Welcome to the 25th anniversary season of the Chandler Center for the Arts!
My name is Michelle Mac Lennan and I’ve been with the Center for fifteen
years, most recently as the Assistant Manager and now as the General Manager.
Before we embark on the next twenty five years, I want to take this moment to
acknowledge all of those who have helped us reach this milestone season. We are
deeply grateful to our volunteers, patrons, partners, supporters and staff.
Twenty-five years ago the City of Chandler and the Chandler Unified School District
envisioned an Arts Center that now serves over 300,000 people annually. With their
insight, and the leadership support of the Chandler Cultural Foundation, a model for
excellence in collaborative programming emerged.
We are thrilled to share our 25th Anniversary season of performances, exhibits
and cultural experiences with you. With over one thousand events annually, we
feature multiple genres of artists and art forms. I personally recommend our annual
signature event, the Zoppé Italian Family Circus. Now in its sixth year in Chandler,
this old world European circus tradition has become a Chandler tradition.
We look forward to seeing you this season.

The Chandler Unified School District has been a proud partner
of the Chandler Center for Arts for 25 years. This collaboration
with the City of Chandler has enabled our students
opportunities to perform in a first-class facility.
Thank you for celebrating with us as we commemorate 25 years of
arts and entertainment in the Chandler community. Through its storied
history, this facility has been home to thousands of performances,
bringing delight and wonder to all who have visited.
The successful joint use agreement of the Center between the
Chandler Unified School District and the City of Chandler, was
the harbinger of other joint projects with the City including libraries and pools that
provide additional amenities at a reduced cost for taxpayers.
The Chandler Center for the Arts would not have been possible without
the collaboration of many local partners who worked passionately to
bring an inspiring new level of culture to our community.
We appreciate our ongoing relationship with City of Chandler and look forward to
the Center for the Arts next 25 years!

The mission of the Chandler Center for the Arts is to make visual and performing arts available to
the entire Chandler population; to become a creative force and an educational resource for the
community; and to harness the economic vitality of the arts.

Dynamic leaders, loyal supporters and visionaries describe the Board members of Chandler
Cultural Foundation. The Chandler Cultural Foundation is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit corporation established
in 1989 to program and raise funds for the Center’s artistic and outreach programs. Ticket sales and
other earned income cover only part of the Center’s programming expenses, which means that the
Chandler Cultural Foundation’s fundraising efforts play a vital role in delivering quality arts programs at

at the Center’s Plugged In concert. In addition, these bands get professional
coaching on marketing and public relations along with a professional band photo

¡FlaMÉXico! is a musical reflection of two cultures forming
a new vision. Arizona-born composer Chris Burton Jácome
charged his project ¡FlaMÉXico! with finding, creating and
celebrating the musical confluences of Spain’s Flamenco and
México’s Mariachi.
Chris grew up listening to mariachi music at his family’s
fiestas, but felt a calling to a musical genre more distant from
his Mexican-American roots. Flamenco stole Chris’ heart and
he moved to Sevilla, Spain to study the art form directly from
the source.
¡FlaMÉXico!’s mission is to find a genuine fusion of two
distinct and profound musical styles while adequately
representing the cultural integrity of each. Beauty, celebration
and joy have all been found in the beginning stages of this
quest. New audiences will be enthralled and delighted by the
initial results.

features haute couture LBD’s from each decade from some of the finest designers
of all time, including Gilbert Adrian, Coco Chanel and William Travilla, just to
name a few.

The 2014-2015 season marks the 22nd anniversary of the Chandler Symphony Orchestra.
Since its humble start in 1993 as the San Marcos Symphony, these dedicated, professionally
trained musicians have provided the greater Chandler community with the opportunity to hear great
music at no charge.
Every year, Conductor Jack Herriman and Associate Conductor Alex Zheng lead volunteer
musicians from all around the Valley in a Pops concert and five Classical concerts, including a
spring concert that showcases the winner of the annual Youth Competition. The three Chamber
Music concerts have become popular as well, in the more intimate Hal Bogle Theatre. It isn’t
unusual for both halls in the Chandler Center to be filled for these concerts, demonstrating the
benefit of free admission in making classical music accessible to everyone.

The Fall of the Berlin Wall
“Rockin’ the Wall,” the story of music’s part in
bringing down the Iron Curtain, mixes music, politics,
and history over the 40-year period of the Cold War.
Featuring the Doors, Quiet Riot, Toto, Vanilla Fudge,
and “witnesses” from behind the Wall, “Rockin’ the
Wall” introduces us to a Romanian black market
rock music record dealer, a Hungarian drummer/
activist forced to escape his home country through
a guarded railroad tunnel, a Ukranian woman whose
conversion to Christianity she attributed to “Jesus
Christ Superstar,” and an Atlanta funk-rock band that
played East Berlin just two weeks before the Wall fell.
Featuring original music by stars of the day, as well
as new original recordings made exclusively for the
film, “Rockin’ the Wall” celebrates a time when music
changed the world.

of Chandler come together for a dinner gala at the City’s crown jewel…the Chandler Center
for the Arts. Molly Sirus, Chandler High Schools’ most famous (or infamous) alumni is the
evenings’ honorary chair. Mayhem ensues when Molly’s boyfriend, plastic surgeon and tabloid
favorite, Hugh Van Helsing, is found bludgeoned to death in the Green Room with a mannequin
leg from the Little Black Dress exhibit. With the building in lock down, the gala goers are forced
to work together to find out who among them is a murderer.

the ancient Asian parable of The Oxherder, in which a herdboy’s

“The SnowCat story is certainly spiritual, but it is secular, not religious, and thus it is universal. It contains

The African Children’s Choir is composed of African
children, aged 7 to 10 years old. Many have lost
one or both parents through the devastation of war,
famine and disease. They represent all the children
of a continent and they demonstrate the potential
of African children to become strong leaders for
a better future in their land. The children melt the
hearts of audiences with their charming smiles and
delightful African tunes, accompanied by ethnic
instrumentation.
The program features well-loved children’s songs,
hand clapping, traditional spirituals and contemporary
tunes. Nearly every performance is concluded with a thunderous standing ovation. A marvelous by-product of
the concert is the inspiration the music brings to virtually every listener. In spite of the tragedy that has marred
their young lives, the children are radiant with hope, musically gifted and wonderfully entertaining.
The primary goal of the Choir is to raise awareness of the need of destitute and orphaned children in Africa
and to raise funds for continued development and support of the African Children’s Choir Programs. The
Choir’s international educational endeavor provides unique training for the children. Once Choir members have
completed a concert tour, they will return to their homelands with the tools necessary for bettering their future.

The first act was written by Terry Earp, she collaborated with
Karen-Holliday Tanner who is the closest living relative of
Doc Holliday and author of the book; Doc Holliday - “A Family
Portrait” which the play is primarily based on. Wyatt Earp has
been portraying his famous relative in his one-man play called
“Wyatt Earp: A Life on The Frontier” since 1996. In 1998, he
began performing as Doc Holliday which is based on the book
“Doc Holliday” in subsequent plays written by Terry Earp.
Act One: The setting, is in a Denver Colorado jail cell, where
Bat Masterson and Governor Frederick W. Pitkin have put Doc
in protective custody for a few hours. Unfortunately, for Doc a
few hours have turned into a few days. Out of boredom and
frustration, Doc begins bantering with the other prisoners (you, the audience).
Act Two: The setting, is set in a cemetery in Dos Cabezas, Arizona in 1930. Doc Holliday’s woman, Mary
Katherine Haroney Cummings (Big Nose Kate), reveals her true identity to the ghost of John J. Howard, the
man with whom she has shared the last years of her life with as Mary Cummings. Kate completes the story
of the turbulent lives of Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday, disclosing things they would or could never say about
themselves. Kate also speaks about the circumstances that plunged her life from that of a lady with an upperclass background into a life of Prostitution and how she survived.

This show features over 40 hit songs from four decades of jukebox chart toppers! “Tuxedo Junction,” “In The
Mood,” “Pennsylvania 6-5000,” “Chattanooga Choo Choo” and “Moonlight Seranade” were all major hit records.
Miller played to sell out crowds, and his music constantly dominated the airwaves from 1938-1942. Just prior
to going into the army, he had disbanded his famous orchestra and eventually formed the Glenn Miller Army
Air Force Band to entertain the servicemen. On December 15, Major Miller took off in a single engine plane
from London to precede his band to Paris. The weather was foreboding. Not very confident, he said to the
pilot, “Maybe we ought to call this off?” The flight officer ribbed him about his fear of flying, “Do you want to
live forever?” Glenn Miller disappeared on December 15, 1944. The bandleader went down over the English
Channel at the height of his popularity.
Now, over sixty years since the public first embraced the successful Miller Sound, both the legend and the
music live on. The Glenn Miller Orchestra is the most sought after big band in the world today for both concert
and dance engagements. Still considered the greatest band of all time, its unique sound is loved by almost
anybody that cares for dance music.

Theatre Kidz
Since 2007, CCA has connected to Chandler youth
through professional performing arts school day
performances. Chandler Center for the Arts is
committed to making theatre, music, dance and other
performing arts activities available to students through
this program.
Vision Kidz
The Vision Kidz Program offers two series of art
workshops to children and teens ages 6 to 16 years
old. These workshops provide an opportunity to work
with a professional artist in creating artworks that lay
the foundation for continued studies in the visual arts.
Youth Advisory Council
Teens 13-18 years old will focus on arts appreciation,
arts advocacy, community service and leadership skills
in order to become well-rounded community leaders.
Teens complete the program with an increased
knowledge of small and large group dynamics,
financial responsibilities and career opportunities.

Youth Advisory Council
•Teens engage in experiential 3-hour sessions from September to February that will provide
hands-on real world leadership situations of a Performing Arts Center.
•Candidates are 13-18 years of age and currently attending a public, private, parochial, charter,
or home school in Chandler. Students from surrounding cities are encouraged to apply.
•Applications are accepted during August each year. Interviews are conducted in September and a
maximum of 15 teens are selected.
•The Youth Advisory Council program is free of charge to all participants.
•A Certificate of Completion will be given to each teen at the conclusion of the program year.

With a passion for arts education, Hong incorporates a week-long residency for
students in the communities in which he performs. Hong’s uniquely humorous
and visionary approach to arts education has resulted in artistic residencies
from coast-to-coast. The McGraw-Hill Companies honored him with the Robert
Sherman Award for Music Education and Community Outreach. His tireless
pursuit to find, inspire, and collaborate with talents in every community results
in unforgettable presentations that both expand worlds and hit close to home.

Utah Shakespeare Festival presents
Macbeth

Three witches await the coming of Macbeth and Banquo, Scottish generals
on their way home after a victorious battle. The three witches prophesy that
Macbeth shall become the thane of Cawdor and later on shall be king. When
the thane of Ross arrives and addresses Macbeth with the new title, the
witches’ prophecies already seem to be coming true.
Macbeth, with his wife’s urging and assistance, murders King Duncan in his
bed. Macbeth goes now to consult the witches. They warn him to beware of
Macduff who is suspicious of Macbeth. However, they also assure him that no
man born of a woman can harm him and that he cannot be defeated.
Lady Macbeth, becomes completely overcome by remorse and guilt and, with
unsettled mind, dies by her own hand. Macduff attacks the castle. During his final hand-to-hand conflict with
Macduff, Macbeth learns that his opponent was prematurely ripped from his mother’s womb, a Caesarean
birth. Macbeth realizes he is doomed but, rather than being captured alive, fights to his death and announces
Scotland’s freedom from tyranny.

Story Pirates is a nationally respected education and media
organization founded in 2003 to celebrate the words and ideas of
young people. By pairing world-class teachers with first-rate actors
and comedians, they make learning more engaging and effective. Dually based in New York and Los Angeles,
their acclaimed programs are in place at over 200 schools from coast to coast. Wherever the Story Pirates
go, they bring along furry monsters, Viking costumes, flying cats, and sacks of treasure for an experience that
shows kids the power of writing in a way they'll never forget. This program will include stories written by kids in
our community. If you are interested in submitting stories, the deadline for your class is September 1.

All workshops are taught on Saturdays at 10am and 1pm. Please come in or call the
Gallery at 480.782.2695 to register your child for a choice of three workshops, which are
offered free to the community.
Each parent may register a child for up to three workshops. Workshops offer appropriate arts
curriculum for students between the ages of 6 and 14 years of age. A parent or guardian is
required to attend the workshop with their children. Only students registered for the workshop
will be admitted to the classroom. If your child is unable to attend a scheduled workshop,
please call at least 48 hours in advance so a child on the waiting list can be admitted to the
class. It is important that we fill each workshop to capacity, therefore, last minute cancellations
or no shows will result in withdrawal from future workshops and cancellation of registrations.

Friends Of The Center
For the initial training period of 3 months, Friends of the Center volunteers are asked to volunteer a
minimum of 1 event per month (preferably 2 or more) to become familiar with event usher duties in
assigned areas.
Please Note: Physical requirements may include climbing stairs, assisting patrons in wheelchairs,
the ability to work in all areas of the theatre and good vision in limited lighting. Duties include taking
tickets, showing people to their seats, handing out programs and in the event of an emergency,
assist with evacuating the building. Volunteers must enjoy interacting with the public in a friendly,
professional manner. Shifts and times will vary with weekly programming and training is provided.

While we are a City of Chandler and Chandler Unified School District building, our artistic
and outreach programs are privately supported. The Chandler Center for the Arts receives
no direct appropriations for artistic programming. Our appropriations must be applied only to
the maintenance and operation of the actual building.
Ticket sales and other earned income cover only part of our programming expenses, which
means we must rely on donations in order to deliver quality arts programs at an affordable
cost to the public.
