First he has to go through that mental anguish of wondering whether his beloved Mary has betrayed him. Then in his spiritual care he decides not to betray her. It is only after that that an angel re-assures Joseph that God has special plans for him. But then the angels do not leave him alone. Next he has to take the child and his mother to Egypt where he is told to wait until he is called. Finally he is called out of Egypt. But then there is a slight variation in the itinerary. It is to Nazareth that he is directed. You will note that in the cartoons Joseph says nothing. In fact we have no words of Joseph at all in the Holy Scripture. He is in silent submission. © J. C.
