Ein Mädchen oder Weibchen, from Die Zauberflöte Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791)
A maiden or a little woman Papageno would like to have! O, such a gentle little dove would be a bliss for me! Then food
and drink would better taste, then I’d rank myself with princes, enjoy life as a wise man, and feel as if in Elysium! Can I
not please then any of these charming maidens? I wish one would help me out of my distress, or I will surely pine to
death! If no one will grant me love, then the flames will consume me! But if woman’s lips would kiss me, I would be well
again!
Anthony Smith, Bass-Baritone
Chi il bel sogno di Doretta, from La Rondine
Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924)
Who could guess Doretta’s beautiful dream? How did this mystery end? Alas, one day a student kissed her lips, and that
kiss was revelation: It was passion! Frenzied love! Frenzied rapture! Who could ever describe the subtle caress of a kiss
so ardent? Ah, my dream! Ah, my life! Of what importance is wealth if, at last, happiness has blossomed again! Oh,
golden dream, to be able to love like this!

MUSIC MINISTRY AT THE CATHEDRAL
Welcome to the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart! Through the art of music, the Ministry of Music seeks to
enable each member of the concert audience or worshiping assembly to be drawn into a deeper experience of
the presence of God, in the Church's celebration of the Sacred Liturgy and in an extensive Concert Series.
Through music God continues to reveal God’s self. Music touches and moves hearts and souls, individually
and communally. Music is integral to the life of the Cathedral and is one thread among many in the fabric of
the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart. In keeping with the tradition of cathedrals throughout the ages, the
Cathedral of the Sacred Heart actively promotes and engages in the arts and social outreach for the Catholic
Diocese of Richmond and the Greater Richmond Area. The Music Ministry and its programs seek to respect
the diversity already present in the local community by programming inclusive, eclectic repertoire and by
engaging performing artists from a wide spectrum of musical styles. May our spirits be uplifted to God whose
gift of music we celebrate! Welcome again!
