150 YEARS WINTER TOURISM
This winter St. Moritz and the Engadine celebrate 150 years
winter tourism. It all began with a bet in autumn 1864.
Johannes Badrutt did bet with four English guests that even
in winter they would be able to enjoy the mild Engadine
sunshine short-sleeved on the terrace; if not, he would
reimburse their travel costs from London to St. Moritz and
back again. So they came back to the Upper Engadine for
Christmas – and stayed until Easter, when they returned
home sun-tanned, relaxed and happy.
Thus, the original winter tourism in St. Moritz was born.

Many events throughout the season will be held in the name
of the anniversary like the "Light and Snow" spectacle by
Gerry Hoffstetter, the Omega Monobob Historic Race or the
Open Fire Conversations with long-established personalities
from the Engadine.

ANGELA HARTNETT AT THE

The Carlton Hotel St. Moritz invites you during the Gourmet
Festival to taste the creatively delicious meals prepared by
the British chef Angela Hartnett. Thanks to her refined and
star-level Cucina Italiana, she is one of the most popular chefs
of her country. Angela’s passion for food was instilled in her
from a young age by her Italian mother and grandmother. Time
spent in kitchens of the Zafferano and the L'Oranger as well
as Gordon Ramsay's Aubergine and Petrus only increased this
enthusiasm, and she became head chef at Petrus within seven
short months, helping the restaurant to achieve a Michelin star.
Going on to launch Gordon Ramsay's Amaryllis in Scotland,
Verre in Dubai and Cielo in Florida plus The Grill and MENU
at the London hotel The Connaught. Since then Angela has
opened her own Michelin-starred restaurant the Murano in
London’s Mayfair, where she is chef proprietor. She has made
numerous TV appearances, including the Great British Menu,
as a guest judge on The Taste and guest presenter at Saturday
Kitchen. She has two cookbooks to her name, Cucina (2007)
and Angela’s Kitchen (2011) and is a consulting chef at the
Lime Wood Hotel, Hampshire.
