A Word from the Pastor …
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Today’s Feast of the Holy Family encourages us to look to the Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph for inspiration, example and encouragement. They were a model family in which both parents worked hard, helped each other, understood and accepted each other in faith, and took good care of their Child so that He might grow up not only
in human knowledge but also as a Child of God. Jesus brought holiness to the family of Joseph and Mary, as Jesus
brings us holiness by embracing us into His family. The Holy Family teaches that happy family life depends on the
intensity of love, the exercise and respect for authority and hard work. In this time of utter confusion, it also reminds
us what a Christian family is made of: one father, one mother and offspring.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church gives the following advice to the parents: "Parents have the first responsibility
for the education of their children. They bear witness to this responsibility first by creating a home where tenderness, forgiveness, respect, fidelity, and disinterested service are the rule of life. The home is well suited for education in the virtues. This requires an apprenticeship in self-denial, sound judgment, and self-mastery - the preconditions of all true freedom. Parents should teach their children to subordinate the 'material and instinctual dimensions
to interior and spiritual ones.' The CCC adds: “Parents have a grave responsibility to give good example to their children.” (2223)
The feast of the Holy Family reminds us that as the basic unit of the universal Church, each family is called to holiness. In fact, Jesus Christ has instituted two sacraments in His Church to make society holy – the Sacrament of Priesthood and the Sacrament of Marriage. Through the priesthood, Jesus sanctifies the priest as well as his parish. Similarly, by the Sacrament of Marriage, Jesus sanctifies not only the spouses but also the entire family. Husband and
wife attain holiness when they discharge their duties faithfully, trusting in God, and drawing on the presence and
power of the Holy Spirit through personal and family prayer, meditative reading of the Bible, and devout participation in Holy Mass. Families grow in holiness when Christ Jesus is present in them. Jesus becomes truly present in the
parish church through the Sacrifice of the Holy Mass, the climax of Christian life. Similarly, Jesus becomes truly present in a family when all the members live in the Christian spirit of sacrifice and modesty.
On the Feast, all parents might want to examine themselves and see how well they are fulfilling the grave responsibility which God has placed on them. As they heard during their marriage ceremony: "Will you accept children lovingly from God and raise them up according to the teachings of Christ and His Church?” Children are a gift from
God; not a right. Children serve as the joy of their parents’ young years and the help and comfort of their old age,
but above and beyond that, they are a gift for which their parents are accountable before God, as they must, in the
end, return these, His children, to Him.
Study after study continues to show how fundamental the family dinner is. The more parents sit down for dinner
and other meals with their children as a family (having the opportunity to listen to their children’s joys and distresses, fears and hopes), the less will the children be likely to engage in smoking, drinking, drugs, pre-marital sex,
etc.
As we enter into the New Year, which will see Pope Francis coming to this area for the World Day of the Family in
September, why don’t we all make an effort to have the Sunday Eucharist become the center of the Day of the Lord,
preferably attending as a family? While it is understandable that many things are fighting for our time and our attention, let’s reflect for a moment on the many graces that we receive when spending time with the Lord. We’d realize that so many times we allow trivial and secondary things fill up our lives. Why not see how your family life can
change for the better in the coming year?

goods, books, CD'S and videos. All items donated are cleaned and resold in Second Avenue Thrift Store. New items are

JESUS CHOSE TO COME TO THE WORLD AS PART OF A FAMILY
The family is the “great gift that the Lord
has given to the world ever since the beginning,
when he entrusted to Adam and Eve the mission
of multiplying and filling the earth; the gift that
Jesus confirmed and sealed in His Gospel,” said
the Holy Father during his Wednesday General
Audience on December 17. He was beginning a
new cycle of catecheses dedicated to the family,
which will continue throughout the coming year.
The proximity to Christmas illuminates
the mystery of the Incarnation of the Son of God,
which opens a new chapter in the universal history of man and woman. “And this new beginning
occurs within a family, in Nazareth. He could have
come spectacularly, or as a warrior, an emperor…
No – he came as the son of a family, in a family,” Pope Francis blows out the candles on a birthday cake celebrating his 78th birthday during a

he emphasized.
God chose to be born “in a human family, that He Himself had formed. He created this family in a remote village
in the outer reaches of the Roman Empire. Not in Rome, the capital of the Empire, not in a great city, but in an almost invisible and somewhat notorious periphery. This is even noted in the Gospel, almost as if it were a turn of phrase: 'Can anything good come out of Nazareth?'. Perhaps, in many parts of the world, we too still speak in this way when we hear the
name of certain peripheral areas of large cities. And yet, it was precisely there, in the outskirts of the great Empire, that
there began the most holy and good story of Jesus among mankind.”
“Jesus chose to remain in the periphery for thirty years, during which there is no mention of miracles or healing,
of preaching, of crowds who run after him. In Nazareth, everything seems to happen 'normally,' according to the habits of
a pious and hard-working family of Israelites. … The Gospels, in their sobriety, say nothing of Jesus' adolescence and leave
this task to our affectionate imaginings. Art, literature and music have followed the path of the imagination. Certainly, it is
not difficult to imagine how much mothers could learn from Mary's tender care for her Son! And how much fathers could
benefit from the example of Joseph, a righteous man, who dedicated his life to supporting and defending his wife and child
– is family – through difficult times. To say nothing of how much the young could be encouraged by the adolescent Jesus
in understanding the necessity and beauty of cultivating their deepest vocation, and of having great dreams,” he added.
“Every Christian family – as Mary and Joseph did – must first welcome Jesus, listen to Him, speak with Him, shelter Him, protect Him, grow with Him; and in this way, make the world better. Let us make space in our heart and in our
days for the Lord. This is what Mary and Joseph did, and it was not easy: how many difficulties they had to overcome! It
was not a false or unreal family. The family of Nazareth calls to us to rediscover the vocation and the mission of the family,
of every family. And so what happened in those thirty years in Nazareth can also happen to us: making love, not hate, normal; mutual help common, instead of indifference and hostility. It is not by chance that Nazareth means 'she who preserves', like Mary who, as the Gospel tells us, 'treasured all these things in her heart'. From then on, whenever there is a
family that preserves this mystery, even if it should be at the outer reaches of the world, the mystery of the Son of God is at
work. And He comes to save the world.”
At the end of the General Audience, Pope Francis asked for prayers for the victims of the inhuman terrorist acts
that have occurred recently in Yemen, Australia and Pakistan. “May the Lord receive the souls of the departed in His
peace, console their families and convert the hearts of the perpetrators, whose violence does not cease even before children.”
At the end of the audience, 2,500 people danced the milonga to the sound of the bandoneon in St. Peter's Square
to celebrate Pope Francis' 78th birthday. The initiative, “A tango for Francis,” emerged on the social networks and, as was
shown today, thousands of people joined in.

O dear Jesus, I implore You to grant Your special
graces to our family. May our home be the shrine of peace,
purity, love, labor and faith. I beg You, dear Jesus, to protect

O Mary, as loving Mother of Jesus our Mother too,
pray to your Son for our family, and for all families of the
world, to guard the cradle of the newborn, the schools of
the young and their vocations.
Blessed St. Joseph, holy guardian of Jesus and Mary,
assist us by your prayers in all the necessities of life. Ask of
Jesus that special grace which He granted to you, to watch
over our home at the pillow of the sick and the dying, so
that with Mary and with you, heaven may find our family
unbroken in the love of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Amen.

BEREAVEMENT MEETINGS
The Office of Family Life Ministries of the Archdiocese of Newark sponsors three support groups for Parents Grieving the
Death of a Child. Groups meet year ‘round on the first
Wednesday of each month at 7:30 PM (July and August at 7:00
PM) at St. Thomas the Apostle Parish Center, 60 Byrd Avenue,
Bloomfield, and on the third Monday of each month at St. Peter
the Apostle Parish Center, 445 Fifth Avenue, River Edge. The
Support Group for Fathers Who Have Lost a Child meets quarterly at Notre Dame Parish Center, 359 Central Avenue, North
Caldwell. There is no pre-registration for any of the groups, and
there is no fee. For further information about meeting times

THE SCHOLARSHIP FUND FOR INNER-CITY CHILDREN
The Scholarship Fund for Inner-City Children invites you to apply for a partial-tuition scholarship for your child for the
2015-2016 school year beginning January 1, 2015. Applications will be available by visiting our website at www.sficnj.org. Partial
-tuition scholarship are awarded based on financial need without regard to race, religion or ethnicity.
The deadline to submit your completed application is April 15, 2015.
Being a current scholarship recipient does not guarantee an automatic scholarship award for the 2015-2016 school year.
Current recipients as well as all new applicants must submit a completed application every year along with $30 application fee and
the required financial documentation. In addition, all previous financial award amounts are not guaranteed and can be changed
from year to year.

Te invita a jovenes de 14 a 17 años, hombre y mujer, que sean parte de
esta nueva forma de vivir, la valentia de se un buen hijo de Dios, de ser
un joven diferente, te ofrese: palabra de dios creciendo en fe, paseos,
recreacion, deportes, misiones y servicio a Dios, retiros espirituales, los
esperamos…. Jueves de 7:30 a 9 pm.

SOMOS LA SAGRADA FAMILIA DE DIOS
Las lecturas de Israel están repletas de
relatos de parejas estériles a quienes Dios les
concedió el milagro de tener hijos. Sin duda el
relato más conocido es el de la primera lectura
de hoy: Lucas se inspiró en este relato para
contar el milagroso nacimiento de Juan Bautista, hijo de Zacarías e Isabel, y el nacimiento
aun más milagroso de Jesús, hijo de María y
José. En ambos casos, vemos ejemplos o modelos a seguir de
personas que confiaron en Dios. Más que ser ejemplos de
personas que confiaron, son modelos de entrega incondicional de sí. Abandonaron sus propios preconceptos y prejuicios
sobre el funcionamiento del mundo y entregaron sus vidas a
creer en un Dios que puede hacer que haya vida en lugares en
donde era inconcebible que la hubiera; un Dios que puede
convertir la muerte en una vida nueva e inimaginable; un
Dios que puede, hoy, tomar a un niñito de padres humildes
en un pueblo insignificante y convertirlo en una luz para el
mundo entero. Esto es a lo que se nos llama a hacer cada día
como Sagrada Familia de Dios: confiar no sólo en nosotros
mismos y en la manera en que pensamos que deberían ser las
cosas, sino a abrirnos y entregarnos en fe a un Dios de promesa infinita.

Invitamos a toda la comunidad hispana, y muy
especialmente a la comunidad Dominicana a
unirse al Triduo y Misa
que celebraremos en
honor a la Protectora de
la Republica Dominicana, La Virgen de la Altagracia. Iniciaremos con
el Triduo del Santo Rosario desde el Jueves 22
de Enero hasta el Sábado
24 de Enero a las 7:00
pm en la Casa de Retiros (Antiguo Convento). También
les invitamos a participar en la Santa Misa en su honor la
cual será celebrada el Domingo 25 de enero a la 1:00 pm.
Luego de la misa, ese día tendremos un compartir en la
cafetería de la escuela St. Peter con comida típica dominicana. Si desean donar algún plato o colaborar de alguna

para que todos honremos a nuestra Virgen de la Altagracia. Les esperamos a todos.
