The Waycross Debutantes and Junior Debutantes were thrilled to give
back to the community by donating
$100 to the Empty Stocking Fund.
The chairperson of the debutantes
and junior debs, Dr. Shawanna B.
Johnson, said, “The ladies of Delta
Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. are very
proud and honored to be working with
and mentoring such a giving and talented group of young ladies.”

At Emancipation Event
The Black Action Committee,
Inc. will present the annual observance of the Emancipation
Proclamation signing on Thursday, Jan. 1, at 11 a.m. at Kingdom Dominion Ministries, 300
Mary St., Waycross.
The pastor of Kingdom Dominion Ministries, the Rev. Carlos White, will be the speaker for
the occasion.
The Emancipation Proclamation was signed by President
Abraham Lincoln, on the first
day of January 1863. It was Lincoln's declaration that all slaves
would be permanently freed in
all areas of the Confederacy that
had not already been returned to
federal control.
Some say President Lincoln
didn’t issue the Emancipation
Proclamation to free slaves but
to save the Union. In any event,
most slaves were set free as a result.
“Each year, we gather to commemorate the signing of this
document,” said a local
spokesman.
Everyone is invited to celebrate the historic event.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack
Obama said Friday that Sony Pictures Entertainment “made a mistake” in shelving a satirical film
about a plot to assassinate North Korea’s leader.
He declared the United States would respond “in a
place and manner and time that we choose” to a
hack attack on Sony that the FBI blamed on the
communist government.
Speaking of Sony executives, Obama said at a
year-end news conference, “I wish they had spoken to me first. ... We cannot have a society in
which some dictatorship someplace can start imposing censorship.”
Obama said he imagined situations in which
dictators “start seeing a documentary that they
don’t like or news reports that they don’t like.”
The president spoke not long after the FBI accused the North Korean government of being responsible for the hacking attack against Sony,
providing the most detailed accounting to date of
the expensive break-in. Obama’s pointed criticism
of Sony shifted focus to whether the studio would
reverse its decision, as some leading celebrities —
including actor George Clooney and comedian
Patton Oswalt — have recommended.
“Sony is a corporation. It suffered significant
damage. There were threats against its employees.
I am sympathetic to the concerns that they faced,”
he said. “Having said all that, yes, I think they
made a mistake.”
The administration earlier in the day formally
accused North Korea’s government of being responsible but offered few hints about how it might
retaliate. Its evidence: The U.S. detected communications between computer Internet addresses
known to be operated by North Korea and hacking
tools left behind at the crime scene, which the FBI

The Tangs and Wong’s have
for many years been solid supporters of the local blood drives.
The Tangs have never — as best
as can be determined — said
“no” to a request for an accommodation. The Waycross Area
Blood Drive Volunteers are just
one of hundreds of causes to “hit
them up.”

Pakistan Continues To Make Militants Pay
ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistan
hanged two convicted militants Friday in
the country’s first executions in years,
while warplanes and ground forces
pounded insurgent hideouts in a northwest
region bordering Afghanistan — part of a
stepped-up response to the Taliban slaughter of scores of schoolchildren.
Unchastened by criticism from all corners of the globe, the Taliban threatened
earlier Friday to kill more children if executions were carried out as promised.
“We can create a mourning situation at
the homes of many army generals and
politicians,” spokesman Mohammad
Khurassani said in a statement emailed to
reporters.
A key question now is whether attacking children will undermine the sympathy
many Pakistanis have for the militants.
Analysts say the Islamabad government
needs strong public support to continue
the fight against insurgents in the northwest.

Maulana Abdul Aziz, a radical cleric in
Islamabad, warned in his Friday sermon at
the famous Lal Masjid mosque about a
backlash in the event of executions.
Aziz expressed his sorrow over the
schoolchildren’s deaths but also called for
ending the operation against the Taliban in
the tribal regions of North Waziristan and
Khyber. He called the Taliban “our broth-

But there were signs, albeit small, that
this type of speech will find a tougher audience in Pakistan after Tuesday’s attack,
when militants strapped with explosives
broke into a military-run school in Peshawar and killed 148 people — almost
all of them children.
A few hundred people protested Friday
night outside the Lal Masjid mosque, calling for an end to support for the militants.
