The Face of the Christ Child
“It is your face, O Lord, that I seek; hide not your face from me” (Ps 27:8-9).
The opening chapters of the Gospels according to Matthew and Luke bring us cast of holy
people who were seeking the face of God: above all, Mary and Joseph. God did not hide his
face from them. The Baby they took in their arms showed them nothing less than the human
face of God. For that unique couple, Mary and Joseph, the prayer of the psalmist came true.
They were the first humans to gaze upon the face of the incarnate Son of God. When his eyes
opened and he began to smile upon them, they knew the first appearance on earth of the very
glory of God.
Matthew and Luke tell us of others who also looked upon the face of the Christ Child and
found great joy in experiencing that grace: the shepherds, the wise men from the East, Simeon
and Anna.
They stood in for all of us who walk in darkness and live in deep shadows. We too have seen a
great light on the face of the Baby in Mary’s arms. That child had been born for us and that son
has been given to us so that his face might shine upon us. This child had come to scatter
darkness, to fill all human hearts with happiness, and to light up faces everywhere. His coming
was and remains forever news of very great joy to be shared by all peoples.

Blessed are you who take time to listen to difficult speech — For you help us
know that if we persevere, we can be understood.
Blessed are you who walk with us in public places and ignore the stares of
strangers — For in your companionship, we find havens of relaxation.
Blessed are you who never bid us ‘hurry up’ and more blessed, you who do not
snatch our tasks from our hands to do them for us — For often we need time
rather than help.
Blessed are you who ask us for help — For our greatest need is to be needed.
Blessed are you when, by all these things you assure us that the thing that
makes us individuals is not in our peculiar muscles, not in our wounded
nervous systems, not in our difficulties in learning—But in the God-given self
which no infirmity can confine.
OUR MISSION PRAYER
We, the St Ignatius community, are called to live the good news.
We pray that we become the people that Jesus Christ called us to be.
We pray that we know the Father, by the power of the Holy Spirit
through knowing Jesus in prayer, scripture and liturgy.
We pray that we give hope to others by a practical, personal kindness,
affirming each person's dignity, worth and destiny in Christ. May we live
out this mission of our Christian vocation in the spirit of St. Ignatius.
