DAILY RECESS DURING THE WINTER MONTHS
The winter season is upon us! It is important to review Lincoln’s procedures regarding daily recess
times. Each grade level has a 15-minute recess break in the morning or afternoon on most days, and all
students have a 25-minute recess after they finish eating lunch. Please make sure that your child comes
to school dressed appropriately for these daily outside breaks. Most days, this will mean long sleeves, a
winter coat, gloves or mittens, and a hat. In addition, students should wear socks or tights to keep their
feet and legs warm throughout the day. In order for the children to play in the snow, they will need
snow pants and boots to protect them and keep them warm and dry.
As a general rule of thumb, if the temperature and wind chill are above 20 degrees and
weather/playground conditions permit, students will go outside for noon recess. On days when it is
colder than the guidelines listed above, we will use discretion in having the children outside. Fresh air is
good for them, but we will not jeopardize their well-being. If the weather is extreme, with temperatures
or wind chills in the teens or lower, students will not go outside for noon recess. On these days,
students will remain in the lunchroom until dismissed to their classrooms for indoor recess.

LAST MINUTE CHANGES IN DISMISSAL PLANS AT LGS
Each day between 2:00 and 3:00 p.m., the LGS office receives numerous phone calls from parents
requesting office staff to inform their child of a change in after-school plans. For example, students who
were supposed to ride the bus are going to be picked up by someone instead or students who were
going to be picked up are supposed to go to ECP instead. These last-minute changes in plans disrupt
teaching and learning since communicating them requires us to interrupt classroom procedures. In
addition, the inconsistency puts undue stress on students.
We understand that sometimes last-minute changes in plans are necessary. However, we strongly
encourage families to send a note to school with your child to communicate after-school plans early in
the day. When you write the note – include your student’s first and last name, their teacher, and please
put the date on it. Thank you!
This way, students, as well as teachers, the office staff, ECP, bus personnel, etc., know what the plan is
without the need for a last-minute flurry of communication. We appreciate your help with this. If you
have questions, please call the LGS office at 444-2326.
PARENTS OF BUS RIDERS: Please remember that students must ride the bus they have been
assigned to ride. Parents who want/need to have their student(s) ride a different
bus, must contact the Superintendent's office for approval. The phone number for the District
Office is 444-4182. If students do not have permission from the District Office to ride a
different bus, they WILL NOT be allowed to make ANY bus change.
