Welcome to St. Helena Church
Our Church is a center for spiritual growth, where
positive attitudes are developed, where good people
become better, where hurts are healed, where lessons are
learned, where friendships are developed, where marriages
restless find peace, where love is alive, where God is
understood, where the Holy Spirit leads, and where Jesus
Christ is Lord. Together, let us spread the message of the
Gospel to our neighbors.

Preparation of the Gifts
The Liturgy of the Eucharist now begins, which forms the central part of the
liturgy due to its direct institution by Christ. The Offertory has always been
considered one the essential actions of the Catholic Mass although it looks like a
passive and quiet moment. This is the rite by which the bread and wine are
presented (offered) to God before they are consecrated.
Rite of Hand Washing
The Rite of Hand Washing, or Lavabo, before celebrating the holy Liturgy
originated from the practical precaution of cleanness and later interpreted also
symbolically.

God and Father of us all, in Jesus, your Son and our Savior, you have made us your sons
and daughters in the family of the Church. May your grace and love help our families in every
part of the world be united to one another in fidelity to the Gospel. May the example of the
Holy Family, with the aid of your Holy Spirit, guide all families, especially those most
troubled, to be homes of communion and prayer and to always seek your truth and live in your
love. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. Jesus, Mary and Joseph, pray for us!

The World Meeting of Families – Philadelphia
2015 is welcoming the world to Philadelphia from
September 22-27, 2015 for a Congress on Family
followed by an anticipated visit from Pope Francis.
Many local families have inquired about how they
can “Host a Family” during this time. A company
named Homestay.com has a program that can
organize this. You can find more @WorldMeeting
2015.org under “Get Involved” and follow the links
for “Host a Family.” Host families can offer
visitors a spare bedroom, or vacated apartment. If
you would like to open your home to a World
Meeting of Families visitor, we thank you. “Host a

The Feast of the Holy Family is not just about the Holy Family, but about our own families too. The main
purpose of the Feast is to present the Holy Family as the model for all Christian families, and for domestic life in
general. Our family life becomes sanctified when we live the life of the Church within our homes. This is called
the "domestic church" or the "church in miniature." St. John Chrysostom urged all Christians to make each home
a "family church," and in doing so, we sanctify the family unit. Just how does one live out the Church in the
family? The best way is by making Christ the center of family and individual life. Ways to do this include: reading
scripture regularly, praying daily, attending Mass at least on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation, imitating the
actions of the Holy Family, going to confession frequently, and so forth, all done together as a family unit. In
addition to cultivating positive actions, the Church understands that various actions and behaviors are contrary to
God's Divine plan for the family, and these should be avoided. These include abortion, contraception, same-sex
marriage, polygamy, embryonic stem-cell research, divorce, spousal abuse, child abuse, and co-habitation.
Catholic Teaching is that a marriage must be open to children. Anything artificial that prevents this is contrary to
divine law, although spacing births for a just reason is permitted (and may be licitly accomplished through
"natural family planning"). Also, poverty, lack of health care, rights violations, government intrusion in the life of
communities and families, and other justice concerns must be addressed by faithful Christians because of the
negative effect these conditions have on the family unit.
Today we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family. Parents can appreciate the ritual action of Mary
and Joseph today as they presented Jesus at the Temple. Most of us have acted similarly in presenting our
children for baptism in our own church. These symbolic actions are important milestones, but we certainly know
as parents that sacramental moments are only benchmarks. The everyday living out of our faith is truly who we
are. Mary, Joseph and Jesus returned to Nazareth where Jesus grew and learned, and it was in the ordinariness of
Jesus’ life that he grew in the favor of God’s love. It is the same for us as we help shape who our children will
become. Help your children remember the wisdom of elderly members of your family and their ancestors. Recall
stories you have heard about them and perhaps you even have some photographs or a family Bible that registers
your family tree. If not, make a family tree that allows space for drawings, photographs, or short stories about the
people on the tree.
I would like to thank all those who helped with the cleaning of the Churches, decorating the
Churches for Christmas and all those who attended our Christmas Liturgies. It was so great to see so many
families in Church. We will have a special 11:00pm Mass on Wednesday to welcome 2015. Consider joining us
to welcome the New Year and the Feast of Mary, Mother of God. Finally, the priests and I would like to thank
you for your Christmas wishes and gifts. We are most grateful to you and ask the Holy Family to watch over
your family during the New Year. May God bless all of you! Thanks for reading and have a good week!
Your Brother & Shepherd,
Rev. Msgr. Joseph Trinh
