The Symphonic and Concert Bands are part of a comprehensive music program at Buffalo Grove High School. Both ensembles meet one period a day and receive academic credit. Jazz Band 1 rehearses after school, meets the entire school year, and receives academic credit. Jazz Band 2 is a seasonal activity that meets one evening a week from November through the spring. The “Bison Pride” Marching and Pep Bands consist of members from the Symphonic and Concert Bands, and perform at home football and basketball games. The music curriculum also offers opportunities to orchestral and vocal students as well as AP Music Theory and Jazz Theory and Improvisation. Edward R. Jacobi, Jr. is in his 30th year as the Director of Bands at Buffalo Grove High School. He previously served as the Director of Bands at Lake Zurich High School in Lake Zurich, Illinois and as the Assistant Band Director and Director of Jazz Studies at Clinton High School in Clinton, Iowa. He received his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from the University of Illinois in UrbanaChampaign. Mr. Jacobi has directed ten successful concert tours to Europe (1987, 1990, 1993, 1996, 1998, 2001, 2004, 2007, 2010, and 2013). The next tour is scheduled for 2016 (next year). Mr. Jacobi has been involved with the exchange with our “sister-school”, the Kundmanngasse Gymnasium in Vienna, Austria since its inception in 1990. This next fall we will celebrate the 25th Anniversary of our great exchange. Mr. Jacobi is very proud to have been involved in all of them. The Symphonic Band received one of the highest honors given to high school bands when it was invited to perform at the Illinois Music Educators Association, All-State Festival in Peoria, Illinois in 2003. The performance took place in the Peoria Civic Center Theater. In March of 2012 Mr. Jacobi and the Symphonic Band performed for the first time at Orchestra Hall in Symphony Center, the home of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. This was a landmark occasion for our school, band program, and Mr. Jacobi. The performance was memorable also for the level at which our band performed. In April of 2013 the band performed, by invitation, with the University of Illinois Wind Orchestra at the University of Illinois in the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts in the Great Hall. In addition to these concert accolades, Mr. Jacobi directed the 2007 IMEA All -State Jazz Band. For the past several years he also has guest lectured at the University of Illinois School of Music’s Jazz Pedagogy Class taught by Professor Glenn Wilson. Each year Mr. Jacobi judges the jazz trumpet auditions at the All-State Music Festival. Both of Mr. Jacobi’s sons have also received Bachelors’ Degrees in Music Education from the University of Illinois. Andrew is in his third year as the Director of Bands at Richwoods High School in Peoria, Illinois and Brendan, who just graduated, works with band programs in the area. Both studied in Vienna, Austria and they work with the “Bison Pride” Marching Band in the summer camps. They have participated in several European Concert Tours playing and directing the band, leading tours, and being a valuable resource as they have each travelled to Europe over ten times. Both young men are continuing their college studies with Andrew completing his first semester in the Master’s of Music Education curriculum at the University of Illinois and Brendan continuing to take science classes as he continues to create greater opportunities for himself. Mrs. Jacobi has taught Foreign Language at Hoffman Estates for the last 30 years and is the PastPresident of the Northern Illinois Division of the American Association of Teachers of French (AATF). Mr. Jacobi is very proud of his family’s accomplishments and likes to share the stage with them whenever he can. The Buffalo Grove Instrumental Association (BGIA) provided this evening’s meal for you. The BGIA is the parent support group for the Buffalo Grove High School Band. This organization provides opportunities for our students to fund raise for trips, as well as sponsor various activities. We also raise funds so awards, scholarships, and state of the art equipment can be made available for our band students. Your support of these activities helps us to provide valuable opportunities for our students, as well as enable us to host evenings like tonight. Our sponsorship program is the financial anchor of our organization. We hope if you have a family member involved in tonight’s concert and you are not yet a sponsor, you will consider enrolling to support our program. Thank you for attending tonight. We appreciate your continued support of our program. She left suddenly and her loss is felt deeply by all who knew her. She was a loving and supportive mother to Tory and her sister, Becca, who was a four-year band member. Wherever her daughters were performing, in music or in athletics, she was there. Vivian was an inspiration to everyone, and we are thinking of her tonight. Tonight’s program is dedicated to her and her beautiful family.
