theatre summer program now heading
into its 21st fabulous year at the Jewish
Community Centre of Greater Vancouver.
Gotta Sing! Gotta Dance! has attracted
hundreds of enthusiastic and talented
participants age nine to 19, who love
to sing, dance, act and perform, from
throughout British Columbia and as far
away as Whitehorse, Edmonton, Regina,
Yorkton, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Nova Scotia,
Prince Edward Island, California, New
York, Colorado, Virginia, Texas, Austria
and Israel.

an impressive faculty of professional
instructors
(directors,
musicians,
choreographers, and actors, each working
in his or her respective field).
The faculty last year included musical
directors Wendy Bross Stuart and Lonnie Delisle; director Chris McGregor;
choreographers Isabelle Maheux, Laura
Krewski, Jason Franco, Troy McLaughlin,
Anna Kuman and Andrew Cohen; acting
coach Advah Soudack; and Steven Beaver
(set construction and costume coordinator).
Peter Birnie formerly of The Vancouver
Sun, wrote: “Perry Ehrlich is the proud
father to two grown daughters, but
“uncle” to hundreds of children. Heck,
they must number in the thousands, with
many of them now grown to adulthood,
as the Richmond lawyer’s love of musical
theatre led him to found the Gotta Sing!
Gotta Dance! summer training program.
This year’s script, as is always the case,
is a crazy-quilt of old songs, new songs,
bad puns, cheesy bridges and good – no
make that great – opportunities for the
nine to 19 cast to show off some newly
acquired skills. I try to attend every year
and always come away just as thrilled as
the parents and families with the level of
talent on display. It is about the joy that
comes with singing your lungs out and
dancing your hooves out.”
David Connolly, who participated in
the faculty for two years and is now
choreographing the musical First Wives
Club heading for Broadway, commented
in an article written by Sara Harowitz
in the Huffington Post: “I’m in awe of
Perry and his commitment and his
intention. His intention isn’t to produce
stars, although that is a byproduct. His
intention is to give those kids life skills
that they bring with them wherever they
go, in whatever they pursue.”
THE FINISHING SCHOOL will again
be offered for serious musical theatre
students attending the program. THE
FINISHING SCHOOL will feature
instruction in audition technique,
preparation of monologues and songs,
dance workshops, and encounters with
professionals in the theatre community.
The Program is offered in two sessions
– Session I from July 7 to 30, 2015 and
Session II from August 4 to 27, 2015. Cost
per Session is $750 ($650 for Members of
the JCC), and the deadline for application
is April 1, 2015. You can save $50 by
applying prior to December 31, 2014.

ust in time for the holidays, the Disney musical
Mary Poppins returns to the Arts Club’s Stanley
Industrial Alliance Stage on December 5. The
classic tale of everyone’s favourite magical nanny
is now an irresistible Broadway sensation, interweaving
highlights from the 1964 Walt Disney film with the
original stories by P.L. Travers.
Sara-Jeanne Hosie reprises the role of Mary, and instills
magic in the hearts of those young and old as she flies
over the rooftops of London. With lessons to be learned
and fun to be had, Hosie shares the spirit of this iconic
character and provides the perfect, uplifting atmosphere
for a holiday show that the whole family can enjoy. And
don’t forget the music! Enjoy all of the original tunes,
including Chim Chim Cher-ee, Spoonful of Sugar, and
Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, as well as some new ones
written just for the stage!

The Addams Family
O
n November 2, the cast of The Addams Family gathered for the first time. Amid
cake and Halloween candy, was the first read through of the script, and a room full
of excitement!
The Addams Family has maintained a cult following through generations, from the
first appearance of The Addams Family comics in The New Yorker magazine in 1938,
which would eventually feature over 1,300 Addams Family comics, to 1964, when
the family made their debut on the ABC network. Two wildly successful movies in
the 90’s, led to the TV revival, The New Addams Family in 1998, and eventually, the
creation of the award-winning musical in 2009.
Charles Addams’ initial description of the family was as follows, “Gomez and Pugsley
are enthusiastic. Morticia is even in disposition, muted, witty, and sometimes deadly.
Grandma Frump is foolishly goodnatured. Wednesday is her mother’s
daughter. A closely knit family,
the real head being Morticia—
although each of the others is a
definite character — except for
Grandma, who is easily led.
Many of the troubles they
have as a family are due to
Grandma’s fumbling, weak
character. The house
is a wreck, of course,
but this is a houseproud family just
the same and every
trap door is in good
repair. Money is no
problem.”
A family this eccentric requires careful
casting. The enchanting matriarch will
be played by the illustrious Laura Cowan
Beattie (Gingy/ Sugar Plum Fairy –
Shrek the Musical, Amy – Ink). Her
suave husband Gomez will be played by
Brennan Cuff (Will Parker – Oklahoma!,
Richie Valens - Buddy! The Buddy Holly
Story). Matthew Federowicz (Tevya –
Fiddler on the Roof, Elle’s Dad/Dewy/
Winthrop – Legally Blonde) will play
the deranged Uncle Fester. The stony
Wednesday will be played by Laura
Geluch (Delta Nu/Court Stenographer
– Legally Blonde). Making his musical
debut is Avery Johnson as Pugsley.
The Addams Family is on stage at the
Michael J. Fox Theatre in Burnaby from

Love, lust and the chemical nature of romance are front and centre in Private Lives, Noel Coward’s
timeless comedy about a pair of eternally hopeful – or are they hopeless? – lovers.
Young Sybil and worldly Elyot have just begun their honeymoon in a posh French hotel. Sybil refuses
to speak of little else but Elyot’s honeymoon with his first wife, Amanda, whom
he hasn’t seen in five years. Elyot claims Amanda – vivacious, beautiful,
and temperamental to a fault – couldn’t be further from his mind. As
fate would have it, spirited Amanda and her new husband, Victor,
are having a very similar honeymoon conversation in the suite
next door.

While their respective current spouses busy themselves
elsewhere in the hotel, Amanda and Elyot meet once more
under the moonlight – and the brief encounter re-ignites
the tortured passion that once burned brightly between
them. Thus, they slip away from their new spouses to a
Parisian flat and pledge to love each other again, but this
time without the pettiness, jealousy and bickering that
capsized them the first time around. But do they have what
it takes to make a lasting go of it?

n post-apartheid South Africa, in
a valley where properties are still owned
exclusively by white people, 76-yearold Abraam ‘Buks’ Jonkers continues
to till the land he will never own. But
while Buks loyally maintains the prized
property of his past, his golden-voiced
granddaughter, Veronica, can’t wait to
star on Johannesburg stages. When a
potential new property owner arrives,
both Buks and Veronica must decide if
they will hold tight to the past or take a
chance on the future.
Directed by Gateway Theatre’s artistic
director Jovanni Sy, he explains why he
chose to direct this show. “I saw Athol
Fugard perform in this play 20 years
ago in Toronto. It was one of the most
memorable theatrical experiences of my
life.” He adds, “Fugard is one of my
playwriting heroes – an author with an
extraordinary gift for storytelling and a
ferocious passion for social justice. His
writing helped to change the course of

his country. I can’t wait to share this play
with audiences in February.”
Written by the prolific South African
playwright Fugard, Valley Song is a
theatrical poem told by two actors that
brings timeless truths to life through
the beautiful South African landscape.
Best known for his writing, Fugard is
also an esteemed actor and director.
In the 1995 production of Valley Song,
Fugard played the roles of the Author
and the grandfather Buks. “I had ended
up sick and tired of the madness and
desperate scramble of my life in the
make-believe world of the theatre.” He
writes, “I wanted to return to essentials,
to the ‘real’ world, and here was my
chance to do it.”
David Adams, a theatrical veteran
and familiar face to Gateway Theatre
audiences, was last seen at Gateway in
2012 playing the part of Tevye in Fiddler
on the Roof. Adams is thrilled to return
to play the role Fugard originally created
and brought to life on stage, “I’m so
excited and privileged to be doing Valley
Song this upcoming season – a rare
chance to tackle a beautifully crafted
play that profoundly speaks to my own
personal background and ancestry.”
Starring alongside Adams, and a firsttime performer at Gateway Theatre,
Sereana Malani plays the role of the
Buks’s granddaughter Veronica. Local
audiences would have last seen Malani in
the last two seasons at Bard on the Beach.

Bird by acclaimed Canadian playwright
Colleen Murphy. The co-production
opens at Kay Meek Centre January 29
and will run for three weeks before
leaving for Montreal.

The plot recounts the story of Lilly and Morgan Beaumont, in their mid-60s and
comfortable in their routine until Parker, a homeless man, lands on the balcony
of their new condo. After scaring the older couple half to death, he pours himself
into the holes of their relationship and brings to light things they didn’t know were
missing, sparking a questioning of their comfortable lives.
This thought-provoking comedic drama by Governor General Award-winning,
Quebec-born Murphy ingeniously achieves a satisfying balance of wry humour and
melancholy. The Goodnight Bird was first presented in 2011 at London’s Finborough
Theatre while Murphy was playwright-in-residence.
This North American premiere reunites acclaimed and much-loved Vancouver
actor Nicola Cavendish and director Roy Surette on the heels of their successful
collaboration on 4000 Miles at the Arts Club in September 2014. The cast
was assembled from across Canada and will also feature some of the nation’s
finest established actors, including Christopher Hunt (Calgary) and Graham
Cuthbertson (Montreal).
For Cavendish, this is only the second major project she has undertaken since
a self-imposed hiatus from acting in 2012 to focus on personal priorities. Her
choice of productions is by no means random. The role of Vera in 4000 Miles
and Lilly in The Goodnight Bird are strong women who face the questions and
challenges of aging, relationships and loss.
Vancouver native Surette (artistic director, Centaur Theatre Company)
is well known to West Coast audiences as the former artistic director of
the Belfry Theatre and Touchstone Theatre. Since moving to Centaur
in 2007 he has returned to Vancouver on a regular basis to direct and
collaborate on local, regional and national projects.

This community celebration features over 50 performers
presenting numbers from the hit musicals presented in the
Lower Mainland in 2014, while also presenting awards to
people and companies that present these musicals.
The first OVATION Awards Show was presented at the
Backstage Lounge in 2004, but the celebration quickly outgrew
the venue and is now presented at the Vancouver Academy of
Music to accommodate the sold-out audiences each year.
As well as the thrilling performances, the ultimate goal of
the evening is to celebrate the hundreds of people who
dedicate hours of their time working on-and off-stage with the
numerous companies that present musicals. Musical theatre is
alive and well in here in the Lower Mainland, with 65 shows
performed in 2014, including full productions, revues and
“pantos.”
The show makes every effort to include numbers from all the
hit shows of the year, including Grease, Shrek The Musical, Jesus
Christ Superstar, Cabaret, Annie, Spring Awakening, Legally
Blonde, Spamalot, Reefer Madness, Cannibal The Musical, Floyd
Collins, Carrie The Musical, Crazy for You, Red Rock Diner,
Evil Dead, Rent and The Marvelous Wonderettes. In addition

Over 20 awards in a number of categories are presented,
including the Outstanding Longtime Contribution Award
given to a member of the community who has contributed
