PUBLIC CITIZENS FOR CHILDREN AND YOUTH Giving Voice to Children These are tough times for many children. The challenges they face don’t lend themselves to simple solutions. But PCCY has demonstrated, time and time again, that it can create positive change for children by mobilizing citizens and public officials to address their urgent needs. Public Citizens for Children and Youth (PCCY), a private nonprofit organization, is dedicated to improving the lives and life chances of our region’s children through thoughtful and informed advocacy . Because PCCY is the only advocacy organization in our region that looks out for the whole child, it is committed to systemic reform across the spectrum—from public education to healthcare, from infant nutrition to child care and early education. PCCY empowers com munities to speak for all of our children. Since its founding 34 years ago, PCCY has been a catalyst for significant policy changes to benefit children, including: PCCY ensured that Pennsylvania enacted the CHIP program, which grants access to healthcare for children across the Commonwealth, and has continued to fight for expanded health coverage. PCCY is the force behind the School Breakfast Challenge, advocating to have school meals included as a metric in school performance standards. As a result, 61,000 school breakfasts are served every day in Philadelphia public and charter schools. PCCY led the charge for full day kindergarten which now reaches 10,000 Philadelphia school children and nearly half of the children attending public school in the suburban counties. PCCY is one of organizations leading the charge to make high quality Pre-K available and affordable for every family in the state.
