All hype and partying aside, New
Year’s has always been seen as an
opportunity to make a fresh start. It
depends on personal experience of
course, but some years we are more
enthusiastic than others to raise a glass
and say, “out with the old, and in with the
new!” Because New Year’s is so symbolic of new beginnings, the day upon
which it is celebrated has varied widely
for various reasons, and in different
times and different cultures.
New Year’s celebrations, like so
many religious and cultural traditions,
have their earliest roots in pagan rituals.
One of the earliest New Year’s celebrations 4000 years ago was the festival of
Akitu during ancient Babylonian times.
Spring is a time for the renewal of all life,
so it was fitting that this festival should
happen during the spring or vernal
equinox.
There is also the question of the
calendar. A couple thousand years ago,
the world measured time according to
the early Roman lunar calendar. As the
time between new moons averages only
29.5 days, this calendar consisted of a
total of only 304 days. That meant that
there were 57 days at the end of
December, and before the beginning of
March, that were not allocated to any
particular month.
In 46 BCE, Julius Ceasar would
introduce a reform to the early Roman
calendar in which two more months
were added, January and February,
which were to precede the other ten.
The month of January was named after
the pagan God Janus. He was the god
of gates, doors, and new beginnings. He
had two faces, one looking forward to
the future and the other looking back to
the past. Soon after this reform, however, Julius Ceasar was murdered. On
January 1st of 42 BCE, the Roman Senate voted to deify him in honor of his life,
as well as his institution of the new rationalized calendar.

This new calendar, which would
come to be known as the Julian calendar, would remain the predominant calendar of the Roman empire for over a
century and a half. This included most of
Europe, and even extended to the new
European settlements in the Americas.
The Julian calendar, unlike the early
Roman lunar one, was meant to approximate the tropical solar year, the length
of time between one summer solstice to
the next. It is therefore 12 months, or
approximately 365.25 days long.
It was not until 1582 that Pope Gregory XIII would introduce his reforms to
the Julian calendar. The motivation
behind these reforms was concerning
the dates for Easter, rather than New
Year’s. The Church of Alexandria celebrated Easter 14 days after the new
moon which follows the spring equinox.
This meant that Easter could vary anywhere between the 22nd of March and
the 25th of April. The Church of Rome
used a different cycle to compute the
day of the moon, and still regarded the
25th of March as the spring equinox. In
any case, they would not allow Easter to
be celebrated any later than the 21st of
April, as this was the Day of Parilla, the
birthday of Rome and an important
pagan celebration.
Invariably, the two systems clashed
producing different dates, and there had
to be an official compromise to allow
both churches to celebrate their religious occasions on the same day. Even
worse was that the way the moon was
used to compute Easter in the Julian
calendar built up an error of one day
every 310 years. By the 16th century
Gregorian reforms, the calendar was out
of sync with the phases of the real
moon by 4 days! The Gregorian calendar, the one for all of Christendom which
survives to the present day, is a solar
one just like the Julian calendar. The
New Year begins January the 1st. The
main difference? It is 365.2425 days
long. It also has a leap year every four
years, but omits a leap day every 300
years, unlike the Julian calendar which
retained them.

There are thousands of
occupations in Canada.
When you're using online

samples of occupations,

best way to explore an
occupation is to talk to
people in that field. They
can tell you about related
roles, opportunities in
other industry sectors and
emerging options that you
probably won’t learn about
from any other source.
Think sectors, not
specifics.
Work roles change
every day. What remains
relatively constant in the
world of work is industry

When you’re exploring
options, it's a good idea to
focus on industry sectors
rather than on specific
occupations. Get a feel for
sectors that interest you.
Think logistics, a huge sector that includes almost
anything to do with the
movement of goods from

In a world of rapid
change, the work you do
