Dear Parishioners,
I don’t know about you, but I can’t ever remember having this type of
weather a week before Thanksgiving. Maybe I have put it out of my mind, but the
frigid weather and then some snow in the second week of November is a little much
for me. I just hope that this is not a precursor for things to come.
This weekend brings to a close our liturgical year—at least that is what
some liturgists state. This weekend we celebrate the Solemnity of Christ the King,
the last Sunday in what we call “ordinary time.” Next weekend begins the season
of Advent, the preparation period for the Solemnity Christmas.
Perhaps one of the best images of Jesus as our King comes to us in our responsorial psalm found in readings this weekend. In that Psalm we proclaim that
the “Lord is my shepherd, there is nothing I shall want.” In this particular psalm,
the Lord provides for everything that we should ever want or need in life. And yet,
how many of us find substitutes for centering of our lives, usually in the material
things of this world. But we always need to ask ourselves, which of the material
things that we think important can give us time in this earthly tent, or which of the
material goods that we think essential will we find happiness and love. Or which of
the things of this earth can guarantee a life forever with the God who gifts us with
this life out of His unconditional love. I don’t know about you, but I continue to
struggle with priorities in life, knowing for well that the “Lord is my shepherd,
there is noting I shall ever want.” May each of us grow in our understanding and
our determination to not only pray these words but to live them daily in our lives.
This Thursday, November 27th, is the national holiday of Thanksgiving.
For us as Catholics, this day should be most important as we pause from our busy
schedules and take time to thank our God for the blessings He has bestowed upon
our country and families. We are so rich in abundance in this country that it is imperative that we acknowledge and thank our God for what He has given to us. After
all, this should be first and foremost if we are going to be a stewardship parish.
“Yes, God, we recognize your gifts, and we thank you with grateful hearts.” On
this holiday, we will have a special Mass at 8:00 a.m. The reason for this earlier
start is to avoid the thanksgiving day walk and run which shuts down the entire
Maine Street. Just to forewarn you, Maine street will be shut down to cars at 8:30
a.m. Please do not try to park any cars in the lower parking lot by the cafeteria as
this parking lot will be shut off to us. Also, those cars in our parking lot by the
school will have to exit through Madison Park after Mass. Please do not try to remove any barricades as this may result in a ticket. There are some priorities that I
will never understand here in Quincy but we will try to be a good neighbor.
You will find the CYO envelopes in our pews this weekend. Those who
wish to support the efforts of this organization are asked to use these envelopes with
your donation and deposit them in the collection. The CYO does need our help.

CONGRATULATIONS to Denver (kindergarten) and Rayleigh (second grade) Huff
who made their profession of faith to join our Catholic faith.
CONGRATULATIONS to our second graders who received the Sacrament of Reconciliation this past week. They have worked hard preparing and understanding the
importance of this Sacrament.
COLLECTION OF NON-PERISHABLE FOOD ITEMS: St. Peter students and staff are
collecting non-perishable food items through November 25th for the Quincy Catholic Charities Food Pantry. If you would like to bring items to add to our collection
you may bring them to the school office before 9:00 a.m. on the 25th.
FATHER/DAUGHTER DANCE: Don’t forget to put in your reservation for
the Father/Daughter Dance on December 5th, 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the gym.
Cost to attend is $16 per Father/Daughter or $8 per person. This includes an evening of dancing, a memorable picture an opportunity to win
prizes, enjoy delicious dessert and enjoy a visit with Santa! This event is
open to all St Peter parish fathers and daughters. GSA is sponsoring this event. If
your daughter does not attend St. Peter School and you would like to attend the
Father/Daughter Dance please contact the school office for a reservation form.
QUINCY NOTRE DAME HIGH SCHOOL PLACEMENT TEST: Quincy Notre Dame will
hold a Placement Test on Saturday, December 6, 2014, 8:30-11:00 a.m. at QND
for 8th grade students. This standardized test is the ACT Explore Test providing a
baseline for where a student is academically. All incoming freshmen are encouraged, but not required, to take the Placement Test. If students are unable to take
the test, they are still welcome to enroll at QND. A parent meeting will be held at
10:30 a.m. regarding information about the test and QND.

Fr. Leo’s column continued
On this last Sunday of “ordinary time,” we will
celebrate the Rite of Acceptance at the 9:30 a.m. Mass.
This particular rite in the Rite of Christian Initiation of
Adults marks the beginning of the catechumenate proper as the candidates express and the Church accepts
their intentions to respond to the call to follow the way
of Christ. So I ask your prayers for these catechumens
as well as for our candidates as they continue to pursue
and discern the call of Jesus in their lives.
If you have not filled in your stewardship commitment renewal forms, I ask you to do so and then return them to us either via the collection basket or
through the post office. These are very important to us
and I ask you to make sure that you return them to us.
This is one way that you can show that you do belong to
this parish and want to be one of the “living stones” of
St. Peter Church.
ON THE LIGHTER SIDE: Little Johnny was
left to fix lunch while his mother was away. He was to
prepare his meal and to make some tea. When his
mother returned with a friend, she noticed that Johnny
had already prepared the tea. The two women then
sipped the tea happily while having lunch. “Was it hard
finding the tea strainer in the kitchen?” Johnny’s mother
asked.
“I couldn’t find it, mom, so I used the fly swatter,” Johnny replied.
His mother nearly fainted, so Johnny hastily
added, “Don’t get excited, Mom, I used the old one.”
CYO Fund Drive
Since 1933, there have been countless programs and activities hosted by the Catholic Youth Organization. Thousands of participants, coaches, volunteers and supporters have been involved over the 80+ years. The names and faces have changed at
the CYO, but the mission is still the same…the youth of our community!
The CYO Fund Drive is extremely important. The CYO has always operated on a tight budget. In 2013, QND stopped donating
the utilities and insurance for the CYO gym adding another $20,000 to the CYO budget. The goal for the CYO drive is $40,000.
The fund drive supports the operating expenses to run the quality CYO programs. Basically, it is needed to ‘keep the doors open
and the lights on’. Last year, the parish campaign collected around $7,000 from the 4 parishes. That was down significantly
from previous years.

Yes, it’s that time again. For those of you who
are new, this is a way to help those less fortunate
than ourselves. Several organizations in town
send the needs of people in the
community. Each need is put
on a tag and we put those tags
out on tables in the Narthex.
This will happen November
26 through December 7. You
can choose a tag(s) before or
after church. The gifts are to be
wrapped and returned with the
gift tag securely taped during the weekend of December 13 and 14. This will replace the Social
Concerns 1st Sunday collection for December.
