BAPTISM CLASS
This is a reminder to parents with
infants or who anticipate a birth. Holy
Trinity offers baptism classes on the
second Monday of the month at 7:00
pm in the Incarnation Room (lower
level of Commons). The class runs
about an hour. While this course is
mandatory for all first time parents
seeking baptism for their children, it
can also be an excellent refresher.
This course addresses the theology of
this sacrament and its biblical basis.
We also discuss what happens on the
day of baptism and take parents on a
short tour of the baptistery. Parents
should contact the parish office to
register for a class. Baptism class
meets only if one or more parents
have scheduled in advance for that
particular class date so be sure to
register in advance.

HOLY TRINITY SCHOOL NOTES
OCTAVE OF CHRISTMAS
he Octave day following a Feast is
regarded as a Feast day as well and
it is given special prominence and often its own focus. In
the traditional calendar followed by the Tridentine form
of the Mass the Octave of Christmas is celebrated as
the Circumcision of the Lord. Circumcision was the
Old Testament prefigurement of baptism, by which
male offspring were brought into the protection and fold of
true religion (for girls, inclusion was by association with the
head of the household within the family). Our Lord Himself
underwent this religious ritual, just as he was baptized by Saint John,
though not out of any personal need. In the newer liturgical calendar
and form of the Mass, the Octave celebrates Mary under her title,
Mother of God. The title Mother of God is first recorded in the Gospel
of Saint Luke:

“And Mary rising up in those days, went into the hill country with
haste into a city of Judah. And she entered into the house of Zachary,
and saluted Elizabeth. And it came to pass, that when Elizabeth heard
the salutation of Mary, the infant leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth
was filled with the Holy Ghost: And she cried out with a loud voice,
and said: Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of
thy womb. And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should
come to me? For behold as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded
in my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy. And blessed art thou
that hast believed. (1:39-45)
Elizabeth could have addressed Mary by some other title, such as
Mother of the Savior, but instead she was divinely inspired to proclaim
the exalted title, Mother of my Lord, which is the equivalent of Mother
of God. Some four centuries later, in a Council of the Church held at
Ephesus, Mary was formally given the Greek title Theotokos, which
means, “She who bore God.” In the Latin tradition, this title has been
rendered as Mother of God.
It is important to understand the theological origin and significance
of this title. The Council was responding to a heresy, which sought to
separate the Humanity and Divinity of Christ, thereby splitting the
one Christ into two persons. The consequence of this would mean
that only the Son of Man was born of Mary, not the Son of God, and
that only the Son of Man died on the Cross, not the Son of God. Not
so! If God did not die for man on the Cross, humanity would remain
unredeemed. It is true to say that the Divine Nature of Christ could
not truly die, but since the Divine Nature and Human Nature are
inseparably joined in the one Person of Christ, we can say that God
died for us, in Christ. So too, while we do not claim that Mary brought
the Divine Nature of Christ into existence, it is true to say that Mary
is the Mother of the one Christ, who is fully Human and fully Divine.
Hence it is fitting and divinely revealed that we give the honor and title
to Mary the Mother of God, which Feast is celebrated on this Octave
of Christmas.

Merry Christmas and blessings in the upcoming New
Year! As a reminder, Religious Education classes will not
meet on Dec. 31. Classes resume on Wed., Jan. 7th.
Confirmation Candidates, please remember the first half
of service hours, important forms and the Saint Paper are
due when returning to class on Jan. 7th. If you are in need
of forms, you can download them on the parish website at

* Moola milk points from Kwik Trip
* Culver’s scoopie points found on the kid’s meal bags
* Coke point codes, which can be found on the inside of
Coke product boxes or plastic packaging as well as the
inside of bottle tops. The code is a 10-14 series of
numbers/letters.
* Don’t forget to designate Holy Trinity school as your
preferred school for your Target red card
The school is able to get money back for Box Tops,
Moola milk and Target red cards. The Culver points are
used to get balls for the playground. Coke points are
currently being collected to get new balls for gym class.

OUR CHRISTMAS GRATITUDE
Heartfelt thanks go out to the many parishioners who made
our churches and our sacred liturgies so special! This includes
those who decorated the churches, the choirs and cantors and
directors, those who served in the sanctuary and the ushers
serving elsewhere in the church, and the many unseen
volunteers and staff who put forth much extra effort each
Christmas.

WORLD YOUTH DAY 2016
JANUARY ARGUMENT
OF THE
MONTH
Calling all men! The next Argument event will be Tuesday
evening, January 13, starting at 6:00 pm in the St Augustine
church hall. The guys are still arguing over the title of the fight
but it will be explosive and the food will be five star. So mark
your calendars now and check the bulletin next week for more

World Youth Day 2016 (WYD16) is a pilgrimage to Krakow,
Poland, to see and share Mass with our Holy Father, Pope Francis,
in an experience with youth from around the world. The pilgrimage
is open to young adults, college students and high school students
who will have completed their sophomore year by July 2016. Join
with other WYD16 participants from throughout the Archdiocese
of St. Paul and Mpls. in a pilgrimage from July 19 - Aug. 2, 2016.
Cost is $3,700 per participant. Group leaders and individuals

ANNUAL PRAYER SERVICE
Please join us at 10:30 am on Thurs., Jan. 22 for the
Annual Prayer Service for Life with Bishop Lee Piché at the
Cathedral of Saint Paul, 239 Selby Ave. This prayer service
commemorates the millions of lives lost to abortion and the
many women and men wounded by abortion’s aftermath.

be limited due to the Red Bull Crashed Ice event. All are

MARRIAGE CONFERENCE
St Hubert’s in Chanhassen is offering a dynamic marriage
conference led by Dr. Bob Schuchts, and his team from the John
Paul II Healing Center on Fri., Jan. 16, from 6:30 - 9:30 pm and
Sat., Jan. 17, from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm. Learn practical ways to
make great marriages even better. Your marriage is the most
important part of your life – come and celebrate it! The joys of
marriage grow the closer we are to the heart of Christ. The more

TOTUS TUUS
The Totus Tuus Summer Catechetical Program is in need of
college age men and women, committed to their Catholic faith
who feel called to share it with the youth from local parishes
around the Archdiocese. The position is a temporary 2 month
commitment (5/29-7/25) which includes one week of training
and one week break for the 4th of July.

CATHOLIC WOMEN’S CONFERENCE
Women of all ages are invited to the Catholic Women’s
Conference sponsored by the Office of Evangelization and
Catechesis in partnership with WINE (Women In the New
Evangelization) on Feb. 14 from 8:00 am – 2:00 pm. (Doors open
at 7:00 am). Lunch is provided. On the beautiful Feast of Saint
Valentine, the focus of this conference will be the heart. A Heart
Drawn by Love: Set on Fire. The event features keynote speakers
Patti Schneier and Nancy Jo Sullivan, and Mass celebrated by
Bishop Andrew Cozzens. The cost is $30 per person before Jan.
