Amen. *HYMN 133 “Leaning on the Everlasting Arms” PASSING OF THE PEACE SCRIPTURE LESSON Lay Reader Exodus 1:1-22 1 These are the names of the sons of Israel who went to Egypt with Jacob, each with his family: 2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi and Judah; 3 Issachar, Zebulun and Benjamin; 4 Dan and Naphtali; Gad and Asher. 5 The descendants of Jacob numbered seventy in all; Joseph was already in Egypt. 6 Now Joseph and all his brothers and all that generation died, 7 but the Israelites were exceedingly fruitful; they multiplied greatly, increased in numbers and became so numerous that the land was filled with them. 8 Then a new king, to whom Joseph meant nothing, came to power in Egypt. 9 “Look,” he said to his people, “the Israelites have become far too numerous for us. 10 Come, we must deal shrewdly with them or they will become even more numerous and, if war breaks out, will join our enemies, fight against us and leave the country.” 11 So they put slave masters over them to oppress them with forced labor, and they built Pithom and Rameses as store cities for Pharaoh. 12 But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and spread; so the Egyptians came to dread the Israelites 13 and worked them ruthlessly. 14 They made their lives bitter with harsh labor in brick and mortar and with all kinds of work in the fields; in all their harsh labor the Egyptians worked them ruthlessly. 15 The king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, whose names were Shiphrah and Puah,16 “When you are helping the Hebrew women during childbirth on the delivery stool, if you see that the baby is a boy, kill him; but if it is a girl, let her live.” 17 The midwives, however, feared God and did not do what the king of Egypt had told them to do; they let the boys live.18 Then the king of Egypt summoned the midwives and asked them, “Why have you done this? Why have you let the boys live?” 19 The midwives answered Pharaoh, “Hebrew women are not like Egyptian women; they are vigorous and give birth before the midwives arrive.” 20 So God was kind to the midwives and the people increased and became even more numerous. 21 And because the midwives feared God, he gave them families of their own. 22 Then Pharaoh gave this order to all his people: “Every Hebrew boy that is born you must throw into the Nile, but let every girl live.” MESSAGE The Life of Moses: The Origin of the Jewish People Pastor John THE COVENANT The Covenant hymn, “Come, Let Us Use the Grace Divine,” was written for this service by Charles Wesley.” To Tune of “O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing” Come, let us use the grace divine, And all, with one accord, In a perpetual covenant join Ourselves to Christ the Lord; Give up ourselves, through Jesus’ power, His name to glorify; And promise, in this sacred hour, For God to live and die. The covenant we this moment make Be ever kept in mind: We will no more our God forsake, Or cast His words behind. We never will throw off His fear Who hears our solemn vow; And if Thou art well pleased to hear, Come down, and meet us now. To each the covenant blood apply, Which takes our sins away; And registers our names on high, And keeps us to that day. And now, friends, let us bind ourselves with willing bonds to our covenant God, and take the yoke of Christ upon us. This taking of His yoke upon us means that we are heartily content that he appoint us our place and work, and that He alone be our reward. Christ has many services to be done; some are easy, others are difficult; some bring honor, others bring reproach; some are suitable to our natural inclinations, and temporal interests, others are contrary to both. In some we may please Christ and please ourselves; in others we cannot please Christ except by denying ourselves. Yet the power to do all these things is assuredly given us in Christ, who strengthens us. Therefore let us make the covenant of God our own. Let us engage our heart to the Lord, and resolve in His strength never to go back. Being now prepared, let us now, in sincere dependence on His grace and trusting in His promises, yield ourselves anew to Him. Let Us Pray O Lord God, Holy Father, who has called us through Christ to be partakers in this gracious covenant: We take upon ourselves with joy the yoke of obedience, and engage ourselves, for your love, to seek and do your perfect will. We are no longer our own, but yours. I am no longer my own, but yours. Put me to what you will, rank me with whom you wilt; put me to doing, put me to suffering; let me be employed for you or laid aside for you, exalted for you or brought low for you, let me be full, let me be empty; let me have all things, let me have nothing; I freely and heartily yield all things to your pleasure and disposal. And now, O glorious and blessed God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, you are mine, and I am yours. So be it. And the covenant which I have made on earth, let it be ratified in heaven. Amen. PRAYER OF CONSECRATION Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of Your tender mercy didst give Your only Son Jesus Christ to suffer death upon the Cross for our redemption; who made there, the one offering of Himself, a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, for the sins of the whole world; and did institute, and in His Holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that His precious death, until His coming again; Hear us, O merciful Father, we most humbly beseech You; and grant that we receiving these Your creatures of bread and wine, according to Your Son our Savior Jesus Christ's Holy institution, in remembrance of His death and passion, may be partakers of the divine nature through Him. Who, in the same night that He was betrayed, took Bread; and, when He had given thanks, He broke it, and gave it to His disciples, saying, Take, eat, this is my Body which is given for you: Do this in remembrance of me. Likewise after supper He took the Cup; and, when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of this; for this is my Blood of the New Testament, which is shed for you and for many for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me. Amen. We do not presume to come to this thy table, O merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in thy manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under thy table. But thou art the same Lord, whose property is always to have mercy: Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to partake of this sacrament of thy Son Jesus Christ, that we may walk in newness of life, may grow in His likeness, and may evermore dwell in Him, and He in us. Amen. HOLY COMMUNION - in pews GIVING OF HIS TITHES, OUR GIFTS AND OFFERINGS OFFERTORY *DOXOLOGY 95 Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise him, all creatures here below; Praise him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. CLOSING HYMN 127 “Guide Me O Thou Great Jehovah” BENEDICTION POSTLUDE BENEDICTION Pastor John ORGAN POSTLUDE Mr. Heim *Congregation, please stand as you are able. How did the Jewish people come into being? “The LORD had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you.” Genesis 12:1 Six Promises - Genesis 12:2 1. “I will make you into a great nation, 2. and I will bless you; 3. I will make your name great, 4. and you will be a blessing. 5. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; 6. and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” Genesis 12:4…”Abram left (went) as the Lord had told him.” 2. How did the Jewish people end up in Egypt? Exodus was written by _________ Why is it important? “Moses then wrote down everything the LORD had said.” Exodus 24:4 “At the LORD’s command Moses recorded the stages in their journey.” Numbers 33:2 Exodus 1 Who was this new king who did not know about Joseph? Why was he afraid of the Hebrews? How would he get rid of the threat? First plan: Second plan: Third Plan: APPLICATION Is God in control? What happened to the promises of God? How would you worship God if you were living through this? Can we praise God in the midst of the unfairness of life? How does the sovereignty of God and our own free will balance out? Life ___ _______ ________ How do you have hope? “By faith Joseph, when his end was near, spoke about the exodus of the Israelites from Egypt and gave instructions about his bones.” Hebrews 11:22 “By faith Moses’ parents hid him three months after he was born, because they saw that he was no ordinary child, and they were not afraid of the king’s edict.” Vs 23 “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” James 1:2 FOR FURTHER STUDY Read Exodus 1 1. What policies did the Egyptian pharaoh adopt in order to keep the Hebrews from becoming too numerous? 2. How was God involved in preserving the lives of His oppressed people? Shiphrah and Puah are the two Hebrew midwives who disobeyed Pharaoh’s orders to kill male Hebrew infants (1:15). Why did they resist Pharaoh, risking this own lives? Certainly they had compassion for their own Hebrew people, and thus would have not wanted to carry out Pharaoh’s command. But their ultimate motive was because they “feared God” (1:17). What does that mean? They values God’s gift of human life more highly than obedience to Pharaoh. For their faithfulness God rewarded them with families of their own (1:21). 3. How should we respond when, like the Hebrew midwives, we are asked to do something that is against God’s purposes for humankind? Married Couples Study An 8 week study to grow your marriage.
