Senior News THE AREA AGENCY ON AGING OF SOMERSET COUNTY ● DECEMBER 2014 Agency Administrator Leaving Mary Piatt-Bruner, Administrator for the Area Agency on Aging of Somerset County is leaving the Agency for a new position. It was recently announced that Mary will be the new Administrator for the BedfordSomerset MH/MR Agency. The current MH/MR Administrator, Randy Hay, will be retiring in January 2015. Mary begins her new position January 5, 2014. Mary started with the Area Agency on Aging in July 2011 after Art DiLoreto, the former Administrator, resigned his position to take the Deputy Director position of the Pennsylvania Area Agency on Aging Association known as the P4A. The new Administrator for the Area Agency on Aging has yet to be named. Under Mary’s direction and with a dedicated team of Agency employees and with a strong commitment from the Agency’s Advisory Council, the Agency realized many successes that had a direct benefit on the older adults in Somerset County. The Agency received and is disseminating additional funds in the amount of over $600,000.00 for new and increased in-home services. The Agency was awarded four (4) grants during this timeframe that benefited three Senior Centers and funded a flu shot program. The Agency also expanded the Protective Services program, re -organized Apprise, Ombudsman and the Aging Waiver programs; all of which received high marks in recent state reviews. When asked, Mary stated that it was a very difficult decision to leave the Agency, but MH/ MR is where she spent the majority of her professional career and she was looking forward to returning to that Agency. She wishes the Agency and the new Administrator the best and is confident that the good work being done at the Area Agency on Aging will continue. Stigma-Free Depression Often times, older adults think depression is inevitable with age or they are too ashamed to reach out and ask for help. Others may believe they won’t be able to afford any treatment options, or that a doctor will just try to shove the latest medication trend down their throat. I am going to share some key points about depression that will hopefully help you to think differently about depression. 1.) Depression is not a natural part of aging - people of all ages become depressed for various and significant reasons. There are special cells in your brain that are called chemical messengers. These chemical messengers can lose track of where they were supposed to go which changes how your brain works. The imbalanced chemical messengers cause depression in older adults. When depression goes unnoticed in an older adult, various problems can be the result. Increase in pain, brain functions decline, slower healing time from an illness, loss of bone density, increased use of healthcare and increased rates of suicide. The highest rate of suicide compared to any other age group is the older population. 2.) Depression is serious and is not your fault - everyone that experiences depression is experiencing it on an individualized and personal level. While it is not a natural process, it is still very common. The complications that come from being depressed, as mentioned above, can cause serious, even fatal events. 3.) What Does Depression Look Like? Feelings of sadness and decreased interest of pleasurable activities, having a hard time thinking, loss of energy, changes in appetite and sleep, feeling (Continued on page 8) December 2014 Center Activities BOSWELL AREA SENIOR CENTER Center Manager: Beth Hollis Phone: (814) 445-7772 E-mail: [email protected] 1 Hours of Operation: Monday 8:30 AM-1:30 PM 9:30 Home Protection Presentation 10:30 Gateway Health with Sandy Farmers 11:30 Lunch Available Activities: Ping-Pong Table, Pool Table, Volunteer Opportunities, Group Activities, Trivia, Brain Challengers, Exercise and Wii Games. The Health Insurance Marketplace is to help people who don’t have any health insurance. You have health insurance through Medicare. Therefore, the Marketplace will NOT have any effect on your Medicare coverage. Regardless of how you get Medicare, whether through Original Medicare or a Medicare Advantage Plan, you will still have the same benefits and security you have now. The Marketplace does not offer Medicare Supplement policies (a.k.a. Medigap) or Medicare Part D plans (prescription drugs). In addition, you can still use your current Medicare card. No new Medicare cards are being issued due to the Affordable Care Act. Q: A: Do I need to do anything with the Marketplace Plans during the annual Medicare open enrollment? Medicare’s open enrollment is not part of the Health Insurance Marketplace. It is against the law for someone who knows you have Medicare to sell you a Marketplace plan. Medicare open enrollment (October 15 to December 7) is when people with Medicare are encouraged to review their current health and prescription drug coverage, including any changes in costs, coverage and benefits that will take effect next year. If you want to change your coverage for next year, this is the time to do it. If you are satisfied with your current coverage, you do not need to do anything. For more information on Medicare open enrollment, call APPRISE at 1-800-783-7067. NOTE: The Health Insurance Marketplace open enrollment period (November 15, 2014 through February 15, 2015) overlaps with the Medicare open enrollment period. Therefore, people with Medicare who are looking to make Medicare coverage changes should make sure they are reviewing Medicare plans and not Marketplace options. Q: A: What should I do if I am contacted about signing up for a Marketplace Plan? Open enrollment periods are a time when there is a higher risk for fraudulent activities. It is against the law for someone who knows that you have Medicare to sell you a Marketplace Plan. Furthermore, Medicare will never call or ask you for your personal information nor should you share your Medicare number or other personal information with anyone who knocks on the door or contacts you uninvited to sell you a health plan. Legitimate insurance agents and brokers do not make cold calls or go door-to-door to sell plans. So you should never sign a blank form and always take time to think about your options. Senior Medicare Patrol programs are teaching people with Medicare how to detect and report fraud, and protect themselves from fraudulent activity and identify theft. Locate the Senior Medicare Patrol program in your area at www.SMPresource.org or call 800 -346-3606. Please call 814-443-2681 (toll free 800-452-0825) for free, confidential information and assistance from the APPRISE Program. APPRISE is a free, public program of the Pennsylvania Department of Aging and is funded in whole or part by a grant through the Administration for Community Living. We are here to give balanced advice. We do not sell or endorse any one insurSenior News December 2014 7 ance plan over another. (Depression, Cont’d from Pg 2) excessive guilt, thoughts of suicide, feeling worthless and agitated. 4) Depression can be treated in many ways- Yes, there are medications that will help your special brain cells work more effectively, and depending on the medication and your financial status it can be expensive. There are other ways to manage and treat depression that are much more cost effective, if not free. Getting exercise can help treat depression. Going for a daily walk or daily swim can help boost your mood and lower depression, and the meditative exercise Tai Chi has been proven extremely effective. Lots of older adults find therapy treatment to be a symbol of shame, but this is not the case. Therapy sessions are a way for you to sit down with a specialized and trained professional about how you are feeling and why. These specialized professionals work with you to find different ways to manage and cope with what is going on. If you do not like a certain suggestion, or if one does not work well for you, simply let them know and they will find something else that does. Relaxation techniques and establishing a strong support system can also help with treatment of depression. If you, or someone you know is experiencing depression, speak up and get help. Nobody should live with the feeling of depression. It can be treated.
