BEVERLEY BLARNEY www.beverleywa.com Edition 362 December 2014 No Charge To our readers, we wish you all a very Merry Christmas and safe and happy New Year. Beverley Blarney, Edition 362 – December 2014 1 President Report December 2014 Christmas Light Competition Residents and Businesses within the town boundary – don’t forget to have your Christmas lights up by Friday 12th December and be a part of the Beverley Christmas Light Competition. Entry is free, the prizes are great and winning displays will be announced during the Community Christmas Concert at the Railway Station on 20th December. Annual Electors Meeting Council recently held its Annual Electors Meeting, a statutory requirement to be held within 56 days after the Local Government accepts the annual report for the previous financial year. Beverley has held this in November, December, January and February over the years and each of those months has some unsuitability for various electors regarding attendance. The Annual Report is always available to view following Councils adoption, either from the Shire office or the beverley.wa.gov.au website. Thank you to attendees at this year’s meeting. Railway Station Structural Problems The Shire has received a report citing structural problems with the Beverley Railway Station building. The Shire’s insurers have deemed that the premises not be used until rectified. This is devastating news for Beverley Station Arts and our community as the transformational work that has gone into developing the Railway Station Cultural Precinct is well recognized. A more comprehensive report is now required to explore the extent of the problem, what remediation is needed, and the likely cost in order to determine how this situation can be addressed. Main Street Redevelopment and a Tourism Planning Framework with more information to follow on these in due course. This unfortunate circumstance reinforces the need for an external funding system to assist Local Government with Rural and Regional heritage properties listed on the State Heritage Register which are in effect part of the heritage fabric of our State, but for which rate payers and residents are bearing a burden for maintenance and upkeep. It is an issue I have been raising in various forums over the last 18 months to highlight the problem, most recently when the CEO and I met with the Hon. Mia Davies MLA. BBP Audit As previously reported Beverley, Brookton and Pingelly formed an alliance to collaboratively progress sustainable Aged Care Planning, Services and Support within and between our communities. BBP has engaged Verso Consulting to undertake an infrastructure, age friendliness, services and facilities audit in each of the three Shires, which is currently underway, to inform planning for the current and future needs of our communities. Road Works Programme Our road crew has been busy preparing for bituminizing, with work recently completed on the Westdale Road. Next will be a 3.4km section of the York Williams Road which is due for sealing before the end of the year. Upcoming Projects – Your Feedback Welcomed In 2014 Council has been investigating various projects which could potentially provide long term benefit for our community on the proviso that funding can be accessed to assist with implementation should they proceed. Concept plans will be available for viewing and for your feedback, the first being for a proposed Multipurpose Community Centre. This project has been articulated out of findings from a feasibility study commissioned by the Community Resource Centre in 2012, from which results were presented at a community workshop in 2013 and subsequently received by Council earlier this year. A Business Case Plan and amended concept plan are now available for viewing at the Shire Office. The other projects relate to Street Water Harvesting, Retirees Morning Tea Thank you to those attending the Retirees Morning Tea at which there was delicious food, good company and great entertainment! Platform Theatre Events Congratulations to the Beverley Station Arts and their helpers for recently hosting the very popular Australian Beatles and Blues Brothers Review at the Platform Theatre. This was a terrific show and great night out. Next on the calendar is a Free Community Christmas Concert so lock Saturday 20th December into your diary for another great night out with family and friends. Christmas and New Year Best wishes for Christmas and New Year. Enjoy, be patient on the roads, and take care. COUNCIL MEETINGS REMINDER The December Ordinary Council Meeting will be held on Tuesday 16 December 2014 at 2.00pm There will be NO Council Meeting in January 2015 S P Gollan Chief Executive Officer PROPOSAL TO COMMENCE A MAJOR TRADING UNDERTAKING A Business Plan for the Shire of Beverley proposal to develop a Multipurpose Community Centre at the corner of Vincent and Dawson Streets, (Lot 3 and Lot 57 Vincent Street, Lot 58 Dawson Street) Beverley, is available for public inspection at the Council Offices, 136 Vincent Street, Beverley between the hours of 8.30am and 4.00 pm. Members of the public are invited to make submissions in relation to the plan. Submissions about the proposed plan should be made to the Chief Executive Officer by Friday 16 January 2015. S P GOLLAN CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER SHIRE OF BEVERLEY PO BOX 20, BEVERLEY WA 6304 www.beverleywa.com Beverley Blarney, Edition 362 – December 2014 3 SHIRE OF BEVERLEY PUBLIC NOTICE The Shire of Beverley wishes to advise that the Beverley Community building formerly known as the Child Health Clinic, located at 141 Vincent Street, Beverley will be removed in January 2015. In November 2011 the Shire of Beverley Asset Management Plan indicated that the Child Health Clinic had a condition rating of 4 (being fair to minus) and 0-19% remaining of its estimated working life. In 2012 severe cracking to walls became evident and this was further investigated with a structural engineers report. In July 2013 the Shire was advised that the extent of work required to repair the Child Health Clinic may be uneconomical given that it did not comply with Building Code requirements suitable for general community use. Further quotes were obtained stating that repairs would cost in the vicinity of $330,000.00 and to rebuild a similar building would cost $625,000.00. In September 2013 Council resolved not to repair the building. Council has now found a new location for the Beverley Hospital Auxiliary to run the Op Shop from, being the front of the Town Hall, due to reopen for business in February 2015. As the former Child Health Clinic building is structurally unsound it will be removed in the interest of public safety and liability in January 2015. The site will be grassed and kept tidy with as many existing trees and plants to remain as possible. SP Gollan Chief Executive Officer - Shire of Beverley SHIRE OF BEVERLEY PUBLIC NOTICE Submissions are being called for the removal of the building formerly known as the Child Health Clinic located at 141 Vincent Street, Beverley. For submissions terms and conditions or to make an appointment to view the building between 1 - 12 December, please contact the Shire Office, 9646 1200. All submissions must be received by 4.00pm Friday 19 December 2014. No submission will necessarily be accepted. We’re moving into the difficult time of the year with our gardens and mulching, feeding and nursing along any vegetables is the way to go. The more mulch the less water needed. If you haven’t eaten all your artichokes the lovely big purple flowers will be here soon, if not already. One of our members has a great crop of basil and it makes beautiful pesto so is a great addition to the garden. Your tomatoes may need to be protected from the sun , and remember to dig up the daffodil and tulip bulbs as they won’t get through the summer. Continue dead heading roses and feed them too. Santa will be arriving at 6pm Named presents to be in by 5pm To be followed by an evening meal of various meats on the spit, salads and sweets. We are very supportive of the need for an alternative venue for the weekly group gathering but it would appear that the CWA rooms would not be a suitable situation. The carpets have been commercially cleaned and the lawns mown so hopefully we will have the place looking great for the Christmas season. Our December meeting is to be on Thursday 11th December at 10.00am with morning tea and usual meeting followed by lunch at the Red Vault Restaurant. Husbands/partners are invited to join us for this occasion. Please bring a gift to the value of $10.00 for the gift exchange - please mark if suitable for a Lady or a Gent. This will be our last meeting before going into summer recess until the AGM which is to be held at the CWA Centre on Thursday 12th February, 2015. In 2015, CWA in Beverley will be celebrating 90 years of service to the Beverley Community. The focus for this year was to improve our quilting skills and expand our knowledge in other areas such as material dyeing, free motion quilting and become familiar with the accu quilt machine. We went to a workshop in Bassendean and a very skilled lady exposed us to a variety of dyeing which was very interesting. We all came home with various samples of what we produced that day. On a separate weekend we had a retreat at someone's house from the group and did a convergence with the dyed material. Some of our ladies extended their knowledge regarding dyeing and did some lino tile dyeing with the artist in residence in Beverley. They all had a great day and will bring their skills back to the group. We also went to a workshop in Perth to enhance our skills on the big quilting frame. I think we all got a lot out of it and can hopefully put it in practise with our own quilting frame. We had a lovely morning tea with the HACC ladies and participated in our yearly friendship day at Parkerville. This was very pleasing and we welcomed our newest member Glenys Petchell. There were only a couple of apologies. We have in our collection, at the museum two tools both the same which we weren’t certain what they were for. We had been told that they were for pulling out nails. Member Di Smith decided to do some research and come up with an answer. The tool is called an ‘Iron Hand’ now known as a pipe wrench. Invented by Johan Peter Johansson 1853-1943. He was one of the foremost inventors in Sweden. He had his own business at one stage but transferred it to his son so that he could concentrate on his inventions, he had 118 patents in his life time. Thanks very much Di and well done. In our possession at the moment we have 6 books. The title of these books is “A Farming Family” - The Fleay’s of Western Australia, written by Jennifer Gardner. These books are for sale at $25 each, can be purchased from The Dead Finish. Our Christmas function is a morning tea, this will be held at the Red Vault Restaurant on Wednesday 10 December at 10.00am. We hope to see as many members as possible for this social occasion. Next and final meeting before we go into recess will be held on Wednesday 08 December at 2.00pm at the Dead Finish Museum. This meeting will be followed by the cover-up. The structural engineer’s report states that the building’s stability is compromised by the extent of cracking of walls and there is a risk of vertical failure of one wall. Consequently, this past month has been a busy one for BSA committee as we had to relocate the artists-in- residence. As we have been able to rent a Shire house in Dawson Street, we moved all furniture from the station residence last week in readiness for our current artist Charlotte O’Shea. However, the artist prior, Jill Ansell, had to be housed at the Beverley B&B and we thank them wholeheartedly for their reduced tariff. Our committee is devastated to say the least as all aspects of arts centre had reached such great momentum and it now……well it feels like a backward step. Art workshops, Choir practice and BSA meetings have this month been held in the performers’ Green Room alongside the Platform Theatre stage, and will continue so till other arrangements can be made. The question of just how long it will take to remedy the structural damage to the Station is unknown, and being extremely costly, we envisage fundraising to be on the agenda in the foreseeable future. Maybe we can start a barometer fund similar to the airstrip lighting project – uncanny that we should donate $1000 to the airstrip little knowing what lay around the corner for the Station! Please help to SAVE OUR STATION. BSA Annual General Meeting The AGM for members and friends of Beverley Station Arts was held on Friday 31 October at the Station Gallery. From the BSA members present a full committee was elected. Committee members to serve their second year term in 2014/15: Marylou Hutchinson (Vice Chairman and Artist-in-Residence Coordinator, Sarah Miller (Secretary), Pauline Knight (Treasurer), Kathryn McLean (Exhibition Secretary), Sandy Shaw, Penny Burns, Tracey Fleay. Committee Members to serve their two year term as from now: Jenny Broun (Chairman), Amanda McLean Exhibition Treasurer, Joanne Strange, Leita Barrett-Lennard, Valda Morton, John Ives Artist-in-Residence Jill Ansell was kept busy during her short stay with many visitors visiting to view both her own art which included a marvelous portrait of her uncle, Graeme Hobbs, and the John Ainsworth retrospective exhibition. It is worth noting that so many of our artists intend returning for another residency, and leave behind wonderful comments in the visitor’s book such as this from Jill: “A very short, but social and enjoyable stay. This building (and the people associated with it) is a gem and I hope the “necessary” repairs are cheap and fast so that you can carry on this excellent Artist-in-Residence programme. I want to come back and stay here again – for longer next time. Many thanks to the lovely committee members – this town is blessed to have you all – and thanks to the local people who dropped past to look and chat. It was good to be here at the same time as John Ainsworth’s memorial retrospective was on. He was an excellent watercolour artist and it was a pleasure to share the space with him and talk to visitors about his work.” Jill in the Station Gallery studio with her portrait of Graeme Hobbs. The Station Gallery resplendent with John Ainsworth paintings. Charlotte O’Shea on her return from Scotland was quick to make contact and start her residency a few days after Jill left. Charlotte’s residency is of a different kind as she is being paid for her time, mainly by Beverley Station Arts, but also by the CRC and the Shire, to work with the youth of the town. 20 Beverley Blarney, Edition 362 – December 2014 www.beverleywa.com John Ainsworth – A Tribute and Exhibition The opening of the John Ainsworth retrospective exhibition was well attended with people from as far a fields as Mundaring, Dowerin, and from Perth were John’s three daughters who spoke informally of their father’s work. It was a lovely gathering with four paintings being sold. Unfortunately the exhibition was to remain open until December 21 but has had to conclude early due to the closure of the Station building. If anyone is wanting to purchase a painting could they now contact Carolyn, one of John’s daughters, on 0488 203 630. Donation of Paintings On November 6 Shire President Dee Ridgway, Kathryn McLean, Marylou Hutchinson and I visited Mrs Frances Creasy at her home in Peppermint Grove following an invitation to select artworks from her collection for the Beverley Shire collection at the Station Gallery. We came home with two largish and two small paintings, all of the Dale where Mrs Creasy spent her former years. Marylou Hutchinson, Jenny Broun, Patsy Millet, Frances Creasy and Dee Ridgway with donated artworks. Colin Croft, Tracey Fleay and Maxine during the visit to Croft’s Station And whilst on the subject of the Gallery, an impromptu visit to the Station was made by Colin Croft and his sister Maxine to view the two paintings by their mother Ruth Croft. One painting was acquired by Shire when it won an award in 1968, and the other was donated by the family at the opening of the Station Gallery in 2006. Ruth was the instigator of the Gallery back in 1967 when she and her husband, who was the traffic inspector, were living in Beverley. Both Colin and Maxine have fond memories of the town. Youth Workshops A series of after FREE after school and weekend workshops suitable for youth up to 17 years (inclusive) are being held by artist Charlotte O’Shea during her stay in November. The programme involves recycling local materials to construct 3D art which are being displayed in shop fronts – namely U Beauty Country. Many people put off seeking help about their health in the lead up to Christmas. Taking time in the lead up to Christmas to see your doctor about possible signs/symptoms of cancer is an important message of the Cancer Council WA’s Find Cancer Early campaign. “The lead up to Christmas gets pretty hectic and it’s easy to forget about looking after yourself. If you know something isn’t right we encourage you to see your doctor well before - it’s the best present you can give yourself”, said Karen Hansen, Regional Education Officer for the Wheatbelt. During the development of the Find Cancer Early campaign, researchers spoke to a number of people from regional WA with cancer. Christmas was a common reason why people postponed getting help. “We were over-whelmed by the number of people who spoke about having symptoms before Christmas, but because they were so busy they put off seeing their doctor,” said Professor Jon Emery, GP and lead researcher at the University of Western Australia. “But because of the Christmas shut down, when they were ready to see someone there were big delays that pushed things back even further.” Evidence shows that delaying seeing the doctor for just 5 weeks can have a big impact on patient outcomes, which is why the campaign’s message ’the earlier cancer is found, the greater the chance of successful treatment’ is so important. “Recognising symptoms early is important, so we want to encourage people to put themselves first. Find Cancer Early is all about helping people to recognise symptoms early and giving strategies to overcome excuses or barriers to seeking help” said Karen Hansen, Regional Education Officer for the Wheatbelt. If you are over 40 and have coughed up blood or had blood in your pee once off tell your doctor. You should also tell your doctor if you have had any of these symptoms for more than 4 weeks: blood in your poo; problems peeing; looser poo (diarrhoea); unexplained weight loss; an unusual pain, lump or swelling anywhere in your body; becoming more short of breath; or a persistent cough. Having these symptoms doesn’t mean you have cancer – often they turn out to be something less serious, but it’s important to tell your doctor. More information is available at: www.findcancerearly.com.au. Find Cancer Early is an initiative of The University of Western Australia and Cancer Council WA investigating ways to improve cancer outcomes for people in regional Western Australia. www.beverleywa.com Beverley Blarney, Edition 362 – December 2014 29 135 Vincent Street BEVERLEY P: 9646 1142 Your Beverley Nursery Na ve seedlings for revegeta on, bush foods and planta ons. TREATING A SNAKE BITE There have been quite a number of snake bites reported in Western Australia during the spring months and the summer months are ahead of us, so here is a reminder of what to do if you or someone you know is bitten by a snake. Managing a snake bite: Don’t panic. Call/send for help. Rest and reassure the patient. Apply a broad pressure bandage over the bite site as soon as possible. Apply a pressure immobilisation bandage – start just above the fingers or toes, and move upwards on the limb as far as can be reached. (include the snakebite.) Apply tightly without stopping blood supply to the limb. Splint the bandaged limb. Ensure the patient does not move. Write down the time of the bite and when the bandage was applied. Stay with the patient. Check circulation in fingers or toes. DO NOT wash venom off the skin. DO NOT cut the bitten area. DO NOT try to suck venom out of the wound. DO NOT use a tourniquet. DO NOT try to catch the snake. DO YOU KNOW WHAT TO DO IN AN EMERGENCY? If you have a medical emergency and need an ambulance, you should always ring 000. Do not ring the hospital, or a local ambulance officer you know for assistance as this will only slow down the process of getting you the help you need. When you ring 000, they will ask you the relevant questions to get the ambulance to you in the quickest time possible. The questions they ask you are necessary and assist the ambulance officers to best help you. Remember – stay calm and ring 000 in an emergency. FIRST AID KITS Stuck for Christmas gift ideas? Why not consider giving a St John Ambulance First Aid Kit! They are practical in the home and in the car, as we all have little medical emergencies where a First Aid Kit is all that’s needed. Reward for Effort essential for you and your team’s wellbeing December is a good time to reflect on the past year and to start planning for 2015. After a busy period, like harvest or simply as an “annual weighing” up before Christmas, conducting a review with ourselves and/or our team is good for our wellbeing. We need to acknowledge, value and reward ourselves individually and our team’s work efforts. As an owner/operator of a small business or as someone who is part of a team we all expect “A fair day’s pay for a fair day’s work”. It is essential we apply this principle to both ourselves and our team. There is a role both for the employer and employee in this deliberation. Employee issues like work attendance, morale, performance and productivity are both affected by how we communicate with our team and how we value their efforts. This reward for effort review process can have a positive effect on our own wellbeing as an employer and that of our team. Quite often in the workplace there is that expectation that in the busy times (we all have them) we put extra time in. We need then to be able to jump off the treadmill and at some point balance up and take time off. One of the positives of the good FIFO rosters is that this is factored in in the roster planning. On the other hand there are many other workplaces and owner operated businesses that don’t factor this in. Commitment, work ethic, and motivation and a whole lot of other wellbeing factors help define us as individuals and assists us to achieve getting the right life work balance. Planning for Reward for Effort can come in many ways. Some examples of these are: Recognition/acknowledgement – positive affirmation, specific praise; Team time (socialising, professional development etc.); Extra holidays – Time off in lieu; Other Bonus (can be anything); Increase in salary. Isolation is often the enemy of sound mental wellbeing. Many of us working in regional WA quite often work in isolation and/or isolated environments. It is really important to have strategies that counter balances this issue and we need to ensure we address them in the reward for effort review. Informal and spontaneous interaction is one important tool that can help counteract isolation. Our individual and our team’s wellbeing is important, act on it! Do our own and our team review of reward for effort annually – it is good for everyone’s wellbeing. Value ourselves and our team’s efforts for the year. Extremely important in owner operated small business. Even in tough times don’t put off this review. An annual review is a great way to address issues, create a plan for the new year, wind down, and get the holiday season off and running on a positive note. On behalf of the RMHI team I would like to wish all our readers all the best for Christmas and the New Year. Locally Based at West Kokeby Phone Ray 0428 936 621 or 08 9646 4136 www.beverleywa.com THE BLUE LINE Beverley Police Station 57 Hunt Road, Beverley WA 6304 Well, while Ian is away I have the opportunity to write and address the readership of the Blarney. I know Ian does spend the time and delivers a well versed community policing message to the readers but this month my best will have to suffice. I have thought of many things that I could include and discuss. However, when I sit down to write it those concepts escape me, but I will write a concise message on community and road policing. During my short but interesting time here, several people have reported incidents to me two or three days after the occurrence or initial discovery of a suspected offence. I have heard “I didn’t think it was worth calling about…”, “I didn’t want to bother you.” “I don’t like speaking to Northam etc.” This is not the attitude I would encourage you to have in relation to contacting the Police. When you see suspicious behaviour, what you believe to be criminal behaviour and breaches under the road traffic act, please contact us. Even if you don’t get to speak with us directly your message will get to us. We will triage your situation/ information accordingly. Your call may help us gather an intelligence picture or assist us in on going inquiries in the fight against crime and anti-social behaviour. Help me, help you. You may choose to contact us on 9646 3333 (Beverley Police Station) or 131 444 (Police Assistance Centre) for general inquires or 1800 333 000 (for Crimestoppers) or 000 (life threatening emergencies). Not many organisations can choose to boast that many phone numbers! The people you speak to will be in touch with us. We have access to suspicious activity forms and I will distribute these. They will assist you in gathering all the information you need if you wish to report suspicious activity or persons to the Police. I have seen an instance of 3 pages of “Registration plates” being handed to a Police Officer. The vehicles had been frequenting an address to purchase drugs. Further inquiries were undertaken and Police executed a search warrant and arrested 2 persons for the sell and supply of cannabis. It is obvious that this action would not have been undertaken without information received from a diligent member of the public willing to step forward. Let’s work together on some jobs! So, if you see something suspicious or let’s say “hoon” behaviour please contact us. We will act on the information we receive. So far so good. The next point, road safety. You may have noticed a Police sedan travelling around Beverley in November. That was a “Concept Car” equipped with new road policing technology. Inside this vehicle is an on-board computers, cameras, speed detection equipment and an ANPR camera (Automatic Number Plate Recognition). We had access to the vehicle for six days. The ANPR automatically reads the number plate on your vehicle and checks your registration is valid and your licence details. It alerts us to any unpaid registrations, suspended or disqualified drivers (almost instantly). Here is the scary part. In six days of operation in the Beverley sub-district – known to the community as the Shire of Beverley. There were two drivers driving with no valid licence and one contrary to extraordinary plates. These vehicles were seized for one month and are facing court appearances. 25 speeding infringements were issued and 2 “others”. This is a head scratcher. One of those infringements was issued to a person who was travelling 45km/h over the posted speed limit, in a 110km/h zone. That is right folks 155km/h. This vehicle will be seen again in Beverley. I warn people knowingly (or even unknowingly) driving with no licence (the responsibility is on you to ensure you license is current). I will seize your vehicle, work vehicle or otherwise. Please ensure you details are correct, please do this on the Department of Transport website. One more point… There was a Beverley Police Legacy Golf Day a few weeks ago and I would personally like to thank all those people who participated, planned, organised and offered support in all forms. I have a big list of people I will write and thank (you know who you are). But this is my opportunity to do so in a public forum. I would also like to thank the businesses who were kind enough to offer anything they could. It is appreciated. Well, until next time. Ian, Nick and (Acting Sergeant Jamie UNCLE). www.beverleywa.com Beverley Blarney, Edition 362 – December 2014 35 Beverley Paralegal Community Information Services (BCS) The following should be treated as information only and not as advice. The matter relates to a case that was brought to my notice, therefore for further clarification and information I contacted the Northam Police Station, by phone. 1. When plain clothed detectives, make an arrest, they would always provide their names and other identity and the nature of the suspected charge leading to the arrest warrant. It also applies to uniformed officers. They would follow due police procedure, including their duty of care to the arrested person. 2. When the person in question (arrested person), is being cared for OR is caring for someone else e.g. spouse, partner or child, and most importantly when disabilities and medications are an issue. When babies and children are being cared for by the arrested person and this, is made aware to the arresting officers, who, as part of their Duty of Care will contact Crisis Care / Social Worker to assist the family in this crisis situation/matter. 3. My comments: Others who can help: The authorised person can ask the arresting officers, as to: what the charges are and where are they taking the arrested person. Also contact Legal Aid right for legal advice. You can also contact crisis care to discuss the issue. Medical and Help Line on matter: 24 hour info line. For further info on warrants contact the local or Northam Police. Other information Firearms Act: re application for gun cabinets, applicants are required to send photos duly certified by a JP or other qualified person. Immigration: follow up or chase up matters pending and store documents i.e. all paperwork in a safe place. E.g. What can happen: a person born overseas, misplaced the Citizenship Certificate issued 20 years ago, also holds an Australian Passport also over 20 years. A copy can not be issued, and one has to re-apply for Australian Citizenship, (new application with proof of entry into Australia, what year, what date, what flight number and so on). This case is very strange but never the less true. Crowd funding: TV reports tell us those who are struggling to keep up paying for chronic medical bills for family and pets can now search under crowd funding on the internet for procedures to follow to get help. Evidence shown on TV help with operations costs of children and pets over $30,000 raised. Mal G Roberts BRIDGE ‐ Card Game If you would like to come along and enjoy a game of bridge. We welcome all new members to join us. WHEN: Mondays TIME: 1.00pm WHERE: CWA Hall 36 Beverley Blarney, Edition 362 – December 2014 www.beverleywa.com CRANA Aboriginal Corporation Inc. TV reporting informs us that there have been cuts to many, indigenous programs such as :health, legal services, education, juvenile & youth, housing prisoners support and so the list goes on. Currently in some major tourist towns, TV shows us that, due to all these drastic financial cuts, the number of homeless people (both indigenous and non indigenous) are increasing and these homeless people are now sleeping in bushes, under trees and on the streets. The reason for this is obvious, some have lost their jobs, others have no jobs, they have no home to go to and there is no rental accommodation available. TV reporting: What I have just stated has also been reported by National TV Media, in spite of this grim pictures, one would not believe what else the TV stations have reported. Further withdrawal of funding: The Federal Government has withdrawn funding for 150 indigenous remote communities. The Premier of WA has told the media, as this be the case, the WA Government, can not afford to fund these communities and they (all 150) will now have to close down. What this means in real terms, is this, all services such as schools, electricity, water will be cut off/ lost. Teachers, health workers and all other Government staff will be removed or sacked. The most important questions; which, may I add, no one has bothered to answer is ‘What happens to all the community residents: the men, women, children and even babies, where will they all go? Devastating impact: What indigenous elders and others learned and respected members of the general community is that these families will be thrown out from their own land. They will loose this strong connection/ bond to their mother earth, they will also lose their culture, their traditional beliefs and the sacred sites of their ancestors and the spirits, will all be taken away from them. My final citation from TV reports: Chief Justice Wayne Martin has said “Instead of the Government cutting funds for indigenous people, they should be increased”. Good news: iron ore magnate: Andrew Forrest and Premier Colin Barnett, (this relates to (we gather, a situations up North) an employment agreement). Where in Andrew Forrest gives a written undertaking that he will employ indigenous persons released from prison, i.e. more or less, guaranteed employment. Our trip began at the Northam train station around 8am. We took a 5 hour long train ride to the historic town of Kalgoorlie and from there we took buses to the accommodating Goldfields Camp School. Mrs Thomas, Mrs Shaw, Mr Ashworth, Mrs Kilpatrick and Dad accompanied us on our adventure. We spent the first day in Kalgoorlie setting up our dorms and ensuring we were prepared for any tasks coming our way. After setting up our sleeping areas we set out to the Super Pit lookout. It was a well presented tourist attraction that had nearly all class members gasping in awe. Our time at the Super Pit seemed to go surprisingly fast and before we knew it we were back at the camp school enjoying our marvellously prepared dinners. To conclude the evening, a quiz night was held. It was a test of our general knowledge and understanding of the world. With the prize being chocolates we were all determined to win the ultimate award. To kick-start our day we were greeted with a delicious breakfast. We took the bus out to the Kalgoorlie town hall where we met our tour guide. The town hall was a beautiful example of historic artefacts and furnishings. The high ceiling and ornate walls were awe inspiring. We also viewed the Paddy Hannan memorial statue. We then headed out with our next tour guide called Vic. He was an amazing man with firsthand information and unbelievable knowledge on the historic town of Coolgardie. We arrived at the Visitor Centre and then swiftly made a move to the Warden’s house. It was a lovely old style cottage with stone walls and decorative wooden trimmings. We later went to the Coolgardie cemetery where we saw Earnest Giles’ burial site. We also saw the Warden’s wife’s grave. Afterwards we met back at the Visitor Centre where we ventured through the numerous rooms and explored the history of the town. Later that evening we headed out to the Oasis. The Oasis is the Kalgoorlie recreation centre. It was marvellously presented and well equipped. They had netball and basketball courts, a football field, an indoor pool with a waterslide and a gym. We spent a couple of hours at the pool. There was an inflatable obstacle course and many students were able to complete the course; some however, not mentioning any names, merely made it to the second obstacle. We were later transported back to the Goldfields Camp School, where an array of delicious supper was set up for us to enjoy. On the morning of the third day, we set out on an adventure to find gold. A few of us had pessimistic views on our luck; however we were extremely successful. Nearly every student had found a piece of gold for themselves. After crushing the quartz, we tipped the minerals into a pan and used water to pan for the precious metal. In the afternoon we travelled to the Super Pit for a guided tour. We saw drill and blast teams and many trucks. The Super Pit uses 40 Cat 793 haul trucks which carry 225 tonnes every load. Each truck carries around a golf ball amount of gold. It was an amazing experience. When we returned home we were greeted with professional hobbyists. Their talent was line dancing. We heard a few familiar songs and learned the steps www.beverleywa.com fairly quickly. At the end of the tutorial our dancing teachers gave us a snippet of what it should look like. It was a fabulous presentation and some of us perfected it extremely well. The last day on camp was jam packed, we visited many sites including the Loop Line Museum, Mt Charlotte, the RFDS, the Weather Bureau and we started our day with a delicious bush breakfast with Sharon. At the end of the day we took place in a water fight, and then we had our skit night. We had some hilarious presentations and fabulous actors. On Friday we woke up at 5am and set off to the train station. Unfortunately our transport was delayed by a few hours due to a few technical issues. As always we made the most of our unfortunate situation and headed out to the nearest skate park. A group of year sevens made a short clip whilst there. It was well designed and produced. The majority of the children played on the skate park and then we decided to move on to the next park. On reaching the next park we noticed a few children had split their pants on the skate park. At Hammond Park we played football and cricket. There was a talking cockatoo and kangaroos and emus dozing about. We then ventured back to the train station and boarded our train; we were finally on our way back home. In my opinion it was probably a good thing that we didn’t go on the early train. When we arrived home all students were extremely tired. We dawdled off the train to awaiting parents. It was an amazing experience. Year 6/7 Camp a Week we will Never Forget. Operation Christmas Child The Beverley DHS student councillors had the opportunity to take 25 boxes of donated goodies down to the Samaritan warehouse and assist with the packing and processing of shoeboxes destined for children less fortunate. Each box contains something to love, something for school, something to wear, something for play, something for hygiene and the very important library bag in which to keep their precious gifts. A special thank you to Colleen Sleer for sewing the library bags for our boxes and to everyone www.beverleywa.com who donated, no matter how small. Cricket What a day of fantastic sportsmanship! Six teams of boys and girls participated in a T20 cricket competition. Not only were we successful on the field, our sideline dancing skills were rewarded and we had a number of top performers in the catching competition. Science IQ The Year 5 & 6 extension group has been participating in the ScienceIQ online quiz each term. In groups of 3-4, they are required to research and answer a range of science questions within a one-hour time limit. The Leeuwin Galleon's logbook has never been recovered, so unfortunately very little is known about the voyage, including the name of the Captain. Interestingly, Dutch East India Company letters indicate that the Leeuwin’s voyage from Texel in the Netherlands to Batavia (now Jakarta) took more than a year, whereas other vessels made the same voyage in less than four months. This suggests that poor navigation may have been responsible for the Leeuwin’s appearance at Australia’s coast. Water quantity, volume and quality will need to be closely monitored to ensure that stock do not go thirsty. It is also important to make arrangements early for a caretaker to look after stock if you are going on holidays. Stock need regular monitoring. Correct identification can assist in the return of your animals should they decide to go ‘on holiday’ too while you are away! Protect your valuable top soil. If you are starting to get bare patches on your property you may need to consider keeping stock isolated or in more stable paddocks to reduce the risk of wind erosion. Alternatively, consider reducing stock numbers. Animal manure left to build up on-farm can support outbreaks of stable fly over the next few months. Manure should be either broken up and incorporated into pasture or composted in fly proof structures. Pasture nutritional value will be dropping off, so you might need to start hand feeding to meet stock nutritional demands. If you can store feed in a dry area, free of excessive rodents, buy grain and hay now rather than later. Tomato spotted wilt virus is spread by thrips insects and may cause severe damage to tomatoes, capsicums, lettuce and herbs. Remove infected plants and control weeds. Monitor soil moisture and irrigate as required, remembering to irrigate within the effective rootzone to reduce water wastage. Start monitoring the progress of this year’s revegetation work. If you only planted a few trees, extra time spent watering may increase the survival of these plants. Alternatively if you want to increase moisture left in soil and decrease weed competition, mulch around existing trees, remembering to leave a gap around the trunk to prevent disease and rot. If you have no stock, tall weeds may become an issue. Slash or mow tall grasses, but only at low fire-risk times of day when the air is still and cool. If in doubt, check with your local fire officer. Juvenile foxes are out and about. Now that lambs are big they are at a lower risk, but poultry is now more likely the target. Total enclosure, including a roof is the best protection. Fruit fly activity increases and life cycle periods shorten as the weather gets warmer, so keep up your fruit fly management program – make sure you clean up after any early harvests and maintain baiting/trapping in harvested blocks for a minimum of four weeks after harvest. Until next time keep safe and remember if you are not yet ready for the summer fire season then don’t wait any longer – act now. It really is that easy! AND, while you’re at it - please vote for the Karl McManus Foundation as well. Remember: It does sound strange, but believe it or not you can put an email address on the phone number field for texting and it will go through to Dick Smith Foods. Full details regarding this can be found at www.dicksmithfoods.com.au/charity-breakthrough Thank you to those who have already voted for us - your support is truly appreciated. Wow—It is amazing to think another year of Pony Club is over and done with. What a fantastic year it has been and an amazing and huge thank you to all of our Coaches, Helpers and Riders for a super year. Mrs Appelbee has done a super effort in her first year of Coach Coordinator—and we can’t wait for what is in store next year! Firstly—congratulations to all of our riders who competed at the Avon Zone One Day Event held on the 26th of October. It was fantastic to see so many of our riders competing in the blue and gold in fantastic Pony Club spirit! For Katie and Georgie it was there first ever one day event, and for Bronte, it was her first ODE on her new pony. Well done to everyone for their effort at the ODE—what a great experience for all! A huge congratulations to our place getters—fantastic effort girls! Open and Zone E grade over 14 - 2nd Amy and Tom. 3rd Vicky and Rusty. Whilst the girls were eventing, Kip and Mynty were Showing and did fantastically well at Gidgegannup and at Wooroloo the following day. Champion Pony—well done Kip! And how else to finish the Pony Club year, than a fun day rally topped off with a fancy dress ride down the main street followed by lunch.—the only twist—was most of our riders went bare back for the day—that did provide more than a laugh or two! We started the day with pairs bare back dressage, judged by Mrs Appelbee. Well done to Digby and Bethy Blanch for getting the best score as a pair! This was followed by a musical tyre race, jumping relay and then Fancy Dress. What a fantastic and creative lot we have. There was the Come on Aussie, Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz. a knight, Indians, hippies, zebras, lots more and even an aeroplane—yes an aeroplane— whatever will they think of next! After parading down the main street (with Oliver Twist (or was it the Artful Dodger?) in tow picking up the friendship nuggets left by our four legged friends we headed back to the club rooms for some well needed lunch and the most exciting part of the day—presentations! A very big thank you to Mrs Barrett Lennard for the great ice cream cake—a welcome treat after lunch!
