The children performed beautifully and the community joined in with the evenings celebrations with gusto—our Teachers had worked well to prepare the students and also to support them as they participated in the performances. It was a delight to be able to acknowledge all our students in front of our community. As I drove home after the celebrations last night I was thinking about how fortunate our school community is when compared with a school community that my daughter, Katie, and I visited last Christmas — mostly importantly — how different. That school community was in the Sahab Syrian refugee camp in Amman, Jordan. Last night our children were dressed in clothes to match their song, the children in the refugee camp were dressed in donated clothes—anything that would fit and keep them warm. Last night we all went home to houses with kitchens, bedrooms and lounges. In Sahab they go home to one room tents with ditch toilets — in the snow. Our children could kick there shoes off and forget them—there they either had no shoes or had ill fitting often mismatched donated shoes. Our families can go to the supermarket to by food—there they have to line up and show family identity card to receive a donated bag of tinned food, rice and tea if they are lucky. Our children have classrooms in a building with air conditioners, desks and lots of materials — there the classroom is a tent with only a mat on the floor, no chairs, no desks and often no pencils or paper or books. So my challenge to all of us for this upcoming Christmas Season is simply to be appreciative and say thank you. Appreciate the gift of each other, appreciate our health and safety, appreciate the opportunities that we have because we have more than the majority of other people in the world. Say thank you to Our Lord for what we receive on a daily basis, say thank you to each other for the gift that they are and how they make our worlds great places to be. Finally a thank you to everyone in the St Augustine’s Catholic Learning Community for all that you have contributed towards making 2014 a successful and enjoyable year.
