COPACABANA’S NEW YEAR'S EVE PARTY STARTS OFF THE TRIBUTES TO THE 450TH
ANNIVERSARY OF RIO DE JANEIRO WITH A FIREWORKS SPECTACLE AND CONCERTS OF
GREAT BRAZILIAN MUSIC NAMES
To celebrate the anniversary of the city, the event will have three stages, 16 minutes of
fireworks spectacle and musical attractions like Titãs, Seu Jorge and Maria Rita.
The 450th anniversary of the “Marvelous City” will be the theme of the biggest New Year's
Eve open air party of the world. A spectacle of fireworks set to music with unprecedented
effects and shows with great stars of brazilian music will kick off the celebrations which
begin at the turn of 2015 and extend throughout the year. The event aims to show the
exhilarating joy of Rio, the amazing carnivals that are known worldwide and the beauty of
our summers. Copacabana’s New Year's Eve party will not be the only event to honor Rio
de Janeiro at the turn of the year. Other neighborhoods will also have parties to celebrate
the date. In total, nine venues around the city.
Riotur estimates more than 2 million visitors this year. On New Year's Eve the “cariocas”
command the party. It is an honor to start the official commemorations of the 450th
anniversary of Rio de Janeiro with the mark of the Carioca celebrations on all the stages of
our New Year's Eve party" says the Secretary of Tourism Antonio Pedro Figueira de Mello.
It is expected that 816,000 tourists will visit the city during the New Year's Celebrations
spending about $ 650 million, an increase of 6% compared to the 2013 numbers 767,000
and 5.5% with business income of 614 million dollars. The average hotel occupancy rate is
about 73%, as reported by the fist research by ABIH/RJ. Five-star hotels are among the
most popular, with occupancy at around 80%. On the night of new year’s eve it will be
even more crowded: on December 31st to January 1st, city hotels will have already hit 79%
occupancy, and this number reaches 85% in reservations made so far in five-star hotels.
New research will be published in the second half of the month, with updated data.
Flavio Machado, executive VP of SRCOM and artistic director of the event said that this
edition will be even more special. "The New Year's Eve party in Copacabana is the best and
biggest in the world. To start 2015, the party will have concerts with great names of
Brazilian music and an unprecedented fireworks effects spectacle." The event is promoted
by the City of Rio de Janeiro, through the Riotur, and produced by SRCOM. Petrobras,
Johnson & Johnson, Embratel/Claro, Light, Coca-Cola, Antarctica, Bradesco and Cielo are
the sponsors of the event, which also has partnership with the State Government of Rio de
Janeiro, through the Department of Culture, and federally with the Ministry of Culture, by
culture incentives laws.
Copacabana’s New Year's Eve will not be the only event to honor the city of Rio de Janeiro
at the turn of the year. Using a single brand, especially created for the occasion, in total,
nine other venues around the city will also have parties to celebrate the date.
Fireworks spectacle has unprecedented effects
At midnight, January 1st, the Copacabana sky will light up with pyrotechnics fireworks
made by Pirotecnica Igual Brazil, a Barcelona based and reputed company responsible for
the fireworks show for seven consecutive years. The highlight of the event will be the
fireworks set to music at the “Princess of the Sea” beach - an unprecedented effect that
will make people celebrate the new year with an exclusive music track created especially
for the occasion.
Colorful volcanoes with two levels of eruption will be used in sequence with great lightning
effects, which will share space with a red tear bombs of great caliber. A tribute to the city
that will thrill the audience: the phrase 'Rio 450' will shine in the sky, celebrating the
anniversary of the “Marvelous City”.
11 barges with a total of 24 tons of fireworks: each containing 3,000 shells controlled by a
computerized trigger system. Pirotecnia Igual was responsible for the fireworks at the
opening of the Barcelona Olympics in 1992 and has executed the fireworks show of
Valparaíso, Chile, for 25 years.
Exclusive soundtrack to commemorate the 450th anniversary
The fireworks are choreographed to a soundtrack especially created by DJ João Brazil and
Sonido Studio for the spectacle, mixing MPB standards and orchestrated music. Citizen of
Rio, the DJ is known to have taken Brazilian percussion to the most popular ballads of
Europe and with it creating great mash-ups.
Lucas Duque, partner of Sonido Studio, explains the deal: "We wanted to do something
really excited. We worked through this briefing and got an arrangement that combines
several songs into one. Songs that can express the spirit of Rio.”
