Assam Science Society 'I II II Assam Agricultural J J M | l L

Science itself is the single greatest force for change.
The scientists are themselves part of the deepest
revolution in human affairs. Today, in many developing
countries, science and technology are increasingly being
harnessed to aid governance for societal development. A
society bears a unique combination of political, social and
economic characteristics which ultimately determine the
context of development. Science and technology are now
considered as powerful tools to harness the creative forces
of society. Introduction of scientific technology like using
biometrics for citizen identification, machine-readable
passport, use of bio and nano technology in biological
sciences, use of satellite images to explain weather
conditions, quality health care through telemedicine and
diagnosis of diseases, money transfers through wireless
etc. has been changing the scenario of the present day
society.
There is ample scope for the scientists to contribute
immensely for the societal development in north east India
considering the strength, weakness, opportunities and
threats of the region. With these notes the 60th annual
technical session of A s s a m Science Society should provide
a common platform for exchanging thoughts and ideas for
societal development.
