STACY B. WATSON
GEORGIA PORTS AUTHORITY
roll-off up 10%. total tonnage is 2nd under Baltimore in U.S. Savannah is
fastest growing port in the U.S. and has best gate times in U.S.
Bob Hereford, Executive director Waycross-Ware County Development Authority filled in for Steve Pope and introduced Stacy B. Watson,
General Manager, Economic and Industrial Development, Georgia Ports
Authority in Savannah Georgia. Watson stated that the Garden Port has
nine ship berths, and 33 cranes on the dock. They handle three million
containers per year and have the capacity to double production in the future for the Southeastern region. The Georgia Ports Authority is a private
authority which makes it easier to arrange growth and changes needed
when dealing with the federal government and large financial institutions
compared to publicly governmentally owned ports in the U.S.
They operate five terminals in Georgia. The Garden terminal in Savannah has 23 cranes and is going to 33 cranes. City terminal, Ocean terminal has 200 acres with 1 crane and is important to the state with roll-ons
and offs. Brunswick Colonel’s Island is 2nd in U. S. handling vehicles. East
River East dock is upgrading for exporting wood pellets. Mayor’s Port
Authority handles primarily paper products. Two ports in Columbus and
Bainbridge are small having not over 9’ depth entrance.
All ports handle 29.4 tonnage and is up 8.0% this year (July-June). TEU
(Transportation tonnage measurement unit) has increased 6.4% above
pre-recession levels. Inter-modal containers are up 5.8% Roll-on and

CSX has between 150-200 employees per shift in Waycross and moves
