KINGSBRIDGE COMMUNITY COLLEGE NEWSLETTER - December 2014 01548 852641 DT LONDON RESIDENTIAL 13 AS & A2 DT students spent three days in London for a Design Trip under the expert guidance of Mr Luckhurst. During their visit the students undertook a series of design and research tasks in the Science, Design and Brunel Museums. The study exercise in the Design Museum, handling and drawing a range of iconic lamps, has set up students for their next Task Lamp design exercise. Students also attended a programme of lectures at London University by five successful designers who entertained and informed the students as they explored and illustrated critical design issues in a variety of fields. These ranged from fashion design and affordable housing to environmentally friendly bicycle helmets and bespoke luxury products. Thank you to Mr Luckhurst for giving up the time to take the students on this inspiring visit. BRILLIANT EXAM RESULTS – OFFICIAL! We have now received the annual Government analysis which compares our examination results this year with those of schools across the whole country. I am delighted that our GCSE results show that the progress and attainment of that year group was significantly above national averages. Many congratulations to all last year’s Year 11. www.kingsbridgecollege.org.uk JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR TRIUMPH We have seen many extraordinary productions at the College over the years and this year’s production of Jesus Christ Superstar has certainly taken us to new heights. I have received many comments from members of the audience about how this year’s production moved them quite literally to tears such was its emotional power. Many congratulations to all of the cast and crew and many thanks to Mr Lewis, Miss Mitchell, Mr Johnson and Mr Courtice for directing drama and music of such power. FLOODLIGHTS ON THE ARTIFICIAL TURF PITCH PRE-PUBLIC EXAMS Our floodlights have been out of action since the recent storms which caused some damage to one column. We are having a programme of work to improve the strength of the installation and ensure that this does not happen again. Our contractor should have this finished by the end of January and we are very sorry for the inconvenience that this has caused to our users. These important exams take place during the Spring Term: Years 12-13 These take place during the week 12-16th January 2015. Details of the timetable are posted on the College website. Year 11 These take place between Thursday 5th February and Thursday, 12th February. Again, details of the timetable are posted on the College website. YEAR 8 PARENTS’ EVENING AND COURSE SELECTION FAIR We all want these examinations to provide a clear picture of your son/daughter’s progress so it is very important that students prepare well. Teachers will be given advice about revision and practice papers to help students prepare. There is lots of practical support, advice and revision materials on our FROG Virtual Learning Environment: do encourage your children to access these. We hope to see you there. -2- YEAR 13 WINNERS SOUTH PHOTOGRAPHY THE CATWALK DEVON TAKES TO Professional fashion photographer, Eliot Seagal, spent a day in College running workshops for Year 12 Photography students. Our Governor, Nick Grodhunce, arranged for professional hairdressers to come and style students’ hair and local businesses lent them gowns and costumes for the shoot. Seeing clusters of students taking multiple shots of glamorous models on exotic sets made our College hall suddenly seem like catwalk at London Fashion Week! The resulting work is of such high quality I am sure we shall be seeing some of our students working for Vogue before too long. Many congratulations to the Year 13 Rugby Squad who have completed their College rugby careers as the South Devon Tournament Winners. They beat South Dartmoor 33-7, then Churston Grammar 57-0, Devon High School for Boys Grammar 44-0, before beating Torquay Boys Grammar 22-0.
