PROGRAM Meine Seele hört im Sehen George Frideric Handel (1685-1759) My soul hears in seeing when, to glorify the Creator, everything rejoices, everything laughs. Just listen to the splendor of the blooming spring. It is the language of nature that clearly through our eyes speaks to us everywhere. Panis Angelicus César Franck (1822-1890) The angel's bread becomes the bread of men; the heavenly bread ends all symbols. Oh, miraculous thing! The body of the Lord will nourish the poor, poor, and humble servant, the poor, poor, and humble servant. Flute Sonata No. 7 in F Major, Op. 1, No. 11 Larghetto Allegro Siciliana Allegro George Frideric Handel (1685-1759) Lo! Here the Gentle Lark Sir Henry R. Bishop (1786-1855) Lo! Here the gentle lark, weary of rest, from his moist cabinet mounts up on high, Ah! And wakes the morning from whose silver breast the sun ariseth in true majesty. (William Shakespeare) O Divine Redeemer Charles Gounod (1818-1893) Ave Maria J. S. Bach/Charles Gounod (1818-1893) Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen. Meditation, from Thaïs Jules Massenet (1842-1912) Ah! Vous dirai-je Maman – Variations, from Le Toréador Adolphe Adam (1803-1856) Ah! Mother, let me tell you the cause of my torment. Ever since I saw Clitandre looking tenderly at me, my heart keeps saying can one live without a lover? This is a charming song. I will sing it often. Yes, this is a charming song. Its captivating theme gives rise to the most tender feelings! I love the way it moves, gently rocking. It is both expressive and elegant. One’s heart beats just to hear it. Ah, mother, let me tell you, … (Thomas Marie François Sauvage) MUSIC MINISTRY AT THE CATHEDRAL Welcome to the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart! Through the art of music, the Ministry of Music seeks to enable each member of the concert audience or worshiping assembly to be drawn into a deeper experience of the presence of God, in the Church's celebration of the Sacred Liturgy and in an extensive Concert Series. Through music God continues to reveal God’s self. Music touches and moves hearts and souls, individually and communally. Music is integral to the life of the Cathedral and is one thread among many in the fabric of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart. In keeping with the tradition of cathedrals throughout the ages, the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart actively promotes and engages in the arts and social outreach for the Catholic Diocese of Richmond and the Greater Richmond Area. The Music Ministry and its programs seek to respect the diversity already present in the local community by programming inclusive, eclectic repertoire and by engaging performing artists from a wide spectrum of musical styles.
