O. Box 1507 Abbeville, LA 70511-1507 website: stmarymagdalenparish.org Telephone: 893-0244 Fourth Sunday of Advent December 21, 2014 From the Pastor….. Fourth Sunday of Advent “Cooperating with God” “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.” Mary chose to cooperate with God. She didn’t completely understand how his plan was going to unfold. She couldn’t have known exactly what it all meant for her future. But she chose to offer herself to God’s service nonetheless. And thanks to that generosity, the first Christmas happened nine months later. Mary gives us a powerful example of saying yes to God. For her, God’s plan was revealed through the visit of the Angel Gabriel. For us, it is usually revealed in less dramatic ways. We hear God’s voice through the readings at Mass, through the homily, through the wise advice of a trusted friend, through a spiritual book, or just in the prayerful silence of our own hearts. Regardless of how God speaks to us, we are in a similar situation to Mary’s. We are faced with the choice either to accept God’s will in our lives, saying yes as Mary did, or else to say no and choose a different path. It may be tempting to avoid the challenge of surrendering our plans to God. But just look what happened when Mary decided to let God lead: the greatest miracle in all of history! And God wants to work miracles through us too. This Christmas at Mass I ask God to come into your life and your family with the eternal gifts of Faith, Hope and Love. Have a Blessed and Merry Christmas! Mass Intentions for the week of December 22nd—December 28th, 2014 MONDAY 6:30A.M. Cody Ross Mire; Kile Griffin; Dominic Ngueyn Ngoc Con (Ann.); TUESDAY 6:30 A.M. On July 26-31, 2015, we are planning to take our high school youth (incoming freshman to outgoing seniors) on a Mission Trip to Puerto Rico, through Magnificat Travel. Our youth will be chaperoned by persons who have been on this same trip several times, and other adults, along with persons within the mission. The magic number we will need to reach for participants is 30 but as with everything, the more persons we have on the trip the lower the cost. While our primary focus will be our high school students, we ask any college or older adults who may be interested in this Mission to please call or text Drew David (Youth Director) with names if you are interested. MUCH more information will be coming in the following weeks along with a parent/ participant meeting in February. Feel free to call or text Drew at 337-652-9096. This endeavor will be an unbelievable blessing to our Church parish. Thank you and God bless. Christian Formation Sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Communion Mary’s Divine Motherhood Called in the Gospels “the mother of Jesus,” Mary is claimed by Elizabeth, at the prompting of the Spirit and even before the birth of her son, as “the mother of my Lord.” In fact, the One whom she conceived as man by the Holy Spirit, who truly became her Son according to the flesh, was none other than the Father’s eternal Son, the second person of the Holy Trinity. Hence the Church confesses that Mary is truly “Mother of God” (Theotokos). The Council of Ephesus decreed in 431 that Mary is Theotokos because her son Jesus is the one person who is both God and man, divine and human. Catechism of the Catholic Church: 495 The next session for the 2nd grade CCD preparation program for First Reconciliation and First Communion will be on Tuesday, January 6, at 4:15 p.m. in the Ministries Building. Saint Peter Chrysologus (c.406-450) Doctor of the Church “Mary the mother of Jesus was betrothed to Joseph” “His mother, Mary, was betrothed.” It should have been enough to say: Mary was betrothed. What can a betrothed mother mean? If she is a mother then she isn’t betrothed; if she is betrothed then she isn’t yet a mother! “His mother, Mary, was betrothed”: betrothed by virginity, mother by fecundity. This was a mother without experience of a man but who yet experienced motherhood. How could she not be a mother before she had conceived who, after giving birth, remains both virgin and mother? When was she not a mother, she who is about to conceive him who set in motion the time that gives things their beginning?... Why was the mystery of heavenly innocence given to a betrothed girl and not to a virgin who was still free? Why did a fiancé’s jealousy put his betrothed in peril? Why should such great virtue appear to be sin or salvation to be eternal danger?... What mystery exercises us in all this, my brethren? There is not a stroke, a letter, a syllable, a word, a name, a person in all the Gospel that is empty of divine significance. A betrothed girl was chosen that the Church, Christ’s betrothed, might also be signified according to the word of the prophet Hosea: “I will betroth you to me in right and justice, in love and mercy; I will betroth you in fidelity”. That is why John said: “The one who has the bride is the Bridegroom” (Jn 3:29). And Saint Paul: “I betrothed you to one Spouse to present you as a chaste virgin to Christ” (2Cor 11:2). O Church, true spouse, who through the virginal birth (of baptism) conceives a new childhood from Christ! “Do not be afraid, Mary” Saint Bernard You have heard, O Virgin, that you are to conceive and bring forth a Son, and that it will not be through the power of man but by the virtue of the Holy Spirit. The angel awaits your reply, for it is time that he should return to God who sent him. We, too, are waiting, O Lady, for a word of mercy: we, who are groaning under the sentence of condemnation. See, the price of our salvation is offered to you; if you consent, we shall at once be delivered. By the Eternal Word of God were we all created, and behold we will all die. By your brief answer we shall be refreshed and recalled to life…. Hasten, then, O Lady, to give your answer; hasten to speak the word so longed for by all the earth, in limbo, and in heaven. Yes, the King and Lord of all things, who has “greatly desired your beauty” (Ps 45), desires as eagerly your word of consent by which He has purposed to save the world. He whom you pleased by your silence will be yet more pleased by your reply. Hark! He calls to you from heaven: “O most beautiful among women, let me hear your voice” (Sg 1,8;2,14)… Answer the angel quickly, then; yes, through the angel give your consent to your God. Answer one syllable, receive the Word; utter your own word and conceive that which is Divine. Speak the word that is transitory, and embrace the Word that is everlasting… “Behold,” she says, “the handmaid of the Lord. Be it done to me according to your Word.” Page 4 Stewardship and Development Weekly Offertory Second Collections December 14, 2014 Collection Regular Collection: $ 19,002.20 Second Collection: Insurance $ 3,259.58 Immaculate Conception $ 2,705.02 Thank You for your generosity. This Weekend BISHOP’S SERVICES APPEAL Christmas Masses MAINTENANCE FUND THANK YOU Fourth Sunday of Advent The Catholic Daughters Sock and Slipper Drive was a success! Thanks to the generosity of our parishioners 58 pairs of slippers and 88 pairs of socks were collected. These will be given to the Nunez Nursing Home residents. Thank You to all who donated! We also express our gratitude to the members of the Hospitality Committee who organized, decorated and served; and to all who donated treats, for the reception following the Christmas Concert. In today’s Gospel reading we hear proclaimed the story of the Annunciation, when the angel of the Lord announced to Mary that she would give birth to Christ through the intercession of the Holy Spirit. Mary allowed God’s messenger to speak to her. She was attentive, not afraid to enter into a dialogue, then unconditionally obedient. Mary’s acceptance of this mystery is a stewardship model for us. Good stewards remain open to the incursions of divine life into the normal course of their daily lives. How open are we to the promptings of the Holy Spirit in our own lives? What might we do this last week of Advent to be more attentive to the Lord? Lord as we journey through this Advent season, give us the wisdom to be good stewards of this time of grace, a time to be more prayerful, to listen more intently to Your Word; a time to allow our faith to grow and mature. Show us how to give witness to your Good News more fervently among our families, friends and those with whom we worship. Help us be more aware of those who are poor, lonely or suffering; and to serve them as if we were serving You. And fill our hearts with hope, so that we may make straight Your path with confidence and zeal, and prepare for the joy of Your coming! We pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen. Page 5 A little Child, a shining star, A stable rude, the door ajar. Yet in that place, So crude, forlorn, The Hope of all The world was born. Time, Talent, and Treasure SAINT FULGENTIUS OF RUSPE ON ST. STEPHEN THE MARTYR (Memorial: December 26th) Our king, despite his exalted majesty, came in humility for our sake; yet he did not come empty-handed. He gave of his bounty, yet without any loss to himself. In a marvelous way he changed into wealth the poverty of his faithful followers while remaining in full possession of his own inexhaustible riches. And so the love that brought Christ from heaven to earth raised Stephen from earth ot heaven; shown first in the king, it later shone forth in his soldier. His love of God kept him from yielding to the ferocious mob; his love for his neighbor made him pray for those who were stoning him. Love inspired him to reprove those who erred, to make them amend; love led him to pray for those who stoned him, to save them from punishment. Love, indeed, is the source of all good things; it is an impregnable defense, and the way that leads to heaven. He who walks in love can neither go astray nor be afraid: love guides him, protects him, and brings him to his journey's end. My brothers, Christ made love the stairway that would enable all Christians to climb to heaven. Hold fast to it, therefore, in all sincerity, give one another practical proof of it, and by your progress in it, make your ascent together. Why I love you, Mary Oh! I love you, Mary, saying you are the servant Of the God whom you charm by your humility (Lk1:38) This hidden virtue makes you all-powerful. It attracts the Holy Trinity into your heart. Then the Spirit Of Love covering you with his shadow, (Lk1:35) The Son equal to the Father became incarnate in you, There will be a great many of his sinner brothers, Since he will be called: Jesus, your first-born! (Lk2:7) O beloved Mother, despite my littleness, Like you I possess The All-Powerful within me. But I don’t tremble in seeing my weakness: The treasures of a mother belong to her child, And I am your child, o my dearest Mother. Aren’t your virtues and your love mine too? So when the white Host comes into my heart, Jesus, your Sweet Lamb, thinks he is resting in you! You make me feel that it’s not impossible To follow in your footsteps, O Queen of the elect. You made visible the narrow road to Heaven While always practicing the humblest virtues. Near you, Mary, I like to stay little. At the home of Saint Elizabeth, receiving your visit, I learn how to practice ardent charity. There, Sweet Queen of angels, I listen, delighted, To the sacred canticle springing forth from your heart (Lk1:46) You teach me to sing divine praises, To glory in Jesus my Savior. Your words of love are mystical roses Destined to perfume the centuries to come. In you the Almighty has done great things. I want to ponder them to bless him for them. Poem by Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus Verses 4-7 THE ADVENT WREATH The wreath’s symbolism of the advent (coming) of Light into the world is clear. The gradual lighting of the four candles, one on each Sunday of the Advent season, combined with the liturgical colors of the candles (purple is the penitential color used during Advent and Lent; rose is a liturgical color used only on Gaudete Sunday in Advent and Laetare Sunday in Lent) help to symbolize not only our expectation and hope in Our Savior’s first coming into the world, but also in his Second Coming as Judge at the end of the world. The appropriate Advent collect can be said as the candle is lit each day of the week, followed by the blessing before meals, if you use the wreath at mealtime. The second Sunday two purple candles are lit; the third Sunday, two purple and one rose; and all candles are lit on the fourth Sunday. COLLECTS FOR ADVENT These prayers, faithful translations of the Latin collects, or opening prayers, may be said every evening when the Advent wreath is lit. FOURTH WEEK Pour fourth thy power, O Lord, and come: Assist us by that mighty power, so that by the grace and merciful kindness we may swiftly receive the salvation that our sins impede: Who livest and reignest with thee in the unity of the Holy Spirit, ever one God, world without end. Amen. Page 6 Langlinais & Broussard ____________________________________ Certified Public Accountants 2419 Veterans Memorial Dr. 893-6232 209 S. St. Charles Street, Abbeville 893-4661 TRICIA H.
