The Stations of the Cross: the devotion of the Stations of the Cross had its origin in the practice of pilgrims to Jerusalem following the route Jesus carried his
cross on the way to Calvary. A station is a stopping place lying on a journey.
Symbolic routes, reflecting the Via Crucis, (Way of the Cross) were developed
in different parts of Europe. The development was supported by St Francis of
Assisi and the Franciscans who had become the care takers of the holy places in
the Holy Land. By 1731AD Stations were installed in all churches, fourteen
plagues with reliefs or paintings arranged along the church walls. The devotion
is associated with Friday, especially the Fridays of Lent.
A number of years ago there was an anonymous donation of £1000(€1269.73) to
replace the stations in Newmarket Church with ones that could be easily understood. In more recent times there was another donation of €1200 towards the
stations. The stations now installed were originally in the Diocese of Kerry in
19th century and cost €5000.
