MASS SCHEDULE
Beginning Friday, January 2nd Masses Monday through
Friday will be at 9:00 AM only. There will be no 9:00 AM
Mass on Saturdays. The 12:00 PM Mass on Sunday will
continue through the end of May.
FINANCIAL SITUATION
Just a reminder that we are dependent upon your generous contributions through the Sunday collections. We
have experienced a bit of a drop due to the announcement of our merger. We still have to maintain our beautiful Parish and hope that you would continue your previous
giving both on Sundays and especially at Christmas time.
In the last month we have had unexpected bills for the
repair of the organ and the boiler. We cannot run the Parish without these two essential things. We have already
spent close to $20,000 just in fuel costs thus far. The majority of our people love St. Ursula’s. Please don’t forget it
when you prepare your envelope for Sunday Mass.
Thank you for your generosity to us.

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION
Lord, this year I only have one resolution:
to try to be positive instead of being negative.
That’s it. That’s All.
Now I need Your help in keeping this resolution.
Remind me to see smiles and not the yawns.
CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS
I would like to thank all who helped to decorate the
Church for Christmas. The flowers, trees and decorations
help us to focus on Jesus and the true meaning of Christmas. We would also like to thank our Altar Servers, Ushers, Lectors, Eucharistic Ministers, Choirs, Organist, Sacristan and Deacons.
Help me to enjoy the rain, the snow, the cool
refreshing breeze, instead of only seeing
the cloudy skies that bring them.
ITALIAN CLUB
Bring in the New Year with the Italian Club Dinner Dance.
There’s plenty of food, music, Champaign to toast the
new year, noise makers and much more. The cost is
only $50.00.
Let me see attempts, what works,
and stop spotting what doesn't work.
FOOD PANTRY
THANK YOU to all the parishioners who so generously
contributed food and monetary donations to the Advent
Food Pantry. The Food Pantry staff greatly appreciated
your generosity.
When I walk into a room, let me start off with
something like, “It’s good to see you!”
Instead of, “Did you get that job done yet?”
Lord, help me with this New Year’s resolution
of trying to be positive, to build people up,
instead of being negative and wearing people out.
Amen.
Andrew Costello
SAINTS OF THE WEEK
December 29th - St. Thomas Becket, bishop, martyr
Thomas Becket, died 29 Dec. 1170; killed by order of
Henry II; eight years chancellor of England; as archbishop
of Canterbury defended the freedoms of the Church; canonized only three years after his death; considered the
most famous martyr of the Middle Ages.
December 31st - St. Sylvester I, Pope
Sylvester, died 335; as bishop of Rome (345-335), organized public worship and dedicated the Lateran basilica
(see 9 Nov.); represented at the Council of Nicea which
condemned Arianism; one of the first non-martyrs venerated as a saint.
January 2nd - Sts. Basil the Great and Gregory Nazianzen, bishops, Doctors of the Church
Basil, died 1 Jan. 379; hermit who became bishop of
Caesarea in Cappadocia; noted for his learning; foe of
Arianism; wrote a rule on monasticism; source of Eucharistic Prayer IV; along with Sts. Gregory Nazianzen, Athanasius (2 May) and John Chrysostom (13 Sept.), considered one of the four great doctors of the Eastern Church.
Gregory Nazianzen, died 25 Jan. 389 or 390; Patriarch of
Constantinople; noted for his knowledge of sacred Scripture; called theologus for his outstanding teaching abilities
and eloquence.
January 3rd - The Most Holy Name of Jesus
Through the particular efforts of St. Bernardine of Siena
(20 May), devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus (“Yahweh
is salvation”) was promoted through the inscription of the
monogram of the Holy Name, IHS (an abbreviation of the
Greek name for Jesus) and the addition of the name of
Jesus to the Hail Mary.

WE ARE GOD’S HOLY FAMILY
The scriptures of Israel are filled with many stories of
barren couples who were miraculously granted the gift of
children by God. Surely the best known among these is the
first reading from today, from which Luke took inspiration
when he recounted the miraculous birth of John the Baptist
to Zechariah and Elizabeth, and the more miraculous birth
of Jesus to Mary and Joseph. In each instance, we are
given examples or role models of those who trusted in God.
More than examples of those who trust, they are models of
self-surrender. They abandoned their own presuppositions
and prejudices about the workings of the world and turned
their lives over to belief in a God who can make life grow
where none ought to; a God who can turn death around
into a new and unimagined life; a God who can, today, take
a tiny child of humble parents in an insignificant town and
make him into a light for all the world. This is what we, as
God’s holy family, are called to do each day: to trust not in
ourselves and the way we think things should be, but to
open ourselves and surrender ourselves in faith to a God of
endless promise.

CHILDREN OF ETERNITY
You are children of eternity. Your immortal crown
awaits you, to reward your duty and love. You may indeed
sow here in tears, but you may be sure there to reap in
joy.
