WHY DOES THE CHURCH REQUIRE
ENGAGED COUPLES TO PARTICIPATE IN
A MARRIAGE PREPARATION PROGRAM?
Marriage preparation offers couples the
opportunity to develop a better understanding of
Christian marriage; to evaluate and deepen their
readiness to live married life; and to gain insights
into themselves as individuals and as a couple. It
is especially effective in helping couples to deal
with the challenges of the early years of marriage.
Marriage preparation instituted within the
Catholic Church in the nine county areas
(Brevard, Lake, Marion, Orange, Osceola, Polk,
Seminole, Sumter and Volusia) of the Diocese of
Orlando is a three phase process completed over a
four to six month period.
FIRST PHASE: ASSESSMENT
This phase is an assessment time at the parish of
the engaged couple with a FOCCUS survey and
follow up sessions. This survey, while not
predictive of the future for this relationship, is
indicative of what is happening presently with the
couple and provides direction for discussion of
the indicated differences.
The administration of FOCCUS should be done
prior to the second phase; follow up sessions may
be completed after the second phase.
SECOND PHASE: WORKSHOP
The second phase is a completion of a Pre Cana
Seminar, Engaged Couples Weekend, or a
Diocesan approved parish based preparation
program. The approach is based on the
significance of family as a system, the influence
of our family of origin and the skills needed to
maintain a successful marriage.
The workshops are:
Pre Cana
An eight hour day session seminar including the
following:
1) Faith enrichment: deepening the understanding
of sacrament and covenant as foundation of
marriage.
2) Communication skills: active listening,
constructive conflict resolution and decision
making techniques.
3) Financial management: budgeting, savings,
credit management and goal setting.
4) Responsible parenting: focus is on recognizing
styles of parenting and the importance of
learning skills through parenting classes and
resources in the community.
5) Recognizing health/unhealthy relationships:
couples are provided with resources and
information for assistance when if needed.
6) Self awareness, human sexuality and natural
family planning.
Remarriage Preparation
Is required when there is any previous marriage
(even if annulment has occurred) or there are
children from a past relationship. This program
covers the Pre Cana topics as well as blended
family issues and step-parenting. The importance
of positive co-parenting is discussed.
THIRD PHASE: FOLLOW UP
The third phase happens at the parish and involves
individual sacramental preparation, the planning
of the wedding ceremony including selection of
reading and vows and completion of the
paperwork.
Engaged Couples Weekend
Retreat
A weekend program which covers the Pre Cana
topics. In addition, couples learn a reflection and
dialogue process, have an opportunity to practice
these skills and also interact with other couples who
share the same values.
Parish Based Program
Covers the Pre Cana topics as well as introduces
participants to parish life, its ministries and its
people. This program encourages the RCIA model
of community celebration of sacrament.
In a sacramental marriage, God’s love
becomes present to the spouses in their total
union and also flows through them to their
family and community.
