(NC) The World Health Organization has recognized antibiotic resistance as one of the most serious public health threats to the treatment of infectious diseases worldwide. Antibiotic resistance happens when bacteria change so that the antibiotics used to treat them become less effective and sometimes do not work at all. It is important for Canadians to know that if certain infections become more difficult or even impossible to treat with antibiotics, they may be sicker for longer than usual and continue to spread these infections to others. Health-care settings such as hospitals are a common place that antibiotic resistance is seen, but it’s not the only place people can be exposed to or find resistant infections. Resistant infections are spread in the community as well. All Canadians, over the course of their lifetime, are at risk of getting an antibiotic resistant infection and it is important that everyone take the time to learn more about this public health threat and what it means for you and your family. What is antibiotic resistance? Antibiotic resistance occurs when bacteria change so that the antibiotics used to treat them become less effective and sometimes do not work at all. Resistance is a defense mechanism of bacteria that allows them to live and multiply, even when an antibiotic is present. If you have an infection caused by a resistant bacteria, antibiotics may not work, as the bacteria can now resist the treatment. What causes antibiotic resistance? Some antibiotic resistance happens naturally; however, the Public Health Agency of Canada reminds Canadians that a major cause of resistance is the overuse and misuse of antibiotics including: • Using too many antibiotics to prevent and treat illness in people and in animals raised for human consumption • Taking antibiotics for an infection that is not caused by bacteria • Not taking your antibiotics as prescribed • Self-medicating or antibiotic sharing How can I protect my family from the risks of antibiotic resistance? • Talk to a health-care professional like a doctor, nurse or pharmacist. Not all infections can be or should be treated with antibiotics, so make a visit to your doctor for a complete assessment. • If you have been prescribed antibiotics, use them as directed by a health-care professional and do not share your antibiotics with anyone. If you do experience an adverse reaction or other side effects, talk to a health-care professional about your options. Return any unused medicine to the pharmacy. • Cleaning your hands frequently is one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of getting sick in the first place. Clean your hands often with soap and water. If this is not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub. More information about antibiotic resistance is available at www. canada.ca/antibiotics How to win the battle with cold and flu (NC) Despite our best efforts to stay healthy during the winter, we can’t always get through the cold and flu season without a nasty bout of runny nose, ceaseless coughing, fever, and a pounding headache. If you suffer from some of these symptoms, it’s quite possible a nasty bug snuck past your best defenses. The Canadian Health Food Association (CHFA) has some simple suggestions to minimize all the aches and pains and get you back to feeling healthy sooner: Volume 4 Issue 12 – Dec. 17 – Jan. 22, 2015 Zinc Taking a zinc supplement is a great way to speed up recovery from a cold. This essential nutrient has been shown to prevent rhinovirus (the most common cause of a cold) from reproducing, stopping the affliction in its tracks. For best results, and even to help prevent catching a cold at all, try including a zinc supplement as part of your regular regime. Vitamin C This nutrient, readily available in many foods, helps to prevent immune deficiencies so getting enough throughout the year is an effective preventative measure. Consuming plenty of vitamin C-rich foods like bell peppers, dark leafy greens and citrus fruits is an important way to get your daily recommended dose. Higher concentrations of vitamin C, found in natural supplements, can also help to minimize the duration of a cold that has already afflicted you. Echinacea This helpful herb comes in many forms, including teas, juices, For Advertising Information please call: 905.420.4123 or 416.779.2523 tinctures, and a wide variety of solid tablets. Time is of the essence however. It is important to begin using echinacea as soon as cold or flu symptoms appear. There are many natural ways to stay healthy and happy throughout the winter and all year long. Additional tips about natural health are available online at chfa.ca and speak to your health care provider about the products and dosages that are right for you. Page 5 Online at: The Toronto East RETAIL PAGES WHERE DO MY skates GO? Relax and read food labeling for healthier eating (NC) Finding better-for-you food choices is easier than you might think. Canada’s food and beverage manufacturers say they have never been more committed to producing new, safe, high- quality and nutritious foods for us to enjoy. A recent study conducted by the association, Food & Consumer Products of Canada (FCPC), found that manufacturers have introduced 750 better-for-you options since 2011, building on the 1,280 products reported in 2011. That’s almost 2,000 food and beverage products available in your favourite store that are better for your health. What does this mean for the consumer? As you shop for the ingredients needed to make a great meal for family and friends, you now have many more choices aimed at better nutrition. In fact, according to the survey, companies have introduced 68 per cent more products with reduced sodium, and have also increased their reduced-calorie options by 39 per cent, since 2011 So how do you know if you’re making the best choices for you and your SEARCH family? Start with the Nutrition Facts table printed on every packaged food product, in every store across the country. It’s the simplest way to learn if a product has a little or a lot of a nutrient. You can use the label to compare products and look for the nutrients most important to you, like sodium, fats, fibre and calories. Canada’s food and beverage manufacturers say they are committed to helping Canadians lead more active and healthy lives. This includes producing new, innovative products (in addition to those you’ve enjoyed for generations), investing in community health and wellness programs, and helping people to improve their nutrition literacy. Maisie Vanriel, FCPC’s registered dietitian and vice president of Scientific & Regulatory Affairs, points out that the companies are doing this because it’s what consumers want and expect: more choices and better choices. The truth, however, may surprise you. Here are three things to know about this sweet ingredient, according to registered dietitian, Lisa Rutledge of DebunkingDietitian.ca: Truth: Sugar is not another word for obesity As most health professionals point out, if sugar is consumed in moderation, there is nothing bad about it. It is not the sole cause of obesity, which is a complex disease with many factors. Weight gain, in the vast majority of cases, is a result of an imbalance between energy intake from all foods and beverages, and energy output from physical activity. Truth: All sugars are equal Just as completely cutting sugar out of the diet is not a useful tactic, considering one form of sugar as better than the rest is not scientifically substantiated either. No matter what type of sugar you consume, there is no evidence that humans store those calories differently. Nor is there evidence that added sugars are stored differently than naturallyoccurring sugars. Truth: Sugar is part of a balanced diet Sugar can be part of a balanced diet, as it’s a source of energy for the brain and working muscles. Also, allowing yourself to have your favourites from time to time can actually help you stay on track with your diet. For that reason, Rutledge often recommends her clients enjoy their favourites, like chocolate or soda pop, in moderation. for weight management. The zerocalorie ingredient can safely reduce or replace calories in foods and beverages, while maintaining the taste for those who enjoy a little sweetness. For those with diabetes, it allows for greater flexibility in budgeting total carbohydrate intake, and provides a sweet option that won’t affect blood sugar levels. It is a safe ingredient Leading authorities, like Health Canada, agree that aspartame and other low- and no-calorie sweeteners are safe. Last year, the European Food Safety Authority performed the most comprehensive analysis of studies on aspartame to date and reaffirmed that it is safe for consumption. It is popular The ingredient is found in more than 6,000 products around the world, including soft drinks, chewing gum, yogurt and frozen treats. Aspartame is consumed by more than 200 million people around the world.
