ECD, or Early Childhood Development mapping, has determined that for various reasons Lethbridge in particular is a hotspot for childhood developmental delay. This makes Family Center’s community role all the more critical. They are not a day care or an agency which otherwise just fills in the holes for the families in question. They are there to support the supporter. They help the caregiver help the child by enhancing that person’s ability to provide their child with the richest most nurturing environment possible. This is done by making sure that adults’ challenges don’t get in the way. However, because they are concerned that their programs and services should be available to everyone, they can also provide childcare, transportation or finances. Towards this end some of the other services they provide are free parenting classes, and free counselling right at the center. Everyone at the Family Center knows what they are doing. They're not just people with big hearts, they are all trained professionals. The Center itself received COA Accreditation and is recognized as a Government of Alberta Parent Link Center. According to Alberta’s Ministry guidelines this denotes centers of excellence. Family Center is also an Alberta’s Promise Agency. Information, training, counselling, and excellence are obviously very important, but Family Center also recognizes that not one agency can do it all by themselves. For this reason referral is also a core service provided by the Center. Peter Imhof, the Family Center’s Executive Director, assured me that in Lethbridge the division of labor is actually quite clear, and that referral is a strong suit of our community. In other words, if Family Center can’t handle the problem, there is no problem getting caregivers referred to someone who can. The Family Center also believes in helping people right where they are. For this reason they also have contracts and satellites in Magrath, Taber, and the Crowsnest Pass. Lethbridge Meet Priscilla Peltier Ecars & Trucks Sales By Paul Straat Save the date: March 19th, 2015, 5:30 p.m. at the Coast Lethbridge Hotel and Conference Center. This will be the night of the 2nd Annual Lethbridge Family Center Charity Gala and Auction. Way back in 1994, two Lethbridge organizations merged, namely Family and Community Development and Parents’ Place, to become The Lethbridge Family Center. In 2010 they moved from their location in an historic downtown building to the roomier and brighter location they now occupy on the second floor of the Lethbridge Center office tower. Family Center’s guiding principle has always been to promote family wellness, mainly from the standpoint of prevention, taking into accounting the interdependent nature of family relationships. Society has changed much since 1994, and this has also had an impact on the very definition of what constitutes a family. The Family Center recognizes this and understands that all families deserve support. They therefore promote relationships which respect the new and diverse modern spectrum. The idea is that healthy children grow up in healthy families, and this in turn builds healthy communities. Their work concentrates on families, parents, and caregivers in Southern Alberta, primarily concerning children under the age of 6. Because this is the time when a child’s brain is developing most rapidly, this particular age is perhaps the most critical time to intervene for the sake of successfully counterbalancing any difficulties or challenges a child may be facing. This is the age when children begin to learn language, gross and fine motor skills, basic social skills, and they begin to develop emotionally. It is the time when children become able to learn and follow the directions of adults, but it is also when they begin to learn how to self-regulate their own emotions and behaviors. For example, whether they fail at a task or succeed, their ability to self-regulate will determine whether or not they spend the rest of the day acting out, moping in a corner, or WED, MARCH 11 to FRI, MARCH 13 1 P.M. Family Center's downtown location in the Tower is a warm, welcoming, colorful place where children are immediately enticed into playing with the indoor sand tray, the water table, or the slide. They are encouraged to ask questions, and it’s okay to make mistakes. Family Center and their clients have enjoyed this location for almost five years. On Lethbridge’s west side, how- ever, there has been extremely rapid growth before and during that same time period. With the young familybased demographic this has produced, there is still no support facility for families on the west side. Family Center is the first agency to want to offer such support services there, and they would be based out of the new Copperwood Elementary school site in School District #51. If the Gospel had come in power among the mass of the people, the worship of this goddess-queen would have been overthrown. With the generality it came only in name. Instead, therefore, of the Babylonian goddess being cast out, in too many cases her name only was changed. She was called the Virgin Mary, and, with her child, was worshipped with the same idolatrous feeling by professing Christians, as formerly by open and avowed Pagans. The consequence was, that when, in A.D. 325, the Nicene Council was summoned to condemn the heresy of Arius, who denied the true divinity of Christ, that heresy indeed was condemned, but not without the help of men who gave distinct indications of a desire to put the creature on a level with the Creator, to set the Virgin-mother side by side with her Son. At the Council of Nice, says the author of “Nimrod,” “The Melchite section” – that is, the representatives of the socalled Christianity of Egypt – “held that there were three persons in the Trinity – the Father, the Virgin Mary, and Messiah their Son.” In regard to the Pagan character of the mass, we have seen not little already. But there is something, yet to be considered, in which the working of the mystery of iniquity will still further appear. There are letters on the wafer that are worth reading. These letters are I.H.S. What mean these mystical letters? To a Christian these letters are represented as signifying,“Iesus Hominum Salvator,”“Jesus the Saviour of men.” But let a Roman worshipper of Isis (for in the age of the emperors there were innumerable worshippers of Isis in Rome) cast his eyes upon them, and how will he read them? He will read them, of course, according to his own well-known system of idolatry: “Isis, Horus, Seb,” that is, “The Mother, the Child, and the Father of the gods,” – in other words, “The Egyptian Trinity.” Can the reader imagine that this double sense is accidental? Surely not. MIKE’S METAL RECYCLING: Free pick up of the following items - Used appliances, electronics & scrap metal. As well as Unwanted cars, trucks & related parts, Will pay for some vehicles. Employee time lost to health issues costs businesses millions each year. For businesses, helping workers stay healthy costs far less than the financial impact of having them miss work for illness or injury. With cold and flu season in full swing, HR directors and other business leaders should take steps to help employees stay healthy and on the job. Here are seven steps your small company can take to help reduce worker absenteeism: 1. Encourage healthful habits. Simple factors such as getting enough sleep and frequent hand washing can go a long way toward keeping people healthy. While you can't make workers get seven to eight hours of sleep, you can spread the word on how it's done. Key tricks? Turn off the electronic devices an hour before bedtime, avoid caffeine and alcohol, and go to bed at the same time every night. Employers can more directly encourage other healthful habits, such as hygiene. Create mini-health stations throughout the office and include hand sanitizer, fresh tissues and a covered receptacle nearby. Post signs with proper hand-washing guidelines in company restrooms. You can promote a healthy diet by providing healthful options such as trail mix and water in vending machines. Distribute healthy recipes (try the spaghetti squash!). 2. Provide 24/7 support through a wellness program. Businesses that offer employee wellness programs like the health and wellness solutions provided by Provant can lower their medical costs and offer a spectrum of additional benefits, including reduced absenteeism. Customized workplace wellness programs give employees round-theclock access to valuable information, health professionals and advice, live or via Stress is part of having a job, but you can help workers stay healthy and be more productive by helping them manage that stress. Give them chances to get up from their desk - how about making that next meeting a walking one? Offer a technology, that can help them stay healthy. Plus, these programs can help employees manage diseases, assess their health and set personal wellness goals. 3. Reward well-being actions. Sometimes inertia is all that stands between employees and improved health. You can inspire employees to be healthier by offering, say, an exercise class at lunch. Provant health incentive programs for healthful habits have seen marked increases in engagement and significant health risk migration for those rewarded for their healthy choices. 4. De-stress the workplace workshop on relaxation techniques, and make sure your health plan offers an Employee Assistance Program for mental health help. Have a de-stress zone in the office. 5. Provide auxiliary benefits. Auxiliary benefits such as dental or vision coverage support employees' overall health maintenance and value-adds such as partnerships with local farms for vegetables, dry-cleaning drop-off service, and onsite fitness classes create a convenience factor that encourages healthy engagement. In addition to supporting employee health, they are a low-cost way to round out a benefits package without increasing monthly premium costs. 6. Tell them to stay home. Despite their best efforts, employees will get sick. When that happens, it may be best to encourage them to stay home. Workers suffering with a virus like the flu or a bad cold could spread the illness throughout the office if they come to work when sick. And those with non-communicable illness or injuries may extend the total amount of time they miss from work if they push themselves to return too soon or don't take the time they need to make a full recovery. 7. The obvious - Get a flu shot. Sometimes the answer is right under your nose. Make it easy to get flu shots. You can even bring nurses right to your workplace or offer a remote flu program, making it convenient for individuals to get vaccinated. Being called a 'tech geek' is now a compliment (BPT) - Are you the family member or friend who is always called when someone's computer breaks or starts acting up? Do you have a person on speed dial whenever you need a website created or program updated? The old stereotype of a computer geek who's always wearing a pocket protector and glasses with tapedtogether frames is quickly becoming a thing of the past. These days, men and women who are able to speak "tech" and fix those pesky computer programs are in high demand, both professionally and among friends and family. One reason is that more than 80 percent of households have a computer. When those computers don't work, who are you going to call? When someone calls a person a tech geek these days, it's meant to be a compliment. Are you single and trying to promote yourself on dating sites? You might want to advertise that you're a tech geek. One in three women say they prefer their significant other be tech savvy. People recognize how prevalent tech has become in everyday life. These findings demonstrate that society has warmed to people who are the most capable at fixing and improving the devices we rely on, both in our personal and professional lives. It's not just that people want to be friends with tech geeks - they want to become one themselves, the survey found. A majority of men and women are interested in improving their personal tech savviness, even if it's so they don't have to constantly bug a friend for help. And while the percentage of people who claim to be tech savvy is heavily male, a significant number of women are showing interest, too, making the term tech geek more gender neutral. There's a good chance you have a tech-geek friend, both in your personal life and at the office. In fact, you might have several at the office. Most industries these days rely on technology to survive, and survey respondents say job candidates with tech skills have a stronger resume than those who don't. Having a strong list of tech geeks handy is important if you are not one yourself. So the next time someone is introduced to you as being a tech geek, be sure to get his or her number! And if you can call yourself a tech geek, wear the title like a badge of honor - and depending on how popular you want to be, protect your cellphone number! Cook until al dente; drain. 6. Meanwhile, add artichokes and capers to reduced chicken broth, and cook until it's heated through. Turn off heat, and gently swirl in butter. Cover, and keep heated. Just before serving, stir parsley into sauce. 7. Stir sauce into drained pasta, and divide it between 4 plates. Top with chicken cutlets and serve immediately. ~www.popsugar.com Julia Child’s Boeuf Bourginon Ingredients 6 ounces bacon, solid chunk 1 tbsp olive oil 3 lbs lean stewing beef, cut into 2inch cubes 1 carrot, peeled and sliced 1 onion, peeled and sliced 1 tsp salt ¼ tsp pepper, freshly ground 2 tbsp flour 3 cups red wine 2-3 cups beef stock 1 tbsp tomato paste 2 garlic cloves, mashed 1 sprig thyme 1 bay leaf For the braised onions: 18-24 white pearl onions, peeled 1 ½ tbsp unsalted butter 1 ½ tbsp olive oil ½ cup beef stock salt & fresh ground pepper 1 bay leaf 1 sprig thyme 2 sprigs parsley For the sautéed mushrooms: 1 lb mushroom, quartered 2 tbsp unsalted butter 1 tbsp olive oil Directions 1. First prepare the bacon: cut off the rind and reserve. Cut the bacon into lardons about 1/4" think and 1 1/2" long. 2. Simmer the rind and the lardons for ten minutes in 1 1/2 quarts of water. Drain and dry the lardons and rind and reserve. Pre-heat the oven to 450°F. 3. Put the tablespoon of olive oil in a large (9" - 10" wide, 3" deep) fireproof casserole and warm over moderate heat. Sauté the lardons for 2 to 3 minutes to brown lightly. Remove to a side dish with a slotted spoon. 4. Dry off the pieces of beef and sauté them, a few at a time in the hot oil/bacon fat until nicely browned on all sides. Once browned, remove to the side plate with the bacon. 5. In the same oil/fat, sauté the onion and the carrot until softened. Pour off the fat and return the lardons and the beef to the casserole with the carrots and onion. 6. Toss the contents of the casserole with the salt and pepper and sprinkle with the flour. Set the uncovered casserole in the oven for four minutes. 7. Toss the contents of the casserole again and return to the hot oven for 4 more minutes. Now, lower the heat to 325°F and remove the casserole from the oven. 8. Add the wine and enough stock so that the meat is barely covered. Add wet ingredients Add the tomato paste, garlic and herbs and the bacon rind. Bring to a simmer on the top of the stove. 9. Cover and place in the oven, adjusting the heat so that the liquid simmers very slowly for three to four hours. The meat is done when a fork pierces it easily. 10. While the meat is cooking, prepare the onions and mushrooms and set them aside till needed. Heat the butter and oil in a large skillet and add the onions to the skillet. Sauté over medium heat for about ten minutes, rolling the onions about so they brown as evenly as possible, without breaking apart. 11. Pour in the stock, season to taste, add the herbs, and cover. Simmer over low heat for about 40 to 50 minutes until the onions are perfectly tender but retain their shape and the liquid has mostly evaporated. Remove the herbs and set the onions aside. 12. For the mushrooms, heat the butter and oil over high heat in a large skillet. As soon as the foam begins to subside add the mushrooms and toss and shake the pan for about five minutes. As soon as they have browned lightly, remove from heat. 13. To Finish the Stew: when the meat is tender, remover the casserole from the oven and empty its contents into a sieve set over a saucepan. Wash out the casserole and return the beef and bacon to it (discarding the bits of carrot and onion and herbs which remain in the sieve). 14. Distribute the mushrooms and onions over the meat. Skim the fat off the sauce and simmer it for a minute or two, skimming off any additional fat which rises to the surface. You should be left with about 2 1/2 cups of sauce thick enough to coat a spoon lightly. If the sauce is too thick, add a few tablespoons of stock. If the sauce is too thin, boil it down to reduce to the right consistency. 15. Taste for seasoning. Pour the sauce over the meat and vegetables. If you are serving immediately, place the covered casserole over medium low heat and simmer 2 to 3 minutes. 16. Serve in the casserole or on a warm platter surrounded by noodles, potatoes or rice and garnished with fresh parsley. If serving later or the next day, allow the casserole to cool and place cold, covered casserole in the refrigerator. 20 minutes prior to serving, place over medium low heat and simmer very slowly for ten minutes, occasionally basting the meat and vegetables with the sauce. ~www.empireonline.com Visit The Ultimate Classified Website At www.shoppergroup.com THE LETHBRIDGE SHOPPER, Week of February 28, 2015, Page 11 Kidney March is Bay 1&2 - 2801 2nd Ave. N. Supports Kidney Awareness Month and the Kidney Foundation of Canada It’s time to learn about kidney disease March is National Kidney Month in Canada and although there are more than 30,000 Canadians who are currently being treated for kidney failure, most people have never heard of kidney disease until it affects them, or someone they care about. Why are kidneys so important? Our kidneys regulate water. For the body to work properly, it must contain just the right amount of water. One of the important jobs of the kidneys is to remove excess water from the body or to retain water when the body needs more. Our kidneys also remove wastes. Many of the substances in the blood and body fluid must be kept at the correct level for the body to function properly. Healthy kidneys excrete excess minerals, such as sodium and potassium, from the body in the urine and they also help to regulate the levels of other minerals, such as calcium and phosphate. Another important task performed by our kidneys is that of producing hormones. These hormones circulate in the bloodstream and regulate some body functions such as blood pressure, the making of red blood cells, and the uptake of calcium from the intestine. What is kidney disease? Kidney disease describes a variety of disease and disorders that affect the kidneys. Most disease of the kidneys attack the filtering units of the kidneys (the nephrons) and damage their ability to eliminate wastes and excess fluids. This March, during National Kidney Month, take the time to learn more about your kidneys and kidney disease. Visit the Kidney Foundation of Canada’s Web site at www.kidney.ca.
