Tips for a Green Holiday:
• Wrap gifts in reusable materials such as cloth bags. You can make your
own from festive fabric and ribbon or use a pillow case and some fabric
paint! Then use them again every year for a new tradition
• Shop local
• Decorate with nature
• Consider usability and durability. Will it last? Is it sustainably made?
• Don’t forget to take your own bag when you go shopping
• Donate unwanted items; it will brighten someone else’s day
• Use real dishes, stemware, silverware, and cloth napkins for your
parties
• Make your own gift. Photographs, kids art projects, crafts, preserves,
baking or an original poem are great personalized choices. Gifts that
come from the heart are priceless
• Put your Christmas lights and thermostat on a timer
• Create memories, not garbage
Recycling Tips:
• Cardboard must be flattened, bundled and placed beside your bluebox
• Wrapping paper can be recycled – no foil please
• Rinse cans and bottles before they go in the blue box
• Take old unwanted electronics to the nearest disposal site for FREE
recycling
• Catering trays and oyster packaging can go into the blue box
• Styrofoam packaging can be recycled at Waste Disposal Sites!
Acceptable: all “cushion” packaging that comes with computers,
electronics, house wares etc. Not acceptable: food storage containers,
white foam packaging (meat trays, coffee cups, clam shells and packing
peanuts). Please remove all tape, plastic and paper
Compost
• A composter is the gift that keeps giving. Reduce your household waste
by 30% by putting in your kitchen scraps, grass clippings, and leaves.
In return you get free natural soil conditioning fertilizer for your garden.
• Available in the Municipal Office at 206 Toronto St. Markdale for $35
Committee of Adjustment: (two citizens)
Quasi-judicial tribunal, independent and autonomous from
Municipal Administration. Consider minor variances from the
zoning by-law, review proposed changes to legal non-conforming
uses and determine viability of Applications for Consents.
Additional information can be found on our website under the
Council tab -> Committees.
