ALBERTA 2015 55 PLUS WINTER GAMES
WELCOMES OVER 2,000 PARTICIPANTS
By Paul Straat
Baby boomers is the term used to
describe the bumper crop of babies born
in the period immediately after the Second World War to about the mid ‘60s. If,
like me, you are a part of this demographic, you are anywhere between your early
fifties to your late seventies. Different individuals, groups, and organizations all have
their own ideas about what defines a
baby boomer culturally and ideologically.
It is admittedly difficult to ascribe specific
characteristics to an entire generation.
However, certain general traits have
become almost synonymous with this
particular group.
In Europe and North America,
boomers have become generally associated with a higher degree of privilege relative to previous generations. Having
grown up in a time of post-war prosperity, we have had access to post-war housing and education, all of which have
resulted in more comfort, affluence, and
better health than our predecessors. As a
group, it is also undeniable that we
boomers also represent a significant
break from, if not a complete redefinition
of, traditional values. For one thing, this
generation’s expectations of their retirement years is completely different. Higher
expectations and greater optimism continuing into retirement, as well as having
financial access to so-called mid-life crisis
products, has sometimes lead to the criticism of being the generation with the
greatest level of consumerism.
This may be true. But, we were also
the first generation that truly expected
life to get better as time went on, and
maybe also the first generation that had
not only the wherewithal, but also the
time and the desire to make it happen. Far
from being a sedentary bunch of grandpas and grandmas, this group is committed to enjoying the best that life has to
offer, for as long as it is possible to do so.

Unexpected Job Loss?
Life expectancies increased greatly for
this generation, both as a cause and an
effect of their particular circumstances,
and many people 50 and older believe
their best years are still ahead of them.
They expect to remain physically fit so
they can continue to participate in the
activities that they love.
Given the inherent physical, emotional, psychological, intellectual, and
social benefits for people in their 50s and
over of pursuing active lifestyles, it only
makes sense to support that in every way
we can. The Lethbridge 2015 Alberta 55
Plus Winter Games Society wants to
showcase local groups that share a commitment to active and healthy lifestyles
by inviting them to participate in a multigenerational torch relay that kicks off the
beginning of the Games, which are being
hosted here in Lethbridge from February
19-22. According to our Deputy Mayor,
Bridget Mearns, just the fact that Lethbridge has been selected as a host city for
the games says so much in itself about
the enthusiasm and commitment of our
local volunteer and sporting communities. She also says that “our citizens have
demonstrated time and time again that
they have what it takes to make this event
a success”.
The games enhance community spirit by bringing together Albertans aged 55
and over. They also provide a venue for
them to pursue greater levels of physical,
social, intellectual and creative achievement through friendly competition and
participation. Lea Switzer, the chairperson
for the Lethbridge games, says:“Children,
parents and grandparents are coming
together to participate, support and
cheer each other on in their various activities. We really want to celebrate that with
our All-Ages Torch Relay.”
Three-generational groups are invited to share their active living and healthy
lifestyle stories on the games Facebook
page at facebook.com/2015Lethbridge.
Up to 20 multi-generational groups will
be chosen as torch bearers at the 2015
Alberta 55 Plus Winter Games Torch Relay
on February 18, 2015, and be honoured at
the Games Opening Ceremonies on February 19.“The torch relay brings such significance and is a big part of the games.

HEB 10:14
-KJ- “For by one offering he hath perfected forever them that are
sanctified”
HEB 10:10
“By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of
Jesus Christ once for all.”
It’s pretty clear, one sacrifice offered ONCE back there at Calvary
in 33 A.D. Jesus at that time, by the offering of himself – perfected
forever – them that are sanctified.
Watch out now! Someone is going to throw mud into the water.
-NKJB- “For by one offering He has perfected forever (watch it now)
those that are being sanctified.”
Being sanctified? That’s present tense, an action that is happening
now. That’s also un-scriptural. Who is being sanctified and who is
doing the sanctifying? It can’t be Christ because he said he did it
ONCE! Well if that is so and it is, then what are they trying to make
this verse say?
Well let me give you a few scenario’s and you tell me what they are
trying to imply.
In order to be continually “being sanctified” – that’s what it said.
Wouldn’t that require a continuing sacrifice? An ongoing sacrifice like
the Roman Catholic church has going on with the Holy Eucharist?
I also remember my church history where a certain Church would
burn you at the stake and then try to get you to recant whatever. But
at that time when asked what the priest were doing to those poor
people? The priest would say “Oh!, They are being sanctified.”
After this, do some of you really think we’re reading a King James
Bible? Or something that crawled out of the dark ages and is
masquerading as something new.

The Alberta 2015 55 Plus Winter games will be welcoming over
2000 participants in a total of 14
events, along with their supporters
and fans in Lethbridge. The Games’
theme, Warm Your Heart, encompasses everything organizers are
hoping the games will be: friendly
competition, sportsmanship, community spirit, and above all, fun. But
that doesn’t happen all on its own.
It’s taken generous community and
corporate sponsorship and the over
530 volunteers already signed up to
make the games become a reality.
There are still 50 positions left to fill,
however. For anyone not yet
signed up, you may still do so at the
Games office located at #501, 817 –
4 Ave S up until February 17. The
greatest need is for ambassadors
and luggage handlers, says Volunteer Co-Director Michelle Day. All
volunteers will be invited to an
appreciation dinner on February 22
with entertainment featuring
Trevor Panczak.
In addition to volunteering,
area residents can take part in the
Games by attending any of the ceremonial activities. The ATCO Gas AllAges Torch Relay on Feb 18, the
ATCO Gas Opening Ceremonies on
Feb 19, and the Closing Ceremonies
on Feb 22 are all open to the public.
“The stage entertainment at the
ceremonies will have something for
everyone,” says Switzer. “The Taiko
Drum Group, the Rocky Mountain
Cloggers and the Troyanda Ukrainian Dancers are just some of the
confirmed entertainers.”

Fun ways to be a fit family
(MS) Obesity is a global epidemic
affecting people of all ages. According
to Statistics Canada notes about 25 percent of Canadians are obese. Being overweight or obese has been linked to cardiovascular disease, diabetes and some
forms of cancer, and children who are
overweight are likely to be overweight
or obese adults.
While eating a diet that is low in fat
and high in whole-grain fiber, vegetables and lean proteins is important,
exercise remains one of the key factors
in maintaining a healthy weight. However, many adults and children simply do
not get enough exercise during the day.
An active lifestyle is often hampered by the prevalence of digital
devices or sedentary jobs that encourage more screen time than fitness time.
But there are ways for the entire family
to get fit. Exercising together is not just
a great way for families to get healthy,
but also a great opportunity to spend
time together. The following are a handful of ways families can work together to
incorporate more exercise into their
daily lives.
Tackle chores. Yes, tasks around
the house can count as exercise. Working together not only gets you moving
but also cuts down on the time it takes
to tackle tasks around the house. Mowing the lawn, vacuuming the rugs,
sweeping the floor -- all of these activities can get the heart pumping. Make it
fun by setting chores to music or competing against one another to see who
gets their task done first or the best.
Compete in the pool. Swimming is
a low-impact activity that works many
muscles in the body. Taking a dip in the
pool can be both relaxing and beneficial
to your health. Compete with family
members to make the most of the time
spent in the water. Host relay swimming
races, see how long each member of the
family can tread water or create any
other competitions that keep everyone
in the pool moving.
Create an outdoor obstacle
course. Set up a series of obstacles in
your yard and host your own triathlon.
You can jump through tires, climb
Serious Toys for Big Boys
through tubes and scale trees. Make it
fun by having adults try to ride tricycles
or pair up an adult with a child for sack
races. The opportunities for fun are only
hampered by your imagination.
Go for family bicycle rides. Traverse your neighborhood or blaze new
trails by riding bikes together. Young
children can be strapped into trailers
that are pulled behind the bike or ride in
seats attached to the bike itself. This
gives everyone a chance to enjoy the
great outdoors and hone their cycling
skills.
Go hiking. Hiking is another fun
family activity that also happens to
make for great exercise. Choose a trail
that may not be level and push everyone's endurance to the test.
Hit the dance floor. If you've been
invited to a wedding or a Sweet 16
party, cut a rug and take advantage of
the DJ and dance floor. When enjoying
yourselves, you probably won't even
realize how much you're exercising.

A Promotion - Is it the Right Move for You?
You've just been
offered a promotion—
congratulations! While
it can be exciting,
career boosting and
financially rewarding, a
promotion is also a
new job. As with any
new job offer, it’s a
good idea to consider a
promotion carefully
before you accept it or
turn it down. Answering the following questions will help you
decide whether a promotion is the right
move for you.
Does the promotion fit your career
plans?
This is one of the
most important factors
to consider. If the promotion is in sync with
your career goals, it’s
likely a good opportunity for you. Here are
some additional questions to think about:
• Will the promotion give you the
chance to do work you
really want to do?
• Does the new
position reflect your
values, interests and
abilities?
• Will the promotion be a step up from
your current job? If not,
will it open up opportunities for future
growth or advancement?
Can you meet
your new responsibilities with your current skills?
Find
out
the
requirements of the
new position and compare them to your current skills:
• What skills and
knowledge do you
need to develop in
order to do the job
effectively?
• Will your employer provide the necessary resources for you
to learn the skills and
knowledge required
for your new role?
• Will you be
offered support and
coaching during the
transition?

this week. A direct approach may just provide you the
unique perspective you need to crack this nut.

Taurus, state your case carefully when you attempt to get
your point across at work. Others will appreciate your
thoughtful approach and respond positively.
GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21
Gemini, you are up to your ears in work and you can't see
the light at the end of the tunnel just yet. Rest assured that
it's there, but it could take a few more days in the trenches.

Various responsibilities require your full attention this
week, Cancer. Don't be afraid to accept some help so you
can get everything done on time.
LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23

you are inspired by your gusto. Make the most of your
energy and help others harness theirs if given the chance.

Virgo, you work best when you have a plan in place. While
you are not usually appreciative of surprises, this week you
are willing to be a little more flexible.

news is on the horizon. Allow others around you to share in

your plate in the days ahead, but it's nothing you can't
