Science itself is the single greatest force for change. The scientists are themselves part of the deepest revolution in human affairs. Today, in many developing countries, science and technology are increasingly being harnessed to aid governance for societal development. A society bears a unique combination of political, social and economic characteristics which ultimately determine the context of development. Science and technology are now considered as powerful tools to harness the creative forces of society. Introduction of scientific technology like using biometrics for citizen identification, machine-readable passport, use of bio and nano technology in biological sciences, use of satellite images to explain weather conditions, quality health care through telemedicine and diagnosis of diseases, money transfers through wireless etc. has been changing the scenario of the present day society. There is ample scope for the scientists to contribute immensely for the societal development in north east India considering the strength, weakness, opportunities and threats of the region. With these notes the 60th annual technical session of A s s a m Science Society should provide a common platform for exchanging thoughts and ideas for societal development. Assam Science Society 'I II II A s s a m Science Society, the premier Non Government Organization for the N E India, was established in the year 1953 as 'Guwahati Science Society' and subsequently renamed as A s s a m Science Society' in 1956. With the support of 100 branches all over A s s a m the Society has been making humble effort for developing scientific temperament among the peoples of A s s a m and to create a scientific environment by publishing books, booklets, science magazine in A s s a m e s e language, science research journal in English ( J A S S ) , holding technical seminars, symposia, workshops, popular talks etc. The major thrust of A s s a m Science Society is to promote science education and research in this part of the country. The annual technical session organized by the Society is a dedicated expression of that commitment. Assam Agricultural J J M | l L , ^ ^ ^ A s s a m Agriculture College was established on 16th August, 1948 at Borbheta, Jorhat, the present head quarter of A s s a m Agricultural University to which the college was merged on 1st April, 1969. The University comprises of 3 Agriculture Colleges, 2 Veterinary Colleges, 1 each of Home Science College, Fishery College, Sericulture College and Horticulture College. It is the first agricultural university in the entire North East India catering to the needs of research, education and extension education of the state in agriculture and allied sciences. It awards graduate, post graduate and doctoral degrees in different fields. It has now 6 Zonal Research Stations, 5 Commodity Research Stations and 20 Krishi Vigyan Kendras, spread out over the entire state. Jorhat City Jorhat is one of the major cities of A s s a m . It was the last capital of the Ahom Kingdom and home to many historical monuments of A s s a m e s e culture. Jorhat has the highest literacy rate in A s s a m and is known as the 'Knowledge city of A s s a m ' . The city has many academic and research institutes like A s s a m Agricultural University, the world's oldest Tea Experimental Station (Tocklai), North East Institute of Science & Technology, Rain Forest Research Institute, Jorhat Engineering College, Jorhat Medical College, POWIET, J . B. College, Central Muga & Eri Research Institute, A s s a m Women University, D.C.B. Girls' College -the first women's college in upper A s s a m , Jorhat Institute of Science & Technology and Kaziranga University. Jorhat is a rapidly developing city at the moment and one of the major business & commercial hubs in North east-India. Jorhat is well connected by road and rail from all the major cities of A s s a m . Jorhat is also connected by air from Guwahati and Kolkata. Call far Faculties, researchers, trainees and post graduate students from all the research and educational institutes/organizations as well as industries are invited to submit abstract of research papers based on original research work (not exceeding 300 words). The abstract should include a title of the research paper (sentence case and bold letter in 14 font size with middle alignment) followed by the name of the author(s) and address with email (Font - Times New Roman, size-11). The name of the presenting author should be underlined. The abstract should be sent both in hard and soft versions in time. The text should contain a brief introduction, material and methods, results and discussion (without giving sub headings and references). The acceptance of the abstract will be conveyed by e-mail. Author(s) should submit the abstract along with filled in registration form and registration fees before deadline. Abstract submitted after the deadline will not be published in the Abstracts of 60th Technical Session, Assam Science Society.' The authors should indicate the technical session(s) under which (s)he prefers to present the research paper alongwith preference of presentation (Oral/poster). The size of the poster should be maintained strictly as 1mx80 cm, well readable from a distance of at least 2m distance. Authors are requested to follow the format of J A S S , the Research Journal of the A s s a m Science Society for submission of full length paper. The full paper may be submitted on or before January, 20, 2015. The presented papers in the Technical Session & will be published in the peer reviewed Proceedings of the society with ISBN number.
