The Holy

Jesus, Mary,
and Joseph
A NOTE FROM FATHER KEVIN
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
+ Pax et Bonum!
Today we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family—Jesus, Mary, and Joseph! This Feast
Day that is always celebrated on the Sunday after Christmas, always falls within the Octave of
Christmas. The Octave of Christmas is the eight-day celebration of Christmas, where each of
the eight days is celebrated as Christmas Day. The Octave of Christmas ends this coming Thursday, January 1, and
then we are in the season of Christmas until the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, which this year falls on Sunday,
January 11. Clearly, we’ve got a lot of celebrating to do in the next couple of weeks as Church! To do that today, we
welcome all of our guests and visitors who are joining us for Mass this weekend.
The Feast of the Holy Family reminds all of us as Church, that our family relationships are extremely important. It
truly is the basic building block of our society and culture. Our relationships are important. We are to love and take
care of one another, and help one another to be our very best! And even though there is no such thing as the perfect
family, we are truly blessed by God in all of the families that we find ourselves a part of and belong to in our life. These
are not easy days for families. So many outside forces and competing influences, make loving and taking care of one
another in any family, a very difficult thing to do. And yet we know that the family is exactly what we most need to learn
love, and selflessness, and sharing, and compassion, and many of our most important values today. We thanks then
today for all our families! And may that very special family from Nazareth always be our example for all the rest of our
families!
We know that families work together to take care of one another and to support one another. For the past
couple of months now, we’ve have been doing our bi-annual Diocesan Fruitful Harvest Campaign. To date, 36% of our
Parish Family has filled out pledge cards. That has yielded nearly $1.3 million in pledges over the next two years! We
are all most grateful for everyone’s generosity and sacrifice. In these final days of 2014, I really need for the remaining
64% of our Parish Family to think and pray about what they can do to help finish off this Campaign. With what has
already been done, we could very easily pay off our debt for the construction of our church building. For that to
happen, we need everyone who has not made their pledge to this Campaign to do as soon as possible. Even if you are
not able to make a pledge at this time, we still need to get your pledge card filled out. Please! We shouldn’t have to
come hunt you down. The Diocese asks each household to complete their pledge card and turn it in. Please fill out
your pledge card and return it to the Parish Office as soon as possible. We can do this! We just need everyone’s help!
It is what we can do for our Parish Family on this Feast of the Holy Family.
Let me also mention that this week, many of us are paying off our pledges from the last Fruitful Harvest
Campaign. Please don’t forget to complete your last pledge, if you have not yet already done so. And to all who made
that Campaign a success, I thank you very much for your generosity! This is also the perfect week to remember to your
Parish in your end-of-the-year giving. Got a little extra left over in your budget? How about sharing it with your Parish
Family? We will always put what you give us to good use!
I want to thank everyone who made our Christmas Masses such beautiful celebrations of God’s great Mystery!
It was a beautiful Christmas! Don’t forget the Feast of Mary Mother of God, a Holy Day of Obligation, this coming
Thursday, January 1. Masses are Wednesday evening at 5:30 pm and Thursday morning at 10 am. Have a blessed
New Year!
In Christ,
Fr. Kevin
A bird doesn’t sing because he has an answer. A bird sings because he has a song!
Welcome! For more than 19 years now, we have been building the Kingdom of God, not with a few people, but
with everyone! Please accept my warmest welcome, and I pray you will come to know St. Maria Goretti as we all
do—our Spiritual Home and Loving Community. We are glad you are here and look forward to meeting you!
God Bless you. —Father Kevin

REFLECTION FOR FEAST OF THE HOLY FAMILY
Today is the Feast of the Holy Family and
celebrates family and the Holy Family:
Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. The main purpose
of the Feast is to present the Holy Family
as THE model for all Christian families.
We find a model for family life that ultimately leads all its members to heaven.
Today, pray for the grace to lead lives
that imitate those of the Holy Family. As we prepare to
leave the stable in Bethlehem, our gaze to the house in
Nazareth, for it was in the “ordinary” life of the Holy Family
that “extraordinary” holiness was lived.
RCIA NEWS
RCIA will not meet again until January 5, 2015. Please continue to keep all those who are on this journey in your prayers.

FEATURE FAMILY
Shawn,
Angela,
Marshall,
Mackenzie,
Madison
Bricker
Shawn is a sports enthusiast who recently started a
new job at Charles Schwab.
Angela is a Behavior Analyst, who is currently teaching graduate courses at Ball State, the Owner/
Contractor of Bricker Behavioral Services, and a
full-time doctorate student.
How did you hear about SMG?
We have met lots of families that attend, and my
parents, who attend St. Joseph in Lebanon, will occasionally attend St. Maria Goretti and love it.
Hobbies:
We love family time: vacationing, bike riding, swimming, Colts and Pacers games. Mackenzie and Madison are both on competitive cheer teams and take
tumbling classes. Marshall is sports obsessed….
maybe the only 2-year-old who can name all the Pacers players and can call a foul when he sees one.
Best thing about SMG:
I really enjoy the family feel and the friendliness of
the parishioners.
Favorite Prayer:
Serenity Prayer and Philippians 4:6-7 (AMP)
Favorite Saint: St. Francis of Assisi
Prayer for the future: I just pray to make it through
each day and to be the best I can be. I know we will
be sinners, and I know God does not expect perfection, but I ask for strength in trying. Also, for each
day to spend time with family and friends.
Welcome the Bricker Family
to St. Maria Goretti!

Current SMG School Families are required to register
their children for the 2015-16 school year during Inhouse Registration, which is January 12-23. All families
must register children currently attending SMG, as well
as any kindergartners who will attend SMG next year
as a sibling. Failure to register either current students
or incoming kindergartners during this period will surrender your child’s position in class. Please remember
incoming kindergartners must be 5 years old by September 1.
The Registration Survey will be e-mailed to families
January 12. Complete the survey and turn in the nonrefundable $50 to the school office by January 23, 3 pm.
PLEASE NOTE: Registering after a close date may incur
a late fee and cause your athlete to be on a waiting list.
BOYS & GIRLS IN-HOUSE BASKETBALL
This league is for girls and boys in grades 1-3. The teams
will practice once a week with games on Saturdays. The
teams are not co-ed. Teams will be a mix of 1st and 2nd
graders, and all 3rd graders are together.
LACROSSE NEWS
Registration is now open for girls and boys lacrosse teams.
This year, SMG will team up with OLMC to introduce a
boys program for the parishes.
Practice for both girls and boys will begin in March with
games in April and May. The season will end in a State
Tournament in late May/early June. Cost is $95. If you
have questions, you are welcome to contact Gary Galvin
(OLMC), 414-0100 or [email protected], or Don Travis
(SMG), 625-2546 or [email protected].
