also considered the Corunna Bond, the 2016 Operating Millage for the County, and the state sales tax, which you have seen powerful interest groups in opposition likely securing its demise. I also have reviewed state budget information showing a possible $235 million to $450 million shortfall which will likely force a cut to revenue sharing. We will know more on Wednesday, and the following months as the Legislature sets their priorities. The final item of concern is the strategic plan of the Michigan State Police, both short- and long-term. These are all on the radar, and the uncertainty is profuse. These are the reasons for the special meeting. The timeframe, however unfortunate, has forced us to open the dialogue on this issue. The meeting was to be at 5 p.m., Tuesday, in the Surbeck Building in Corunna. The proposal would seek half a mill for 3 years, generating approximately $837,000 per year (approximately $9,000 to the DDA required by the Tax Increment Finance Authority Act, Public Act 450 of 1980). This does not fully fund the Sheriff’s Office. We will still need to seek ways to generate revenue in a creative manner, and seek out waste and efficiencies to get a grip on our short- and long-term finances while reviewing our strategic goals – delivering services to citizens at a price they are willing to pay. This will begin the process of bringing back the patrol, while using value for dollar budgeting. You will A COUPLE FF 1/2 lO ect Se s r e z i t e p Ap Y A D Y R E EV se o l C m p 8 1631 E. On behalf of JC Penney and Capitol Bowl/Val’s Pizzeria, we thank each and every volunteer from CRW (Community Radio Watch) for parking cars during the SRI’s North Pole Express excursions in November/December. Keeping the first five rows of parking available for our customers is critical for the safety of our patrons and our holiday business activities. Many local residents do not realize (or remember) these trips to the North Pole run for four consecutive weekends, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with multiple excursions on many of the days. CRW took on this project for us in 2010, so for five years now, they have been out in the cold, snow, rain, wind and sometimes sunshine to help direct out-of-town guests to the designated parking area between the cinema and bowling center. These volunteers receive personal thank you’s from our businesses, but little public recognition for the important service they provide every year for this project and many others they just do to help in our city. So in November and December this year when you are asked by a parking volunteer “are you here for the train?” please thank them for protecting your parking space to shop at JC Penney or visit Capitol Bowl/Val’s Pizzeria! Comstock St., Owosso 989-723-5151 We Deliver! Valentine’s Day Saturday, February 14th Extended Hours! Perry author Teresa Lee (Schanski) and illustrator Jann Johnson Lardie have Leggins accomplished an early New (Courtesy Graphic) Year Resolution: their second book, “Leggins,” was released Dec. 8, 2014. This is the second book on which the two friends have collaborated. The previous book, “Boxcar Joe,” was published in December 2012. Lardie illustrated both books and did the cover design for “Leggins.” Both artists have lived in the area for most of their lives. Teresa has been writing since she was young. Jann has recently been working in ceramic sculpture and painting. These books are the first she has illustrated. Jann and Teresa are excited to be sharing their new book with so many local friends and neighbors. The two books teach life lessons about being a good friend and taking responsibility. Teresa Lee shared, “Both books blend historical fiction and realistic fiction. The books appeal to all ages, but have life lessons especially targeted toward audiences of readers from third grade and beyond. Even grandparents like these books!” She went on to say, “Everyone has a story to tell. Share those stories. You just never know when one of them might become a best seller!” “Leggins” was written as a tribute to life’s precious gift of having “forever friends.” It is the story of universal friendship. It reveals the way of the world when it comes to young friends and the bonds they develop just by being friends. ay ’s D Valentine “Leggins” tells of the struggles that come with moving away, and the heartbreak of leaving or being left behind. The book also offers a peek into what life was like growing up in the 1950s. Lee’s story is based on true events. Local readers may even recognize themselves somewhere in the storytelling. Some of the same characters from “Boxcar Joe” appear again in “Leggins,” not exactly a sequel, but close. “Come and share the adventures, lessons, laughter and tears as the escapades of ‘Leggins’ and Mary Francis fill the pages and warm your heart,” said Teresa. Teresa and Jann were guests at the Shiawassee Arts Center for a book signing on Saturday, Dec. 20, 2014. The book can be purchased locally at the Shiawassee Arts Center, 206 Curwood Castle Drive, Owosso. Their books are also for sale at Schuler’s Books at Meridian Mall in Okemos or from the author; [email protected] or (517) 625-7267. “Watch for more author/signing events planned in the near future,” she said. Perry Public Library is hosting a signing 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 26. Come and visit. ‘Leggins’ will be available for sale in both hardcover, at $23, and paperback for $13,” it was noted. “We would both love to personally sign your copy,” they said. Their book is now available from many distributors. The book is also available in e-book form. Main St., Owosso • 989-720-8226 The Wednesday Independent • Wednesday, February 11, 2015 BEING SOLD – The landmark Shiawassee Street School in downtown Corunna is being sold to the WODA Group for expected family housing, the group which developed The Sycamore House in the former Arthur Lucas School in Durand and which plans to develop senior housing in the about 100-year-old Lincoln School on Michigan Avenue in Owosso. The Corunna Board of Education voted Monday night to sell the historic building for $150,000 to WODA, said Sup’t. Dave Moore. There are contingencies, including working with the city on approvals and getting necessary grants and financing, he emphasized. At Owosso, WODA’s multi-year effort to purchase the Lincoln School for senior housing has had a number of delays linked to tax credits and other issues even though the city had approved the site plan, which includes an addition and parking west of the Lincoln Street building on the former playground. This is the way the Shiawassee Street School appeared in about April 2014 after the Corunna Public Schools was planning to move all of its programs from the building and offer the property for sale. When built, it had housed the school system’s high school and all lower grades (Independent File Photo/BILL CONSTINE) VALENTINE’S DAY Treat your Sweetheart out to Dinner at Chips! This initiative is part of the ‘Little Hats, Big Hearts’ program to raise awareness of heart disease and stroke. “All babies born at Memorial’s Family Birth Place receive screening for critical congenital heart defects approximately 24 hours after birth with results being sent to the State of Michigan electronically,” says Family Birth Place Manager Linda Cornell, RN. The Harris Nature Center, 3998 Van Atta Road in Okemos is here to help with that. They are holding a program on Michigan Reptile Identification on at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 22. There is a $3 per person or $7 per family fee due at the time of the program. “During this program we will show people ways to identify Michigan reptiles using live specimens to show the variation in characteristics and specific adaptations to habitats,” said Kati Adams, Harris Nature Center Park naturalist.
