New Strategy to Consolidate Progress
The CANA Zone IV 2014 AGM
was held in Johannesburg, South
Africa on 21-22 June 2014. The
General Assembly reviewed the
four year strategy that was adopted
at the inaugural AGM in 2010.
Significant progress was made on
the plan and the meeting noted the
successes and challenges over the
last few years. The Vision that was
agreed in 2010 has indeed become
a reality with the Zone IV becoming the most active and competitive on the African continent.
We have seen most of the Zone IV
countries now participating in
regional, continental and FINA
events. The growth of the CANA
Zone ¾ championship has now
become one of the most successful
swimming events in Africa with
more than 200 athletes participating.
The quality of performance of our
swimmers have also continued to
grow with most of the countries
now achieving podium performances. The recent African Youth
Games in Botswana was the pinna-
cle of the last four years with all
14 countries of our Zone participating, with 70% of the participants coming from Zone IV and 10
of the countries achieving podium
finishes.

The partnership created in
2008 with the AUSC R5
(formally SCSA Zone VI)
has grown from strength to
strength. In the past cycle we
hosted events in Swaziland
(2010) and Zambia (2012).
The regional governments
have begun to send teams to
the event and are investing in
infrastructure. This has assist-
ed in the growth of swimming in all countries.
In 2014 the AUSC Region 5
Youth Games was successfully hosted in Bulawayo
Zimbabwe. This will be followed by Angola (2016) and
Botswana (2018).
In addition to the successful
Youth Games, the region has
also developed a strategy to
improve the quality of performance of our athletes. A Performance
Podium
Programme has been adopted to
ensure that more medals are
won by our athletes from our
Zone.
