MESSIAH ®Ý ‘ÊîĦ
®Ä T«Ù›› W››»Ý!
Our Advent Prayer Service will once again be
followed by the Christmas portion of Handel’s
“Messiah” on Sunday, December, 7th beginning at
5 PM. Our guest singers will be accompanied on
our historic pipe organ.
Reception to follow. Please sign up to bring
refreshments to share.
Dear Parishioners,
We are coming into the Christmas Season and
your Parish has many plans for you.
We are starting off on December 7th at
5:00 PM, with a Vigil Service of the Immaculate
Conception, followed by the Christmas
portion of Handel's Messiah.
Then the following day we celebrate the
Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of Mary
at 12:15 p.m.
For those old enough to remember these days
recall the beginning of World War II. Yes it is a time
of remembrance as well as a time of celebration.
Come and join your fellow parishioners in these
solemn and sacred moments.
THE PARABLE OF THE TALENTS
SOME GUY: WHY DO
YOU ALWAYS PICTURE
GOD AS A MEAN AND
DEMANDING MONSTER?
JESUS: THAT’S NOT SO. MOST
OF MY STORIES SHOW MY FATHER AS MERCIFUL AND FORGIVING.
BUT THERE ARE JUST SOME TIMES THAT
I HAVE TO SHOW THAT HE MAKES DEMANDS ON PEOPLE AND CALLS THEM TO
ACCOUNTABILITY.
© JCM, 2014
THE PARABLE OF THE TALENTS
It is the old parable of the talents. A talent was a large coin
usually about the size of a dish made of silver or gold and of a
high value, often used for real estate exchanges. And in the
story you see that the business executive really lambastes the
tenant. Just look at the words he uses: “You wicked lazy servant. You knew that I harvest where I did not plant. And gather
where I did not scatter. Should you not then have put my
money in the bank? So that I could have got it back with interest on my return.”
Once again, it is that attention getting story teller at work.
And you can bet your boots that Jesus had his disciples
wrapped in attention. They were probably asking: where is he
going with this. And in so many Bible stories we hear God
presented as the merciful and forgiving God. Well. This is one
of those stories where Jesus presents God as the demanding
God. And what more effective image of the demanding God
can be that of the shrewd investor?
Well of course we have to do some adjustments to ask:
What is Jesus really saying? Well first we take that word
“talent”. In the Bible days it meant a large coin of high value.
By popular usage it has come to mean a skill or ability. In the
original context to mis-use a talent meant to make a poor investment. In present day usage it means to fail to use a skill or
ability. Hence: he or she is wasting his or her talents.
But there is so much more to the story. You notice that the
land lord gives the hardest time to the guy who only got the
one talent. I guess the lesson is that no matter how much or
HOW LITTLE we are given. There is a certain accountability
between a person and God.
