PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
SUNSHINE REPORT
Peter Magnusson
Marion Gale
Well, October has been a busy month.
First we had the general meeting. I would like thank
all the members of the board who are not serving
again and welcome the new people elected to the
Board. I had no one run against me for president and
feel that means I have the full support of the membership and staff of the Centre. I will endeavor to lead
this Centre in a professional and businesslike manner.
Second was the Fall Supper. I had the pleasure of
working the dishwashing area in the company of
Linda C, Linda S. and Sadie. It was great fun if that
is what you can say about working. I would like to
thank all the volunteers for their hard work. There will
be more about this event further in the Newsletter.
The Executive of the Board is currently reviewing the
staffing of the office of the Centre. Several of the
membership have come to me and voiced their opinion on this matter. Although I appreciate their opinions and input, I must remind members that this is a
confidential matter and I and other Executive members of the Board are unable to discuss it openly until
it is resolved.
In the month of October Get Well cards were sent to
Marg Freund, Geraldine Nedohin, Barb Skadasheim
and to Val Adrian.
Sympathy cards were sent to Tom & Eileen Addis on
the loss of their Son-in-law, Stephanie Dyck on the
loss of her Father, and Shirley & Mike Michaluk on
the loss of a Sister-in-law. Also a card was sent to
Verna Nicolls on the passing of her Sister. We were
also very sad to hear that Vicki Bugera’s Daughter
passed away just weeks after Vicki moved to Winnipeg to help take care of her after her stroke.
We’ve had word that past members Peter Bosko and
Millie Rojeski have recently passed away. Some of
our current members may remember them from a
couple of years back.
Thanks to those people who pass along information
on any Members who are sick, in hospital or who
may need our sympathy. We want to offer our concern and support to those members.
I am the Centre’s new “Sunshine Girl”, so if you have
any information about our members and would like
to phone me at 642-5992, or leave a message at the
Centre and I will take care of it.
BUILDING & MAINTENANCE
Everett Lloyd
The building is ready for the Winter - the vents are
closed, the well is insulated, the siding has been put
back on the wall.
A brand new flag has been put up, the old one gets
ravaged by the wind.
I am still working on adjusting the steps at the Northwest corner of the Card Yard.
Quote of the Month
“What a great election”, people have been telling me
that we got it 66% right.

Well, the guys are off to a bit of a slow start this
year it seems. The Friday afternoon Wood Carvers
at New Horizons number about 6 at the moment.
Now that golfing is over and the weather getting
worse I suspect that will draw more people to indoor
activities. A big Thanks to new member Claude
Thorsteinson for donating that awesome wood carving work bench and all of the accessories. Claude
also brought a box of assorted woods, the carvers
were busy figuring how to put it to use already.
Did you hear about the guy whose whole left

Shoe Problem?
One evening after work John drove his secretary
home after she was unable to start her car. Not
wanting to bother his wife, Maureen, he decided
not to mention it to her.
Later that night John and Maureen were driving
out to eat when the John spotted a high-heeled
shoe hidden under the passenger seat. Pointing
to something out the passenger window to distract his wife, he picked up the shoe and tossed it
out of his window.
They arrived at the restaurant a short time later
and were about to get out of the car when Maureen enquired, 'John, have you seen my other
shoe?'
Life After Marriage
Daniel and Jessica, young couple, got married and went
happily on their honeymoon. When they got back, Jessica immediately 'phoned her mother and her mother obviously asked, 'How was the honeymoon, dearest?'
'Oh, Ma,' she replied, 'the honeymoon was wonderful. So
romantic...'
Then Jessica burst out crying. 'But, Ma, as soon as we
returned home Daniel started using the most ghastly language... saying things I've never heard before! I mean, all
these awful 4-letter words! You've got to come get me
and take me home.... Please Ma.'
'Calm down, Jessica!,' said her mother, 'Tell me, what
could be so awful? What 4-letter words?'
Still sobbing, Jessica whispered, 'Oh, Ma...words like
dust, wash, cook, and iron.'
A doctor remarked on his patients, ruddy complexion. “I know” the patient said “It’s high blood pressure, it’s from my family. “Your mother’s side, or
father’s side?” questioned the doctor. Neither, my
wife’s. “What?” the doctor said “that can’t be, how
can you get it from your wife’s family?” “Oh yeah,”
the patient responded,
“You should meet them sometime!”
Tall Tale from Vienna Graveyard
Chris Cross, a tourist in Vienna, is going passed Vienna's Zentralfriedhof graveyard on October 31st. All of
a sudden he hears some music. No one is around, so he
starts searching for the source. Chris finally locates the
origin and finds it is coming from a grave with a headstone that reads: Ludwig van Beethoven, 1770-1827.
Then he realizes that the music is the Ninth Symphony
and it is being played backward! Puzzled, he leaves the
graveyard and persuades Tim Burr, a friend, to return
with him.

By the time they arrive back at the grave, the music has
changed. This time it is the Seventh Symphony, but like
the previous piece, it is being played backward. Curious,
the men agree to consult a music scholar. When they
return with the expert, the Fifth Symphony is playing,
again backward. The expert notices that the symphonies
are being played in the reverse order in which they were
composed, the 9th, then the 7th, then the 5th. By the
next day the word has spread and a throng has gathered
around the grave. They are all listening to the Second
Symphony being played backward.
Just then the graveyard's caretaker ambles up to the
group. Someone in the crowd asks him if he has an explanation for the music.
"Oh, it's nothing to worry about" says the caretaker.
"He's just decomposing!"
Lauren was frustrated. She had complained dozens of times to her daughter about her newest gag
of kissing the bathroom mirror immediately after
applying lipstick, but it was all to no avail. Finally,
one day after spending a half hour scrubbing the
mirror, only to find another kiss mark an hour later,
Lauren had enough. “Lizzy!” she hollered, “What?”
came her daughter’s reply through her bedroom
door. I can’t find the toilet brush that I’ve been using to clean the bathroom mirror. Do you have any
idea where it is?” After hearing the gagging from
behind the bedroom door, Lauren knew her days
of cleaning kiss marks off of mirrors were over.

The Gimli Gods were watching over us as we enjoyed another year of the New Horizon's Fall Supper. The weather could
not have been more perfect with the sun shining, the temps in the double digits and no bugs.
Although the supper was later than previous years, we still were able to feed some 357 patrons in 3 hours, and there were
many compliments on the meal.
To the volunteers, where will I start? Firstly to the office staff, then to Edna my adviser, to Jackie, coordinator of the main
hall and to Mavis for coordinating the pie room.
To all the volunteers for making meatballs and stuffing, peeling potatoes and carrots, cooking turkeys, potatoes & carrots.
To the carvers, servers, coffee makers, table cleaners, runners, ticket takers, dishwashers, set up and take down crew and to
all who donated potatoes, carrots, cranberry sauce, pies and money, we thank you for being so generous.
A special note to the people who cooked the extra large birds I promise I won't do that another year, but my thanks.
Thank you to all for pitching in for these large fundraisers, 287 volunteer hours were used to hold this event. Without the
help of many we would not be able to continue as we are all getting a little older.

CIRCLE DANCING
Fred Bieber
Circle dance, also known as circle dancing, is a style of
dance done in a circle (open or closed) to musical accompaniment. The dance is probably the oldest known dance
formation. Dancing in a circle is an ancient tradition common to many cultures for marking special occasions, rituals, strengthening community and encouraging togetherness. Today, it may be still used in its more meditative
form. ( Sacred Circle Dance Circle dancing) The dance
can be energetic or gentle. unlike line dancing, circle
dancers are in physical contact with each other; the connection is made by hand-to-hand, finger-to-finger or
hands-on-shoulders. Generally, the participants follow a
leader around the dance floor while holding the hand of
the dancers beside them. Today, circle dancing is prominently found in the Middle East, Eastern Europe and
Southern Europe ..A great deal more information is available on the Internet.
Circle Dancing Started Oct. 8 and will run once every
two weeks as long as there is an interest. A Centre activity fee of $1.00 applies, and you should be 55+ to attend.
KITCHEN NEWS
Sharon Peichl
Good meals will come your way all of November, so don't
forget to check out the Friday lunch offerings! Your comments and suggestions are always welcome: pass them
on to any team member or the office!
As I mentioned last month, the kitchen program will be
reviewed this year to add some new leaders and new
ideas. Some of the current team members are looking to
ease some new faces into the roles to help ensure the
program continues. Besides Friday lunches, our kitchen
turns out just a few catered events: The Pancake Breakfast in August, the Heart and Stroke Golf Tournament
dinner in August, the Fall Supper in October, the September 3 day Floor Curling lunch and suppers, as well as
goodies for the Fashion Show, and some funeral luncheon services. We have several great teams to carry the
load and not a heavy schedule over the year. All has run
smoothly due to some very dedicated volunteer organizers and helpers. Lots of helpers!
We are now looking for newer members who can offer
some leadership to take over some events, or even one
event. Step up and make an offer – there is lots of help
for the transition! Contact the office to get further information and an info date with one of our team leaders. Join
the program!

Seniors Resource Program
Lifeline
Are you living alone or with an ill spouse and
would like the comfort of knowing that help is only a
press of a button away? If so then Lifeline is just the
right thing for you. Lifeline is monitored 24 hours a
day, seven days a week. Responder’s phone numbers are programmed in the Lifeline unit and when
help is needed, you just press the button you wear
and someone from the monitoring centre will call
your responder to come and help or the ambulance
can also be dispatched if needed. For a reasonable
one time installation fee and low monthly monitoring
fee, Lifeline will give you and your family piece of
mind. If you’re interested in the Lifeline or know of
someone who might benefit from this service then
please call the office at 204-642-7297.
Congregate Meals
Books of Tickets can be purchased for a great gift.
If so, then come on out to the Congregate Meal Program at the New Harbour Lodge (122-5th Ave.) in
Gimli, New Haven Lodge (96-2nd Ave.) in Gimli or
the Congregate Meal Program at the Winnipeg
Beach Lodge (32 Centre Ave.) Meals are served
Monday through Friday at 11:30 am and the cost is
only $ 7.00 each. For such a low price you get to enjoy an entree, soup/salad, dessert, coffee or tea plus
the opportunity for socializing and meeting new people. Bring a family member, bring a friend or just
come alone. Newcomers are always welcome! For
more information on attending either meal program

GOLF WIND-UP 2014
Whoops!
Editor’s Note: I missed putting the Pics in from the Golf
Wind-up last month, promised I would fit them in this
month. Good to see the fun that was had by all despite the
crappy weather this Summer! Goes to show you can’t
keep the New Horizons group from having fun at their
activities come rain or shine.
What an amazing start to the year! We already
have 525 paid members this year so far, 98 of whom
are new to the Centre. And what a great bunch of
fresh new members! We have had a lot of fun signing up the newcomers, we try and get them into the
swing of things right away. These days, if you’re
younger, able and willing you will likely be drafted
into helping out at one function or another. We are
attempting to train up some younger volunteers to
run some of the events that take place throughout
the year. If any member has a particular skill or has
been trained in a particular trade please let the office
know and we will try and make use of it. The volunteer Income Tax Program is coming soon if you have
a head for figures and wish to help.
