From the Library Director
by Earlene H. Arnett
For the library, July is the beginning of a new year. This year as I gathered statistics I decided
to look back at our first year in our current facility and compare it to the 06-07 fiscal year. The
number of citizens entering our doors since July 2001 has increased by 26%. Last year over
one hundred and eighty five thousand people visited your public library. While the book
collection of 91,626 reflects a 20% growth, total book check outs have increased by 17%. This
seems low as our traffic increased by 26%. If we ask ourselves why do people visit their public library we find that libraries are no longer just about books. People visit their library to
use the Internet (174% increase) and to attend programs. The library has increased the number of programs provided both in house and through outreach by 67%. Seven hundred fiftyone programs were conducted last year with over fifteen thousand people attending.
As I think about the 06-07 library year, I am proud of how our staff and board have worked
hard to continue to provide first class library service. During this time the library was the
proud recipient of two Prime Time Family Reading Time grants. With community support,
Prime Time Family Reading Time brought non-library user families together at the library to
learn and practice the art of reading as a family. We hope to bring this program to Scott
County again in 2008.

President
 Shirley Ison,
Vice-President
 Shirley Smith,
Secretary
 June Camp, Treasurer
New services added in 06-07 were wireless Internet service and downloadable audios.
Currently our study tables are wired for laptop electrical service and the entire building is
wireless. Downloadable audios are now offered through your library. If you enjoy listening to
books visit the library website at www.scottpublib.org for all the information you need to get
started. You will be able to download a book from the convenience of your home.
As you can tell, your public library has been growing right along with our entire community.
This growth has allowed us to bring new additions for our 07-08 fiscal year. Watch our new
parking lot take shape and look for some new faces among our staff.

New adults titles…
Fiction
The Back Nine by Billy Mott. Looking for the anonymity and
order that can only come on the quiet grounds of a golf course,
Charlie McCleod returns to San Francisco and the game that
defined him years ago. In this poignant redemption tale, Mott
has created a story that transcends the game of golf.
The Department of Lost & Found by Allison Winn Scotch. A
fabulous debut novel, Scotch has written a story of hope and
resolve, of a woman's digging deeper than she ever thought
possible, and--ultimately--of making her own luck even when
she's been dealt an uneven hand.
Indian Bride by Karin Fossum. In this novel by one of Europe's
most successful crime writers, Inspector Konrad Sejer understand that good people can commit atrocious deeds, and that no
one is altogether as innocent as he or she may appear.
Justice Denied by J.A. Jance. The killing of an ex-con seems
straightforward enough, but when Seattle investigator J.P.
Beaumont starts digging, the case becomes deeply complicated in this twisting tale of corruption, conspiracy, and
murder.
River Wife by Jonis Agee. This stunning novel tells the story of
Jacques Ducharme, a frontier river pirate, and the five women
whose lives he touches.
Nonfiction
Anchored in Love: An Intimate Portrait of June Carter
Cash by John Carter Cash. This is an inside look into the life
of June Carter Cash, through the eyes of her only child with
Johnny Cash. With skillful prose, John Carter Cash reveals
new information about the legendary woman through his tender memories and heartwarming stories.
From Baghdad, With Love: a Marine, the War, and a Dog
Named Lava by Jay Kopelman. This war memoir relates how
one scruffy puppy sneaked his way into the hearts of hardened
Marines
The Green Book: the Everyday Guide to Saving the Planet
One Simple Step at a Time by Elizabeth Rogers and Thomas
M. Kostigen. This valuable guide offers hundreds of simple,
actionable steps readers can take to help save the Earth
Kitchen table wisdom: stories that heal by Rachel Naomi
Remen. In this collection of deeply moving, true stories,
Remen reminds readers that the things that ultimately enrich
life are the things that cannot be measured. Her unique
perspective on healing is rooted in her background as a
physician, a teacher of medicine, and a long-term survivor of
chronic illness.
Lives of the Planets: a Natural History of the Solar System by
