Page Two THE WORD OF GOD THIS SUNDAY: For this Sunday, the Fourth Sunday of Advent, the Scripture readings speak strongly of joy. The first reading, from the Second Book of Samuel reminds us of God presence in any future we intend to build. The second reading, from the Letter to the Romans, speaks of the unfolding mystery of God’s plan. In the Gospel, we are reminded of the very beginning of the Incarnation. FINANCIAL INFORMATION Page Six December 21, 2014 To Build A Church, a Church Alive Pledge Redemption Instructions Over the next five years, we will be collecting on the pledges made to our To Build A Church, A Church Alive Campaign which will enable us to build our church. In order to make the process easier for both you and the parish, we ask that you please utilize the following information when you fulfill your commitment. Pledge Payments Remittance statements are mailed the last week of every month. If you are sending payments on a different schedule than monthly, the remittance statement schedule is the same, but you’ll receive them when you selected — semi-annually, annually, etc. In order to assist Saint Kilian with the pledge payment process over the next five years, please wait for your reminder statement before sending any payments to To Build A Church, A Church Alive. Do not send payments directly to Saint Kilian. Pledges are centrally processed, and the Diocese sends the proceeds to Saint Kilian each quarter over the next five years via our parish’s Diocesan savings & loan account. If you need to make any changes to your pledge, or if there are any errors, please send the changes to: To Build A Church, A Church alive c/o Our Campaign for The Church Alive! PO Box 4 Pittsburgh, PA 15230 If you prefer to make your payments electronically (from a bank account or credit card) please visit the Faith Direct Website www.faithdirect.net where you can create an account or sign into your current account. Once on the main homepage of your account, click “Add an Organization,” then enter the code PA162 for the Diocese of Pittsburgh, not PA191 for Saint Kilian. Next, select Saint Kilian from the drop-down menu in order to have your payments apply to the To Build A Church, A Church Alive Campaign at Saint Kilian. The remaining steps will allow you to set up your payment schedule. Finally, you will need to link your payment to a major credit card or bank account of your choosing. Tax Letters Each year, tax letters will be sent from the Diocese for the preceding year of all pledge payments, note that these are separate from the information sent by Saint Kilian for your Offertory and Parish Share participation. Please direct any detailed tax questions to the Office of Stewardship: (412) 456-3085 or email [email protected]. REMEMBER IN YOUR PRAYERS Please pray for the following friends and family of Saint Kilian parishioners who are currently serving in the military: John N. Dvorak Mary D. Dvorak Dominic Greco Andrew Guevara Alan Gundloch Danielle Steed Gundloch LCpl. Dakota Harbison Will Hospodor Christopher Iole Dale Mahafkey Shawn Palmer TJ Palmer David Smeigh Vincent Steed MUSIC MINISTRY Today we sing a song, Christ, Circle Round Us written by Dan Schutte. The melody is based on the very ancient tune Salve Regina (Chant Mode V). The text is based on what are referred to as the “O Antiphons”. These antiphons were recited in Vespers for the last seven days of Advent. The practice is very ancient and there is some thought that it began as early as the 6th century. They refer to Christ in the Latin words Sapientia – Wisdom, Adonai-Lord, Radix Jesse-root of Jesse, Clavis David-key of David, Oriens-Dayspring, Rex Gentium-King of Nations, Emmanuel-With Us is God. There is conjecture that the Benedictine monks arranged these antiphons with a definite purpose.[4] If one starts with the last title and takes the first letter of each one—Emmanuel, Rex, Oriens, Clavis, Radix, Adonai, Sapientia—the Latin words ero cras are formed, meaning, "Tomorrow, I will come". Therefore Jesus, whose coming Christians have prepared for in Advent and whom they have addressed in these seven Messianic titles, now speaks to them: "Tomorrow, I will come." So the "O Antiphons" not only bring intensity to their Advent preparation, but bring it to a joyful conclusion. Our various choirs can be heard at the following liturgies: Devoto Bell Choir December 24th @ 4:00 pm CWNC Children’s Choir December 20th @ 5:30 pm December 24th @ 6:00 pm CWNC Adult Choir December 21st @ 10:30 am December 24th @ 10:00 pm CWNC If you would like more information regarding the Bell Choir, Children’s Choir or Adult Choir, please contact David Dreher 724-625-1665 x2113 or email [email protected]. Page Eight December 21, 2014 KINDERGARTEN NEWS The Kindergarten students have been busy little learners! We have been learning all about the Advent wreath and praying around our prayer tables each day. We are working to make ourselves better people by doing kind things, listening, helping at home and at school, and being sure to include others at lunch and at recess. The children recently performed the Story of Christmas for the school, their parents and special guests. They did a wonderful job telling the story of Jesus’ birth! In class each week, we talk about how important it is to be kind to each other and to take care of each other. All Kindergarten classes have been working hard to understand more about bullying and what to do if you are being bullied or see someone else being bullied. We practice standing up to someone who is doing something we don’t like. The students are always reminded to look for the kids who don’t have someone to play with or sit with at lunch, and to be sure to ask those kids to join them. The Kindergarten students are becoming wonderful readers! They work hard to learn their sight words each week, and we make time every day to enjoy some good books. Part of the homework assignments each week is to read a leveled reader and complete an activity to go along with the book; this ensures all students are reading at their own level and gaining confidence in their abilities. Along with reading, the students are also learning to write terrific sentences. Journal writing is one of our favorite activities! Math class is always a busy time for our students. The kids are enriched by playing many different math games each day after completing that day’s assignment. Recently, we all enjoyed a video conference from NASA learning about what life is like in outer space. The kids were fascinated to see what the earth looks like from space! Kindergarten is a wonderful place to be!! Merry Christmas to you all! SCIENCE FAIR JUDGE: Are you interested in Science? Do you have a science, engineering or medical background? Saint Kilian Parish School needs you! We are looking for judges for our annual science fair. As a judge, you listen to short 5-10 minute presentations from our middle school students about their science fair projects. Judging will take place on January 13, 14, 15 and 16 from 9:00 am until 2:30 pm every day. You can sign up for one day or multiple days. Please consider fostering our students’ scientific curiosity. If you are interested, please email Mrs. Cheryl Hufnagel at [email protected].
